Joe Rogan astounded by lack of coverage of Twitter Files: ‘As big a scandal as Watergate’
February 4, 2023
For years Democrats and their media allies have likened nearly every aspect of the ongoing witch hunt against Donald J. Trump to the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard M. Nixon. But none of them compare to the damning revelations contained in the ongoing release of internal documents from Twitter that show the government’s influence on the social media giant to censor and suppress information that didn’t fit the Democratic Party agenda.

During a recent edition of his popular Spotify show, podcaster Joe Rogan explained that the “Twitter Files” which have been published as new owner Elon Musk implements a new policy of transparency at the San Francisco-based company, is really comparable to the scandal that began with the 1972 break-in of the Democratic Party’s national headquarters at the Watergate hotel complex in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent coverup that ended with Nixon’s 1974 resignation only two years after his landslide reelection bid which he won by 520-17 electoral votes.

On Friday’s episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” the host sat down with political commentator Kyle Kulinski for one of his trademark, wide-ranging, extended interviews when the topic of the reporting of the Twitter documents by journalists including Matt Taibbi, Bari Weiss and Michael Shellenberger came up during a discussion of free speech on internet platforms, the media and gatekeepers.

“‘Who’s gonna watch the watchmen’ is the old saying,” Kulinski said of the unaccountability of the American thought police. “So like, you set up this… overlord group that gets to determine everything. But it’s like, what about when they’re wrong? And they’re gonna be wrong from time to time? Cause all — sometimes the conventional wisdom ends up being wrong.”

“Sometimes it ends up being right. But you never, you don’t know. You have to, like you said, it’s gonna be messy. You gotta try to figure it out. And anybody putting their thumb on the scale and trying to change the outcome by, you know, fiat from above. That’s not the way it’s supposed to work,” he said.

“And it’s not just that their conventional wisdom is going to be wrong,” Rogan said. “It’s that they’re being fed propaganda. And they’re disseminating it. Ad hoc with no questioning it whatsoever. No pretense, no worry.”

The conversation turned to mainstream media reporters, whose gullibility, slothfulness and raw political partisanship have cratered public trust in the journalistic profession.

“They have a lot of sources inside the FBI and the CIA. And if the government comes out with their official line, they just write it up like little stenographers. They’re stenographers, they’re not journalists. They’re not reporters. You’re supposed to fact-check them too,” Kulinski said.

“One of the best examples of that is the Twitter files,” Rogan said, stressing the importance of Musk’s transparency. “You see no coverage of this on CNN, no coverage of this astounding collusion between intelligence agencies and a social media network to suppress accurate information that would harm the political party that’s in power.”

“Which is f**king wild. It’s wild that the news isn’t covering this cause like, arguably, that’s as big a scandal as Watergate. It’s as big a scandal as any other times in the past where we’ve found that there’s been some really shady s**t going on that would change the way people would see a narrative,” Rogan added.

Google Leaks Arguably More Important Than Twitter Files

In a posted thread reminiscent of the “Twitter Files,” an independent journalist called for Elon Musk to uncover more schemes concocted by Twitter as he reported on 2019 leaks surrounding Google’s election interference.

The History of 7 Oddly Named Foods

Whether you’re venturing out to a new restaurant or sharing a home-cooked meal with friends, chances are most of the foods you encounter are pretty self-explanatory. Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or chocolate cake — even without much of a description, it’s usually easy to discern what will be gracing your plate. But even some of the culinary delights that have become standard American fare carry unusual monikers that may have you wondering about their mysterious origins. Let the backstory on these seven oddly named foods give your brain a mental palate refresher.

Chinese spy balloon over the US: An aerospace expert explains how the balloons work and what they can see

Officials of the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed on Feb. 2, 2023, that the military was tracking what it called a “spy balloon” that was drifting over the continental United States at an altitude of about 60,000 feet. The following day, Chinese officials acknowledged that the balloon was theirs but denied it was intended for spying or meant to enter U.S. airspace. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the balloon’s incursion led him to cancel his trip to Beijing. He had been scheduled to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Feb. 5 and 6. On February 3, the Pentagon said that a second suspected Chinese balloon was seen over Latin America.

