Tello, I love the smell of gunpowder but, I can fire the same arrows over and over again, works out a lot cheaper, and quieter. The dopey targets don't even know what hit them & I can get six shots off before they even wake up to the fact.

I like the concept of archery, and once I work out how to use a nice compound bow, there'll be no holding me back...
In the meantime, I'll enjoy vicariously the victories of Ubbrd.
Ubbrd, it's interesting - sometimes one looks for something and is convinced it's the best (or a good) deal, but if things don't work out, one realises it's not such a good deal in comparison with another deal. Sometimes the universe condescends to stop and give us a lift.

"R numbers, I can't get arrows for that price. The shafts I buy to make my target arrows cost a bit over $50 each, that's for the bare shaft. I have to buy the points, vanes (plastic tiny feathers) & the nocks (bit that sticks on the bow string) on top of that. I have to cut the shafts to the length I want.
I hate making new target arrows, it's boring, but, it's something I have to do."

Yep R numbers I believe you. It takes a while to make a dozen perfectly weighted arrows. My arrows when complete each weigh exactly 342 grain.
I never got into re loading when I was a shooter, I wish I did but I was too lazy.

Countess. Although my archery is generally tournament stuff (sighted compound bow). I get involved with traditional longbows & I make my own wooden arrows with proper feather fletches.
Australia has some of the best bowmakers (bowyers) in the world & the the wooden longbows they make are works of art that actually fire arrows.
There is a revival in longbow tournament archery in Australia & just about all tournaments have longbow divisions. I own 3 longbows.

Ubbrd..... Rifle reloading is not altogether different from creating your own arrows. It's about personal design to suit your particular preference. The recipe that I gave you earlier is for plinking.... the costs are much higher (around ten times in fact) where the need is target accuracy. Your precision = 342grains!!! Absolutely remarkable!!!

G'day Katbalou. the most popular timber used for wooden arrows is Port Orford Cedar. Austrian Fir is popular in Europe but we don't see it here, as far as I know.
Any flexible very straight grained timber will work but, they should all be spined the same (amount of bend in the arrow when a weight is suspended from it whilst the arrow shaft is balanced at two points 28" apart. the spine should vary depending on the draw weight of the bow. The heavier the draw weight of the bow the stiffer the arrow shaft should be. A bow which takes 50 lb of effort when drawn 28' requires a stiffer arrow shaft than a bow that is 30lb at 28".

Katbalou. I didn't answer your question (didn't read it properly). Just about any straight tight grained flexible timber can be used. most modern long bows have the wooden limbs covered with fibreglass. some longbows have bamboo limbs but most longbows are made with timbers that have been laminated.
There are different types of long bows, English Long bows & American Long bows are the two most popular.
Below is a picture of me with an American Longbow which was made for me by an Australian Bowyer. It will give you an idea of what they look like.
Google Longbow there is a gazillion sites about them. Note the can of Pepsi Max, my staple drink.

Gings are great. I made heaps of them when I was a kid. We called them gonks & made them out of forked tree branches.

yes Birdie we mainly made them out of branch forks too with jelly rubber and a leather pouch ... I found marbles or ball bearings made great ammo ... gravel also wasnt bad

Hey Ubby,
I thought that some years ago I read that the wood from the Yew tree was the traditional british material for a longbow... This was because the sap run wood on the outside of the tree was good for "stretch and recover"... and the bulk inner wood of the tree is good for "compression and recover"... Thus the outside of the bow could bend convexly and the inside could bend concavely, and both would provide power..
Is that right ???

Tello, The term 'Desert Rat', has more meaning in Australia and UK than you know....

The film is based on the Australian 9th Division, who were charged with the defence of Tobruk under the command of General Leslie Morshead. The real General Morshead was a distinguished Australian citizen-soldier, but is depicted in the film as the eponymous British "General" played by English actor Robert Douglas.
Misleading title
The title of the film is quite misleading. The 'Desert Rats' were actually the British 7th Armoured Division
The Australian 9th Division besieged at Tobruk were denigrated as being "caught like rats in a trap" by German propaganda, the Australians calling themselves the 'Rats of Tobruk' with pride as a result.

