BRIGHAM CITY, Utah -- The man accused of killing Dylan Rounds limped into a Utah courtroom Monday afternoon wearing an orange jumpsuit, handcuffs around his wrists and shackles on his ankles.

James Brenner spoke only one word during the nine-minute hearing in the Box Elder County Courthouse. First District Judge Brandon Maynard asked Brenner if he was okay with the timeline of future hearings and Brenner responded, "Yes."

The 59-year-old is charged with aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a human body along with some firearms charges.

Brenner was squatting on property near Rounds’ trailer when the 19-year-old disappeared from his farm in the remote down of Lucin, Utah over Memorial Day weekend in 2022. His body has not been found but Rounds' boots were found near a dirt mound and his phone was discovered at the bottom of a pond near Brenner’s trailer.

Brenner has a violent criminal history and was arrested in June 2022 on outstanding warrants. He was booked into the Weber County Jail in Ogden, Utah on federal charges.

During Monday’s hearing, Michael Studebaker, Brenner’s attorney, asked Judge Maynard to appoint co-counsel to assist in the defense.

Maynard said he would look into the issue of having an additional defense attorney appointed and explained the challenges the court has to deal with as Brenner is facing both state and federal charges.

"Here's the problem that is presented in this case. Mr. Brenner is in federal custody and each time this court acts, it has to get permission from the federal government to bring Mr. Brenner in," Maynard said.

Box Elder County Attorney Blair Wardle said the process takes six weeks so Brenner's next court appearance, where a decision will be made on whether to hold a preliminary hearing, won't be held until July 31.

Candice Cooley and Justin Rounds, Rounds' parents, were in the courtroom with some extended family members and explained how they felt seeing Brenner walk into the hearing.

"He's despiacble. His whole act of limping around is a complete act. It's not real," Cooley told EastIdahoNews.com. "I don't know if it is so we think he's going to die or make him some sort of deal but he wants people to feel sorry for him."

Rounds added, "He looks for attention to have people feel sorry for him. That's all. I think it's an act."

A recently developed on going story: JT won't drop my name in either good or bad terms.

Months ago on one of his lives, he stated that "Ron Tello is shallow" and "can't hold it together for more than 30 seconds".

Soon after, I'm all over on Bob shows. I did a full show with him, next day JT comments about that show but fails to drop the T word.

Then recently with you, I professed my dismay of Humanity failing to evolve.

All the while, public comments in my favor rise.

Last night on JT, X was pushing the idea of unity, get on topic, get to work, bring back the fun and scrap the bickering and hate.

Commenters doing the same.

Personally, I want to think I am the catalyst of the "Awakening", and JT has backed off of me because A) He feels bad (embarrassed?) for ripping on me, being wrong, or 2) public pressure.

Or The Dark "GOT" to him as well.

What will a narcissist do when it becomes hard to control you?

If you become someone that they can't control, they quickly move into their narcissistic punishment tactics. There are many narcissistic punishment tactics used by the narcissist when they can't control you, but I will discuss only a few today.

First, when the narcissist can't control you, they are left confused. The tactics they have used previously to control are now not working, and they didn't plan for this possibility. The narcissist believes that they are superior and everyone is looking up to them, so to go counter to their belief is a shock to them, no matter how many times it happens. Remember, narcissists lack object constancy, so they can't consider the past, present, and future at the same time. All they see is how you are negatively impacting their life in this moment, and they don't like that.

The primary options they will choose from to get back at you for not being controlled are the silent treatment or narcissistic rage. The narcissist will use a silent treatment in hopes that you think about the choice that you made. The narcissist knows that you are a caring individual who wants things to go well, and when you know that they are upset, your goal is to help make things better.

The longer the silent treatment goes on, the more likely you are to change your behavior to relieve the tension between you and the narcissist. You may apologize, admit your assumed role in what happened, or otherwise address the situation in a way which removes all responsibility from the narcissist. This is exactly what they want, and when you do any of those things, you are putting the control back in the hands of the narcissist.

Sometimes, the narcissist will choose rage to regain control. They will yell, scream, belittle, and name call, all in hopes that you will back down and do as they want. No one wants to be yelled at, so you are more likely to take responsibility for what happened to again minimize the tension in the interaction.

The narcissist uses these extreme behaviors because it leaves you few options for how to address the issue. They shut down all communication to regain control in their life. The narcissist is incapable of managing their own emotions and will protect against any chance of being vulnerable and exposing themselves to narcissistic injury.

When they can't control you, they lose a sense of control in their highly controlled life, and will do anything to regain control. You become the target for their narcissistic punishment tactics, and they will beat you down until their narcissistic supply is sufficiently filled again.
