Smee. what timber did you use to make your Ging? What was it's draw weight & what was the grain weight of the rock you fired with it?

Gings are great. I made heaps of them when I was a kid. We called them gonks  & made them out of forked tree branches.

yes Birdie we mainly made them out of branch forks too with jelly rubber and a leather pouch ... I found marbles or ball bearings made great ammo ... gravel also wasnt bad

It's actually an honour (of sorts) to end up in this Blatant Hijacking thread! There are soft cushions, dim lights, restorative drinks and a team of friendly doctors and nurses.

I wouldn't mention playing doctors and nurses to Yib and Tello Countess.  You'll give them ideas.

Hey Ubby,

I thought that some years ago I read that the wood from the Yew tree was the traditional british material for a longbow... This was because the sap run wood on the outside of the tree was good for "stretch and recover"... and the bulk inner wood of the tree is good for "compression and recover"... Thus the outside of the bow could bend convexly and the inside could bend concavely, and both would provide power..

Is that right ???

Cheers
If you try to fail, and succeed, what have you done ??

Barny. Yep your right. In fact, in the old days when the English were fighting the French on French soil, the English would lop down the French Yew trees as they regarded it as better Yew for bows than their own English Yew.

Memories---Green (unripe) Blood plums make great ammo..   They can do amazing damage to glass houses if the slingshot is powerfull enough to fire the plums a reasonable distance  :evillaugh: :sing:

(Excuse this brief Thread hijack interlude Ginar)

Tello, The term 'Desert Rat', has more meaning in Australia and UK than you know....

Remember the Movie 'Desert Rats' ?.....well.....if not you can read about it here....: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Desert_Rats_%28film%29

The film is based on the Australian 9th Division, who were charged with the defence of Tobruk under the command of General Leslie Morshead. Hoping to survive against overwhelming odds for two months, the garrison held off the best of Rommel's Afrika Korps for over eight months. The real General Morshead was a distinguished Australian citizen-soldier, but is depicted in the film as the eponymous British "General" played by English actor Robert Douglas.

Misleading title

The title of the film is quite misleading. The 'Desert Rats' were actually the British 7th Armoured Division

The Australian 9th Division besieged at Tobruk were denigrated as being "caught like rats in a trap" by German propaganda, the Australians calling themselves the 'Rats of Tobruk' with pride as a result.

Spooky eh....!!...Aussies are pretty stubborn when it comes to a scrap..lol