This BS Circus mentality has destroyed what once had the greatest of potential. Did you know that the word "nincompoop" probably has a biblical origin? Strictly speaking, it means "a foolish or stupid person".
Many writers have tried hard to find an origin for it, though most dictionaries play safe and list it as “origin unknown”. Though dingbat as an insult didn't appear until 1911, the word dingbat first appeared in the 19th century. It was, at first, a plastic term, able to be used in several different contexts. In fact, an 1895 entry in Dialect Notes suggested seven current definitions for dingbat, such as
(1) Balls of dung on buttocks of sheep or cattle;
(2) A flying missile;
(3) An affectionate embrace of mothers hugging and kissing their children; or

French fries are commonly eaten with ketchup in the U.S., but with malt vinegar (delicious) in the U.K., and with mayonnaise (appalling) in the Netherlands. The French mostly take them straight, but the Belgians have the best idea (as is so often the case with food): they eat frites with buckets full of mussels.

Loose gathering of astronomical bodies - stars and solar systems and other phenomena - and vast swathes of interstellar dust and gas, held by gravity in such a way that even if the bond is tenuous, the astronomical collection is clearly defined within the larger context of the universe.
If you were looking at the universe - the great width and depth and height and colour and taste of it, the sum of the visible or material, the entire expanse bound within what we know as time and space - if you were looking at it spread out before you, you would see distinct blotches or gatherings, separate from the vast darkness and visual emptiness and mind-boggling distance that makes up intergalactical space. Those blotches are like islands, scattered here and there, and the space between them is like a great ocean. You would see the shapes and elongations and concentration of matter with a more-or-less distinct outline, forming each separate galaxy.
If you were then to draw closer to one of those galaxies, the better to make out the details, you would gradually see that the distinct outline and concentration of matter is not a solid thing, but rather what looks like a universe in its own right. The shape might be one of several possibilities; let's say that we are looking at a spiral galaxy. Come closer, and what is revealed is a vastness of comparatively empty space within that galaxy, punctuated by splashes of light. At first they are but pinpricks, and many of these are fuzzy and without detail. Come closer again, and some of those pinpricks become clearer. They are not all alike; they are not all the same. They are the glories of the night sky, some achingly distant from your viewpoint, and some nearer so that you can make out some structure. It is rich and detailed and fantastical, and some areas are brighter by far than others. Some areas are less dense, while some are as spectacularly vibrant as a peacock's tail.
Were you to draw closer still, you would make out systems within this galaxy. Extraordinary history is painted upon the darkness, and the stuff of the universe is laid out for you to admire. Suns alight with the heart of power, satellites circling other bodies and possibly mirroring the glory of the sun, comets with great swathing tails of flame, cold planets and asteroids and belts of jagged studs, matter of strange properties, areas of immense pull and a deadly compression down to less than the head of a pin, frozen wastes and burning rocks... and there are systems ruled by a great light, each separate planet lain in its course and moving in accordance with laws of motion that we can only deduce by observation and mathematics.
Finally you may find a modest system orbiting a sun that burns with just sufficient energy for its attendants; planets varying in size and in their distance from the sun move against the moving sun, in a complicated dance choreographed by gravity. These planets speak of the substance of the universe in different costumes and in different materials forming their composition. An icy acidic storm of tremendous ferocity... an eternal and burning desert... gases tumbling within the confines of a great boundary... rare minerals, children born of the wild elements...
And within each object in this macro universe of ours, the visible world, there are orbits of elements and beyond that are yet stranger realms. We are not at the absolute heart of our universe yet, and there is still so much to learn. Reality is like a box within a box within a box within a box within ... etc.