Blue City Liberals Exposed in new Migrant Scheme–
They Are Paying Migrants to do This

Democrats in big, liberal cities don’t care about the border crisis. They said nothing as millions of illegal aliens flooded into America, trampling border towns and communities. Democrats didn’t care that Biden was busing these illegals to states all across the country.

That is, until these aliens were bused into their cities. Republican governors have been sending illegal aliens to big cities like New York. And now, suddenly, Democrats care about the border. New York is full; they refuse to put up more illegals who end up destroying hotels. But are they deporting them? Demanding Biden close the border?

Of course not. They are sending them to Canada!

It has been revealed that many of the illegal migrants receiving government-funded bus tickets to leave New York City are using the free transport to flee to the Canada…

After picking up their New York state taxpayer-funded tickets from soldiers stationed at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street in Manhattan, migrants hop on their respective buses and the journey begins. [The Post Millennial]

This is pretty unbelievable. New York is handing out free bus tickets to illegal aliens. Many of them are sent to Plattsburgh, a border town in Northern New York. And taxis and shuttles are waiting to take them to Canada–where Canadian authorities arrest them and process them.

So, wait a minute. It’s “wrong” to deport these people back to where they came from. But it’s okay to send them across the other border? Talk about hypocrisy!

Democrats are all for welcoming illegal aliens into America… as long as they don’t ruin their cities! Once they become a problem, they just send them along to another country to deal with.

This is pretty typical of Democrats. They always expect someone else to clean up their own messes. What’s so outrageous about this is that they have no problem sending these illegals to another country, as long as its not their home country.

Why the heck aren’t Democrats just deporting these freeloading criminals back to where they came from? Why does Canada have to deal with them? Why aren’t Democrats requiring Biden to secure our border?

Is it “compassionate” to pass along these undesirables–rather than requiring them to return home? I don’t think so. These people blatantly broke our laws by coming over the border. They have no right to be here. Their home countries don’t mind; they have no intentions of actually helping their own.

But America and Canada are supposed to take up the slack? Oh, as long as it doesn’t bother New York or California, right?

Bull.

Part Of The Problem: Non-Binary Teacher Reveals School Plan To Suppress Information From Parents And Promotes Support
Friday, 10 February 2023

A Maryland educator reported that intentionally hiding a student's gender switch was mandated by the district's "explicit" policy, which they found to be amusing, Fox News Digital discovered.

According to the school's website, Lane Cogdill is employed at Silver Spring International Middle School in the Montgomery County Public Schools District. The educator uses "ze/zir," "they/them" and "he/him" pronouns when referring to themself.

The educator declared that their remarks regarding a Fox News Digital piece, which featured Cogdill talking about how they divulged to students their numerous nonbinary identities and also kept their gender transformation hidden, were all in accordance with the school district's policy.

Fox News Digital contacted the school district to determine if the claims that teachers were mandated to divulge gender identity to children during initial meetings and conceal students' transitions were part of official policy but did not get an answer.

The Chinese Spy Balloon Revelations Leave us With Two Scary Scenarios

FEBRUARY 7, 2023

Here we are, left with yet another news cycle that provides us only a drip of revelations similar to the docudramas plaguing the current and past administrations. However, this time the tidbits of valuable information are coming from our Department of Defense regarding alleged past Chinese spy balloon incursions.

Unfortunately, the information we have been getting merely raises more questions than provides any answers. In some ways, it appears that delaying the takedown of the spy balloon was a sound decision, allowing our government to glean valuable intelligence on our near-peer adversary.

But can we believe what our DOD is telling us? And if what they say is true, can we trust that they are competent enough to extract all the possible intelligence they can and do anything of value with it?

