Late Night musings on this topic: One thing is certain. I won this round. Flockin Water Guys show up <next day> after those emails, and they got attitude on me; No, all past deals are off; yes we are mad at you; yes you are gonna PAY for everything from here on out.

See: Elko County HATES Montello; they want us to die. They hate having to do their flocking job here. And me and my BiG mouth emails did them in. I do think that CC to the editor of the Elko Daily Free Press may have been a bit much...but then see how much pressure these boneheads were under!

They thot they had my balls in a vice & look what happened? The RailRoad got involved & took over and those Waterflocks were here all day and coming back again cuz this 100 year-old ancient sewer system is flocked, was supposed to be replaced 20 years ago on a Federal Grant; they cut corners, cheated, pocketed the money...and now the Roosters have come around to Howl!!!!

Both left and right agree life should be guarded, the issue is who has the right to decide: society or the mother in consultation with her doctor, her faith and her conscious. As someone who has lived under both rules, I support the Mother's right to choose.

That said .... I'm not sure where life starts .... at conception ... or at the ability to live outside the womb ... I guess the science has it at the first tri-mester .... but I'm kind of leaning towards no abortion, unless it does threaten... a woman's life. I'd like to clarify my last statement. I'm not actually anti-life (I actually enjoy life quite a bit). Rather, I'm pro-death. Whether it's capital punishment, abortion, lax gun laws, lack of motorcycle helmets, whatever... life's not that s...acred (please check earlier reference to Japan). Life can be created almost as easily as it can be wiped out (just a little more grunting and sweating). And the supposition that our ability to breed is somehow different then the other animals on the planet... well, that's just silly. We might be smarter (well... not all of us), but we're not special. But it does makes me wonder: my assistant had a miscarriage last week. A sad event to be sure, but does that mean god is pro abortion, or just pro death?

Mike, a government has a right to determine how to punish criminals in a society of justice. The Old Testament approves of capital punishment, and so morally I don't see any connection between being anti-death penalty and being a Christian..., though there are nuances and I am personally opposed to it for other reasons. The fact that you continue to make no distinction between killing a being who has committed a crime, and has gone through a system of justice to determine the punishment he deserves, and a completely helpless, powerless, voiceless child is unbelievably naïve and morally reprehensible.

Tello, on a serious note.... and I'm not having a go at you or any American for that matter -

But, why is there such an uproar over universal healthcare there? We have it here, and yes, there are some probs with it, and it does cost a lot of dollars to run - but everyone has access to health care. I've read a bit about the system there and how people often can't get healthcare. Isn't that sort of putting a price on life? Perhaps there are very valid reasons for people NOT to support it there? I just don't understand the problems associated perhaps.

This was March 15th. I refuse to drive by a gas station today. I suppose I (we in Maui) should be grateful that we haven't the traffic to sit in like Honolulu or worse - California. Bad enough spending this kind of money for gas. If I had to sit in that south Orange County traffic anymore I'd be sick.

Janice Francis I worked in Orange County for a homebbuilder from the early -90'sthrough the mid-2000's. So many people bought homes in Norco for example so they could get more bang for their buck. $500K for a brand new 5,000sq ft house on 1/2 acre horse property....but the traffic, the distance, and as such the cost of gas is so very sad.

Located in Los Angeles, California, the Sepulveda Dam is a project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, built in 1941 to withhold winter flood waters along the Los Angeles River. Background

Sepulveda Dam is a single purpose flood control project constructed and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District. Construction of the project was completed December 30, 1941. The project is located on the Los Angeles River in the City of Los Angeles at the junction of the San Diego (405) and Ventura (101) Freeways. Authorization for the project construction is contained in the Emergency Relief Appropriations Acts of 9 April 1935 and 8 April 1936, the Flood Control Act of 22 June 1936 (PL 74-738) as ammended by the Acts of 15 May 1937 and 28 June 1938 (PL 75-761), plus the Flood Control Act of 18 August 1941 (PL 77-228).

Sepulveda Dam is the western-most of the Corps of Engineers projects in the Los Angeles County Drainage Area (LACDA) flood control system. The purpose of the project is to collect flood runoff from the uncontrolled drainage areas upstream, store it temporarily, and release it to the Los Angeles River at a rate that does not exceed the downstream channel capacity. The project has eight outlet passages, of which, only four have gates. Because the other four passages have no gates, Sepulveda Dam cannot "shut off" flow to the Los Angeles River.

