“eBay UK sales 5x higher than eBay.com”

Well, if we can believe this statement, we can also believe that there are fairies at the bottom of the garden too. Even a child would know that such a statement is logically absurd. If ever there was an manipulator of statistics, it is this eBafia organisation. Still, the December quarter’s financials due out mid January will dispel such nonsense. And I make this comment here because Mr Dawson blocks my critical comments from appearing on his eBay-supporting blog.
“Today we’re dealing with phase two or phase three [he can’t even remember which one] of disruptive innovation. We’ve had the disruption, now we must disrupt our own disruption.”—John Donahoe (2007).

“eBay UK sales 5x higher than eBay.com” Well, if we can believe this statement, we can also believe that there are fairies at the bottom of the garden too

Philip the article is about how UK with 1/5Th the population of USA is expecting to turn over the same Christmas dollars . Thus the UK population is "5 times" more likely to use ebay to buy on than USA buyers are.

We will all have different opinions as to why that is. My personal view is many UK buyers see ebay as relatively safe a view not obviously held in America. I also feel that Australia has more the USA attitude. And a lot of that is like USA a large country physically hard to get pickups or checking bona fides of seller. UK is also under one legal system. USA like Australia is broken into many states and legal systems and big distances.

If we did not like using ebay we would not talk about ebay. The problem for most of us Chris I suspect included, is we can all see the potential for ebay style trades. That is currently not happening because ebay is the only large player and is greedy for fees today. Not trying to play the long game.

Local woman’s eBay, Paypal disaster

http://blastmagazine.com/the-magazine/technology/tech-news/computers/2009/12/local-womans-ebay-paypal-disaster/

Another reason why you should never buy pre - order stuff on eBay and I reckon eBay should ban sales of this nature , as a seller if you havent got it in stock then you shouldnt be able to list it IMO ..... or perhaps the rules could change for pre - sale stuff and call it pre - order , where you order it but dont pay until the seller advises they have in stock ready to dispatch then you pay same as any other ebay sale so that you havent already used your claim time up prior to item being dispatched.... the only other option is to open a dispute within the required time for every single pre-order purchase you make and then only close claim once received in good order ... but I would avoid these purchases at all costs the risks involved are far too great

Amazon.com is great about "Pre-Orders"
Never a hassle.
And eBay is trying to be like Amazon? Pffft!

Here's an Amazon example (something I really want):

"The campaign encourages all buyers to reconsider and recommit to eBay, because of the amazing value and selection available on the site".

Long-time members are STILL banished from the eBay Forums.

I agree, Smee, on the subject of pre-orders. I've spoken about this before; if eBay/PayPal allow pre-orders, but indemnify themselves against having to protect the buyer if the seller doesn't supply (by their own rules), it's tantamount to allowing fraud.

Great article bnwt! ^^

Did you win? If you put in an amount you would be comfortable paying for it, you did. At the very least, you did not:

    * Signal your intention to every jingjang from here to your momma who might be interested in the item.
    * Bid up the item to what you wanted to pay for it days before the auction is over.
    * In the final frenzy talk yourself into spending more for it than you were willing to pay.

Follow these rules and you’ll be happy and end up with most of the items you bid on. But be warned, the next time you see two hoopleheads bidding up an item six dollars at a time twelve days before the auction is over, you’ll want to poke your eyes out with a stick.

All those "nibble" bidders (even the multiple nibble bidders) are more likely to be the seller's shill bidders than they are likely to be even naive legitimate bidders.

I doubt that Philip, most people I know bid on eBay items as soon as they see them. They do not use a sniping service and do not have the time or experience to try and bid at the last minute.

eBay and Amazon can't pay your bills

“Merely being listed on eBay or Amazon isn't a sustainable business," said Ceru. "There are a lot of people going down this path that are making little or no money.”