Talk About Biffing it
The latest incursion of our airspace by a floating Chinese eye in the sky does not seem to be the first time this has happened. We are just now learning that it happened three times during the Trump administration. The Commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), General Glen VanHerck, owned up to his past failures.

“I will tell you that we did not detect those threats, and that’s a domain awareness gap that we have to figure out,” Gen. VanHerck admitted.

That’s an understatement; what is Gen. VanHerck’s job?

According to the General, “As the NORAD commander, it’s my responsibility to detect threats to North America.”

What a bang-up job you’re doing! Not much accountability at NORAD, it would appear. Perhaps they are spending too much time on their yearly mission to track Santa as he delivers gifts to all the boys and girls. So how were the previous balloons discovered?

“The intel community, after the fact, made us aware of those balloons that were previously approaching North America or transited North America,” said Gen. VanHerck.

Ah, yes, the same intelligence community so well known for being transparent and honest.

Fake News?
Someday I hope to be an ‘unnamed’ source since I feel a bit left out given that there seem to be so many running around the beltway. An unnamed U.S. official claimed that once we realized the unidentified previous sightings were Chinese spy balloons, they chose to keep it a secret to keep China from knowing how we figured it out.

How clever, how is that working for us now? I would argue we look pretty unprepared and ridiculous.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, “I can’t speak to the information flow in the previous administration. I can tell you that we have reached out to key officials from the previous administration and offered them briefings on the forensics that we did. And we expressed our willingness to walk them through what we learned.”

How generous of you; how about walking the American people through it? The former President isn’t buying this narrative, and I don’t think we should be either.

Popping onto Truth Social, former President Trump posted “Now they are putting out that a balloon was put up by China during the Trump Administration, in order to take the ‘heat’ off the slow moving Biden fools.”

He further claimed that all of these rumors of three other balloons are ‘disinformation.’ So is the Biden administration fabricating this entire bogus balloon brouhaha?

Five-Sided Drama
Yesterday, former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, appeared on Fox News and dropped some serious truth bombs. First, Mr. Gingrich highlighted that the timeline of this recent balloon blunder seems a bit off.

“When the military learned about it, apparently there’s a three or four-day period where they don’t tell the president,” said Gingrich.

That seems odd; you’d think that would be something you’d tell the president unless the president has the mental acuity of a five-year-old. Then you might not want to upset him over a balloon.

There have been some whispers that when Uncle Joe was finally notified of the spy balloon, he had told the military to shoot it down but was dismissed, causing Mr. Gingrich to give him the moniker last night of ‘Suggester in Chief’ versus Commander in Chief.

“This is just one more example of a bloated Pentagon bureaucracy that’s more worried about being dealing with social issues than it is about defending the United States,” he said.

Now he’s speaking my language. Gingrich goes on to go through the Pentagon’s recent highlight reel, stating “From Afghanistan on, we have seen failure after failure, and the Pentagon needs a deep, thorough shake up.”

Do I dare say Newt insinuates that our beloved Department of Defense might have some deep rot within it?

Questions That will Remain Unanswered
Let’s take a spell to lay out some of these paradoxes with this balloon buffoonery:

President Biden wasn’t notified right away

the DOD alleges they ‘missed’ 3 prior balloons

no one in the Trump administration was informed of previously missed balloons

China launched this massive balloon that would obviously be seen with the naked eye

China can spy on us in a much more covert manner

So let’s dissect this idea that, as Mr. Trump alleges and some of his former appointees, the previous three balloons narrative is disinformation or, simply, a lie. That would entail that not only is the Biden administration in on this supposed lie but the military and intelligence community.

Now if that’s not enough to make you feel like you live in a simulated democracy, let’s dissect the idea that the three balloons did happen. I think that the below questions are essential and not all-inclusive:

Why are we just now learning about this failure?
Why didn’t the Trump administration know of the failure?
Why did we fail to detect the spy balloons?
What has been done to mitigate this massive failure?