The "stand-by" position of the gated passages is wide open. During the initial stages of a flood event, Sepulveda Dam will release as much of the inflow as is physically possible. This minimizes the amount of stored water and the impact to facilities located within the basin. However, as the Los Angeles River channel downstream approaches its capacity, the Corps of Engineers begins to close the gates in the gated outlet passages. This results in more water stored in the reservoir, but prevents the escape of water from the Los Angeles River downstream.

Sepulveda Dam has automatic spillway gates. The gates are normally in a down position which leaves the spillway crest at elevation 700 feet (213.36 meters) NGVD. When the water surface in the reservoir reaches elevation 692.5 feet (211.07 meters) NGVD, the spillway gates begin to rise, eventually reaching an elevation of 710 feet (216.41 meters) NGVD. The gates reach this height when the water surface in the reservoir reaches elevation 699 feet (213.06 meters) NGVD. If the water level in the reservoir continues to rise, the gates will remain at their maximum height until the water surface in the reservoir reaches elevation 712 feet (217.02 meters) NGVD. At this point the gates will begin to lower, thus increasing the discharge capacity of the spillway. If the water surface in the reservoir reaches elevation 715 feet (217.93 meters) NGVD or above, the gates will be fully lowered to their down position at elevation 700 feet (213.36 meters) NGVD.

The capacity of the Los Angeles River downstream from Sepulveda Dam is approximately 17,000 cfs (481 cms).

The current water control manual for Sepulveda Dam was approved in May 1989.

St. Francis Dam

The St. Francis Dam was a concrete gravity-arch dam, designed to create a reservoir as a storage point of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. It was located 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Los Angeles, California, near the present city of Santa Clarita.

The dam was built between 1924 and 1926 under the supervision of William Mulholland, chief engineer and general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, then called the Bureau of Water Works and Supply. Three minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928, the dam failed catastrophically, and the resulting flood killed more than 450 people. The collapse of the St. Francis Dam is one of the worst American civil engineering failures of the 20th century and remains the second-greatest loss of life in California's history, after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and fire. The disaster marked the end of Mulholland's career. (Figuratively, he was "Washed out". See: William Mulholland.)

Jump the Squark

If you're not a fan of bad horror movies, Sharktopus is likely the stupidest thing you've ever seen. To wit, it's a half-shark, half-octopus genetically engineered killer who spends the entire movie eating hot chicks in bikinis. It doesn't get much dumber than this.

But if you ARE a fan of bad horror movies, Sharktopus is a sort of horror movie nirvana, combining every monster shark movie since Jaws and every giant squid movie since...well there really haven't been any giant squid movies that match the appeal of Jaws. If there was, Sharktopus would rip that off too.

Sharktopus is an apex moment in Syfy's history, when fans of the monster movies the channel is known for suddenly became rabid advocates, eagerly awaiting the next monster's debut. Sharktopus has caused quite a buzz amongst this community, who eagerly discusses every sneak preview of Sharktopus in action: Sharktopus eating a bungie-jumper, Sharktopus eating a yoga instructor, Sharktopus eating a jet skier. All in a day's work for a half-shark, half-opus carnivorous beast genetically engineered to eat drug smugglers.

Oh, right, the plot. Basically, a defense contractor known as Blue Water created a monster known as S-11 (not Sharktopus, of COURSE). When a boat's propeller accidentally slices off the thing's control collar, Sharktopus is free to snatch people from the beach from incredibly shallow water. Or, failing that, it just uses its tentacles to climb right up onto the surface and follow its prey there.

And its prey is mostly hot chicks. The amount of T&A in Sharktopus may astonish even horror movie fans; while any movie featuring beaches inevitably features women in bikinis as well, the camera follows them everywhere with a point of view I like to call the ButtCam (tm). Yes, Sharktopus has a ButtCam.

There are a dizzying number of inconsistencies in Sharktopus, but you've got to question why you would challenge the movie's logic when you're watching a film titled Sharktopus. If you wanted to see a realistic movie that made sense, maybe you shouldn't watch something named after a Spongebob Squarepants episode.

Actually, Sharktopus wasn't even first. Dungeons & Dragons debuted the Squark in the Monstrous Compendium Annual, Volume 4. If only they ignored the fact that nobody cares if the beast's name is technically accurate (it's clearly half-squid, no matter how much the actors repeat that "its behavior is unusual for an octopus"), things might have gone differently for the Squark. When you name your monster Squark, it gets slammed on Stupid Monster lists. When you name your monster Sharktopus, the Internet is abuzz in anticipation.

And that's the difference between awful and awesome.