Will we ever get these answers? Doubtful.

My final thought for you – at best, our government is lying about a near peer’s espionage efforts. At worst, our government is incompetent and hiding it from the American people and the individuals we elected into office. So chew on that for a bit and attempt to sleep well tonight.

Who is in charge? I can tell you it’s pretty clear it’s not the President, either past or present, but those military and defense bureaucrats who think they know better and prefer to advance their own agendas than serving and protecting.

‘Biggest bunch of bullsh*t!’ MTG recalls her reaction at Biden officials’ briefing on Chinese spy balloon

February 12, 2023

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) was not happy with the Biden administration’s handling of the Chinese spy balloon that floated for days over the United States before finally being shot down off the coast of South Carolina.

Speaking at a fundraising event in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, on Saturday, Greene described to potential donors her fury during a closed-door briefing on the balloon with Biden officials.

A video of the event was circulated on Twitter by influencer Ron Filipkowski.

“You sat by and allowed this Chinese spy balloon that could’ve contained a bioweapon like Covid,” Greene said she told the officials. “It could’ve contained a nuclear bomb. An EMP attack, or hypersonic missiles — like the Chinese government, the CCP, has shown their own people these weather balloons dropping these hypersonic missiles on video. They showed those on video. This is a common thing.

“I said, ‘You allowed this to go across the country, and then you want to stand up here and give us our excuses — your excuses — on why you didn’t shoot it down. Because you’re gathering intelligence, or you didn’t want to risk anyone’s lives?’” she told attendees. “I said, ‘That is the biggest bunch of bullsh*t!'”

The crowd erupted with applause and whistles.

“I had to wait in line the whole time,” Greene told The Hill of the Thursday classified briefing. “I was I think the second to last person, and I chewed them out just like the American people would’ve.”

“I tore ’em to pieces,” she stated.

But one anonymous lawmaker who attended the briefing described Greene as “irrational.”

“When she got to ask questions, she was yelling out saying ‘bullshit,’ and, you know, ‘I don’t believe you,'” the source said. “Just screaming and yelling, irrational in my estimation.”

Greene argued that, by waiting, Democrats made Biden look weak.

“I said the president may be a Democrat but he’s still the president of the United States and they made him look like a fool and made him look weak the week before the State of the Union — I’ve said that publicly, too — by not shooting it down,” she told The Hill. “And I said there was nothing I heard there today that gave me any confidence in what they did.”

When asked how others in the room reacted to her rant, Greene replied, “They tried to give me some more excuses and I said, ‘I don’t want to hear more of your excuses.'”

“He said, ‘well it’s a matter of opinion,'” she recalled. “I said, ‘no, you’re nothing but excuses and it’s wrong and I’m just telling you, this is how the American people see it and it’s a serious problem.'”

Following the takedown on Friday of another mysterious object over Alaska, MTG praised the military’s quick response, seeing it as proof that the “excuses” surrounding the balloon were “BS.”

“They just shot down an object over Alaskan frozen waters,” she tweeted. “Thank you for defending our country, but this proves all of their excuses about last week’s Chinese Spy Balloon was [sic] BS.

“Just like I told them in the briefing,” she stated. “Defend our Homeland at all cost.”

Chinese media mocks Biden over ‘laughably juvenile’ order to shoot down spy balloons with fighter jets

February 12, 2023

As President Biden orders fighter jets to shoot down a foreign spy balloon and mysterious objects over Alaska and Canada, China is laughing at him.

Chinese Communist Party-owned news outlets are blasting Biden in blistering opinion pieces, calling the U.S. response to the incursions “hysterical” and Biden’s orders to take them down “laughably juvenile.”

Both outlets insist the Chinese balloon was nothing more than a civilian weather craft and both say popping balloons and unknown objects with fighter jets and missiles only served to make the U.S. military look weaker.

In China Daily, China’s largest news outlet, journalist Chen Weihua called the United States “immature and irresponsible.”

“The Joe Biden administration’s handling of the Chinese balloon case last week was meant to showcase the United States’ strategic strength amid fierce attacks by Republicans and the low approval ratings of US officials,” he wrote. “But instead it has shown to the world how immature and irresponsible — indeed hysterical — the US has been in dealing with the case.”

“For at least a week, the whole US has been obsessed with the Chinese civilian balloon, as US politicians and media projected it as a grave threat to US national security,” Weihua wrote. “But they should realize that it does not make sense for China to spy on the US using a balloon the size of three school buses while modern surveillance satellites can do a much better job, and surreptitiously too.”

The CCP mouthpiece then targeted the United States’ own spy crafts.

“Speaking of spying, no country employs surveillance more widely and aggressively than the US, including its frequent military surveillance flights near China’s shores, which even people such as former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger and former US national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski regarded as provocative,” Weihua stated. “How would the US respond if China were to conduct frequent surveillance flights off the coast of California, New York or Florida?”

Were it not for “Republicans, from new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to Senator Marco Rubio” who “hijacked” Biden’s decisions by calling the president’s response “weak,” Weihua argued, things might have played out differently.

“The fierce attacks came just days before Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, at a time when public opinions are not in his favor,” he noted.

Weihua continued:

All these have prompted the Biden administration to overreact to the balloon incident, including dispatching an F-22 fighter jet on Saturday to shoot down the civilian balloon with an AIM 9X Sidewinder missile worth $400,000 as well as “postponing” a trip of Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Beijing.

That has set a very bad precedent for the two countries in terms of handling similar cases in the future. Just remember, China didn’t fire at the real US military spy plane, EP3, when it made an emergency landing in China’s Hainan island on April 1, 2001, without any permission from the Chinese authorities.

“Resorting to force and shooting down a civilian research balloon that veered off course is clearly not a responsible and proper way of handling such a case. As the world’s two largest economies, the US and China should increase communication and mutual understanding so that they can better handle such cases in the future,” the journalist concluded. “The US should have dealt with the balloon case in a calm and responsible way without letting it be hijacked by the bitter domestic partisan politics because a conflict between the two countries would spell disaster for the entire world.”

The op-ed also ran in the People’s Daily, another CCP-owned media source.

On the same day Weihua’s story was published, President Biden shot down a “high altitude” object that has yet to be identified over Alaska.

The Global Times, a hardline Chinese outlet, ran the headline: “Another week, another juvenile farce in the US’ skies.”

“Less than a week after a US fighter jet fired a missile and brought down a Chinese balloon, an utterly harmless civilian airship designed for meteorological use, the US shot down an unidentified object around Alaska on Friday at the order of President Joe Biden,” the Global Times wrote. “Stuck in typical partisanship and ‘political correctness,’ orders from the White House are getting laughably juvenile.”

The over-the-top response, the outlet claims, was Biden’s failed attempt at saving face.

“The shooting down of the object can be argued as Biden’s attempt to reverse the tide of criticisms against his administration for taking down the Chinese balloon too late,” Global Times stated. “This time, Biden wants to showcase that he can make a decisive and timely action, even without knowing almost anything. This is juvenile.”

The outlet mercilessly mocked Biden for sending F-22s to down a balloon, arguing that, “instead of making the US Air Force look mighty, the missions only made the US a laughingstock.”

“The US did make a strong case that the F-22 is invincible, when its enemy are balloons,” the outlet quipped.

“What can Washington prove by intercepting a bunch of balloons? Nothing other than its ignorance and incompetence,” it declared. “Unfortunately, this is the way the US propagandizes – bragging about shooting down balloons.”

It then offered a warning for Ukraine and allies of the United States.

“The US has the opportunity to confront Russia on the battlefield. But it keeps stepping back, confirming it supports Ukraine but will not get involved in a direct confrontation with Russia,” Global Times stated.

“Is US strong or weak?” the outlet asked. “It looks pretty damn tough in the face of balloons, civilian airships, and other innocuous objects. But in the face of real battlefield, US’ choice is to exhaust others. Can’t its allies see it?”

GOP Senators Assert US Firms May Have Helped Make Chinese Spy Balloon

February 12, 2023

Republican senators have revealed that Biden administration officials did not dismiss the possibility that manufacturers in the United States helped to construct the Chinese surveillance balloon that was seen flying over the U.S. in recent weeks.

The officials reportedly didn’t deny the “very disturbing possibility” while discussing the issue in a classified briefing with senators on Thursday.

After the briefing with officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Department of Defense (DOD) and the State Department, Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK) revealed that a question was raised in the meeting about American companies’ involvement in the construction of the Chinese spy balloon — and officials did not answer definitively.

“American companies shouldn’t be helping build spy satellites that are used against their own citizens,” Sullivan told reporters at the Capitol after the briefing.

“Maybe there’s nothing to be said about that, but somebody asked about it, and nobody, nobody in that briefing said, ‘oh, it’s not a problem,’” he added.

Hawley discussed the issue during an interview with Fox News Digital, expressing his concern over the matter.

“Of course I’m concerned about the possibility of that,” he said.

“I don’t think there was any definitive answer on that. But…the question was asked by a senator and, you know, I think that that’s, that’s a very, a very disturbing possibility,” Hawley added.

“Obviously, the other thing that it made was crystal clear from this briefing was how unprepared, totally unprepared the administration and frankly, the Pentagon was for this to happen,” he continued.

Hawley went on to discuss his frustration over the fact that the U.S. had been aware of previous balloons flying over the U.S. in the past, but had “nothing prepared” to deal with future occurrences.

“And listen, they’ve already made it public that we’ve known that there have been previous balloon flights over U.S. territories and, of course, the United States in years past,” he said. “They knew that already, and yet they had nothing prepared to deal with this espionage balloon that came right over the United States. I mean, it’s really it is, it is an incredible, incredible lack of planning. And frankly, I think major, major lapses of judgment.”

Fox News has also confirmed that the Chinese surveillance balloon had western-made parts with English writing on them.

Meanwhile, the State Department spoke about the issue earlier Thursday, stating: “We are confident that the balloon manufacturer has a direct relationship with China’s military and is an approved vendor of the PLA, according to information published in an official procurement portal for the PLA.”

Sullivan also noted that he encourages officials to continue providing briefings on the surveillance balloon — which entered the U.S. through Alaska, traveled through Canada and then entered the country again through northern Idaho. It was finally shot down off the Carolina coast, but not before it traveled over the U.S. and reportedly collected data.

“What we were just briefed on there, I think it should just be made public, right. Let the American people know the extent of the challenges,” the Republican senator said. “You know, when JFK realized we had missiles on the island of Cuba, right? The United States went public, so we should let people know when this has happened previously. Explain it, explain why we didn’t, but I think that’s going to be up to the executive branch.”

Critics have called out the Biden administration over their lack of transparency regarding the surveillance balloon, especially in light of the fact that they had known about it long before the public was made aware.

'Unidentified object' downed over Lake Huron, 3rd this week

Sun, February 12, 2023

WASHINGTON (AP) — An "unidentified object” was shot down with a missile by U.S. fighter jets Sunday over Lake Huron, and it was believed to be the same one tracked over Montana and monitored by the government beginning the night before, U.S. officials said.

The downing comes after earlier objects in Alaska and Canada were shot out of the sky because they were flying at altitudes that posed a threat to commercial aircraft, according to the officials, who had knowledge of the downings and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive operations.

U.S. and Canadian authorities had restricted some airspace over the lake earlier Sunday as planes were scrambled to intercept and try to identify the object.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., tweeted that “the object has been downed by pilots from the U.S. Air Force and National Guard.” The shootdown was confirmed by four U.S. officials.

The news comes as U.S. officials were still trying to precisely identify the other two objects blown from the sky by F-22 fighter jets over the past two days, and were working to determine whether China was responsible as concerns escalate about what Washington says is Beijing's large-scale aerial surveillance program.

The object shot down Saturday over the Yukon was described by U.S. officials as a balloon significantly smaller than the three school bus-size balloon hit by a missile Feb. 4 while drifting off the South Carolina coast after traversing the country. A flying object brought down over the remote northern coast of Alaska on Friday was more cylindrical and described as a type of airship.

Both were believed to have a payload, either attached or suspended from them, according to the officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. Officials were not able to say who launched the objects and were seeking to figure out their origin.

U.S. officials said the two more recent objects were much smaller in size, different in appearance and flew at lower altitudes than the suspected Chinese spy balloon that fell into the Atlantic Ocean after the U.S. missile strike. They said the Alaska and Canada objects were not consistent with the fleet of Chinese aerial surveillance balloons that targeted more than 40 countries, stretching back at least into the Trump administration.

That large white orb first appeared over the U.S. in late January, and since then Americans have been fixated on the sky above them. U.S. authorities made clear that they constantly monitor for unknown radar blips, and it is not unusual to shut down airspace as a precaution to evaluate them, but they'd also take action when necessary.

On Sunday, the U.S. briefly closed the airspace over Lake Michigan but reopened it roughly an hour later.

State Department Funded Foreign Think Tank Working To Censor Americans

February 13, 2023

The State Department funded the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a foreign organization that works to police online platforms.

ISD has partnerships with YouTube and Spotify to inform their content moderation decisions, and claims it helps platforms curb “misinformation.”

:tello: "Oh that would be THE TRUTH?"

“By funding organizations – including foreign organizations, no less – that put their thumbs on the scale of hot-button domestic political debates, the federal government is wading into a dangerous Constitutional minefield,” Michael Chamberlain, director of government watchdog Protect the Public’s Trust, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The U.S. State Department funds and partners with a U.K.-based think tank that collaborates with online platforms to censor perceived mis- and disinformation.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) is a British nongovernmental organization that styles itself as a research group working in partnership with several online platforms to combat extremism, hate and disinformation. However, the organization frequently classifies typical conservative discourse and journalism as hate and/or disinformation and has received funding from the U.S. government.

The State Department awarded the organization a grant in September 2021 to “advance the development of promising and innovative technologies against disinformation and propaganda” in Europe and the U.K. after it won the U.S.-Paris Tech Challenge. The event, which was held in collaboration with the “U.S. Embassy Paris, the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) [and] the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO),” was also won by the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), an organization which reportedly seeks to demonetize conservative news sites.

The State Department confirmed that its Global Engagement Center funded ISD to study Russian disinformation tactics against Wikipedia through a grant to Park Advisors. The department told the Daily Caller News Foundation that it plays no role in content moderation decisions on social media platforms.

“By funding organizations – including foreign organizations, no less – that put their thumbs on the scale of hot-button domestic political debates, the federal government is wading into a dangerous Constitutional minefield,” Michael Chamberlain, director of government watchdog Protect the Public’s Trust, told the DCNF. “The government cannot get around First Amendment restrictions by outsourcing or using surrogates or agents for prohibited activities.”

Additionally, the State Department and ISD partnered to create the Strong Cities Network, a United Nations-affiliated initiative that seeks to combat “hate, polarisation and extremism” abroad; the State Department solicited several grants as part of this arrangement, naming ISD as a sub-awardee. (RELATED: A Dem-Linked Dark Money Network Is Quietly Funding The ‘Misinformation’ Research Industry)

The organization also lists as funders left-wing billionaire Pierre Omidyar’s Omidyar Group, George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, along with several European government agencies.

ISD maintains several partnerships with platforms to inform their content moderation decisions, largely regarding extremist and terrorism-related content, but also, significantly, what it deems hate and misinformation.

The organization has a special advisory role with Spotify to “curb” misinformation on the audio streaming platform, and is tasked with flagging content for YouTube.

“The State Department’s partnership with the ISD is problematic at best and unconstitutional at worst,” Mike Davis, president of the Internet Accountability Project, told the DCNF. “Taxpayer dollars essentially funding the censorship of conservatives under the guise of ‘misinformation’ shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s followed the Biden administration’s assault on the marketplace of ideas.”

While much of ISD’s work focuses on various forms of extremism such as radical Islam and white supremacy, a significant portion involves “disinformation” and online hate. However, the organization frequently characterizes staples of conservative discourse as hateful and/or as disinformation.

For instance, ISD appears to consider the comparison of abortion to murder as misinformation, admonishing social media platforms for not enforcing their abortion misinformation policies against such claims.

Moreover, in a 2022 report on “climate disinformation,” ISD profiled a form of discourse it labeled “delayism,” which accepts as a premise the existence of climate change but does not, in ISD’s view, advocate strong enough or urgent enough policy solutions. Criticism of particular policies designed to address climate change, such as the promotion of electric vehicles, were also included within the “disinformation” report.

“In contemporary discussions on what actions should be taken, by whom and how fast, proponents of climate delay would argue for minimal action or action taken by others. They focus attention on the negative social effects of climate policies and raise doubt that mitigation is possible,” the report read.

ISD cited as an example a Facebook post from Republican Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw that warned of the “radical obsession with wind and solar as the only clean energy solution” and argued instead for nuclear energy and natural gas with carbon capture technology.

Another example was a meme that compared an electric vehicle to a Flintstones-esque rock car.

“This outlandish form of censorship cannot be allowed to happen in America, such as simple policy preferences related to electric cars being labeled as misinformation,” Davis told the DCNF.

The organization characterized Libs of Tik Tok, a conservative Twitter account that publicizes examples of left-wing pedagogy including Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender ideology, as a “prolific spreader of hate,” and classified conservative journalist Scott Morefield as an individual “known to spread disinformation and amplify hateful right-wing talking points.”

ISD also considered “misgendering” an example of “anti-trans hatred” in a report on social media discourse surrounding the participation of men in women’s sports. ISD concluded by urging platforms to take action against posts that misgender trans individuals.

While ISD’s work is primarily research-oriented, the organization has successfully embedded itself in roles informing content moderation decisions within hugely influential social media and technology companies. Much of ISD’s work with online platforms focuses on terrorism and violent extremism, but the organization’s purview also includes mis- and disinformation.

ISD is a member of Spotify’s Safety Advisory Council, formed in 2022 as a response to criticism of the audio streaming platform for Joe Rogan’s December 2021 interview with COVID-19 vaccine skeptic Dr. Robert Malone.

The council, though not tasked with directly making content moderation decisions, is nevertheless empowered to “inform” Spotify’s policies and enforcement actions regarding “misinformation.” In ISD’s own words, the group will help Spotify “curb the spread of misinformation” on its platform and “independently keep watch over the platform’s content and safety policies.”

Additionally, ISD is part of YouTube’s “Trusted Flagger program,” an initiative in collaboration with several nongovernmental organizations and government agencies designed to improve YouTube’s enforcement of its guidelines. Trusted Flaggers are able to flag more content than average users, The Wall Street Journal reported in 2014, and receive special treatment from YouTube.

ur teams prioritize flags from Trusted Flaggers for review,” Google’s description of the program reads.

ISD partnered with Google.org for its Impact Challenge on Safety grant initiative which distributed €10 million to organizations working to “counter hate and extremism” in Europe, and also received a $1.3 million grant from Google in 2017 to counter hate in the U.K.

The organization also boasts partnerships with Microsoft, Amazon’s audiobook platform Audible and Facebook.

“The State Department exists to represent the American public’s interests abroad,” Chamberlain told the DCNF. “If they are interested in countering concerns about weaponizing the government, they could start by not assisting outside groups that target the speech of American citizens.”

ISD did not respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.
