The scam, which ran for about three months, started with buying phone credit, and ended with the youths buying iPods, bike parts and XBox games from eBay.

OK, so correct me if I'm wrong....but three under age kids used School computers to open Ebay Accounts obviously, and stolen Credit cards to open Paypal Accounts?....and then went on a shopping spree.  two things become obvious in this scenario.......

Ebay's and Paypal's verification system is a bloody joke, and no wonder Austrac is ordering them to tighten verification......

And, that the banks were obviously the ones who spotted the fraud, given that they are the only ones who monitor strange payments on CC's...Paypal and Ebay are asleep at the wheel....I'll bet they used Paypal accounts how else can they buy on ebay unless the trader takes CC?....

Ebay's and Paypal's verification system is a bloody joke

Hi Cupie,

Without reading the news, I don't know what exactly is happening.

My reply is based on my understanding and personal experience on paypal's verification system. I hope you don't see me as always opposing your opinion.

Few things I don't understand here:

1. A bit of history here. We (Malaysian) started have access to Paypal in late 2003. I was working in Indonesia then. Registered an account and added my credit card, and make few purchases (paypal limit is USD 100) Not long after that, paypal send me an email telling me they have limit the access to my credit card, and asked that I prove that I am the holder by fax them a copy of any bills addressed to the name and address as in the credit card. They don't accept email copy. So I can't access to my paypal until my return to Malaysia.

2. Each credit card has a sending limit of USD 100. To lift the limit, account holder has  to allow paypal to charge $1.95 USD Expanded Use Fee to their credit card. Then in the credit card statement, there will be a 4-digit Expanded Number next to the $1.95 USD PayPal Expanded Use Fee (example, PayPal 1234*(EXPUSE)). The limit is lifted when the account holder enter the 4 digit number and the USD $1.95 will be refunded.

Now this is interesting.

1. I have to steal the credit card and know the card holder's billing address.
2. I have to have access to the next credit card statement after I added the card.
3. I have to do this before the card holder notice the card was stolen, and cancel the card.

But if I have all the information, I can do anything and not necessary limit to paypal.

This is my understanding and I could be wrong.

Regards,
Low

Users Concerned over eBay Changes to Chat Boards

by: dumpebaynow       Sun Feb 15 19:41:25 2009

Ebay is trying to phase out the boards and eventually shut them down. The "community" thing is old ebay. The new ebay does not benefit from or want to encourage sellers networking with each other, especially when there are so many complaints and evidence of cover-ups, monkeying with the stats, etc.  Over the last year, since ebay announced their anti-seller changes, the boards have been used to spread the word about them and also about the other sites and selling venues, and many have moved their businesses off ebay after getting advice on the boards. Ebay's software looks for specific names of other sites to remove a post, but has not been able to pick up the codes we use. Sellers being able to communicate with each other is not something ebay wants anymore. It is no longer to their advantage. The boards are deliberately being made non-user-friendly.  Guys, register with the other sites and use their boards.  It's better than having the Gestapo reading and censoring everything you post.

Users Concerned over eBay Changes to Chat Boards

by: Ron Tello       Tue Feb 10 16:04:08 2009

I share the majority of concerns herein.

My personal gripe is ''The Evil Button Pushers''. It's too easy for a Member to get ''sanctioned'' for any reason NOT pertaining to the rules.

When one or more low-life posters don't agree with another poster's point of view, or they don't like your face...*BLAM!* They hit the Report Button, and it does damage!

Personally, I was murdered on the ''Ask Griff'' thread at Seller Central, on January 15th. I did no wrong, did not flame or post inappropriate material.

Yet, everybody else continued to scuff, fight, throw things and generally violate the rules themselves without consequence.

There's NO Justice there.
And appealing is a Stonewall Experience.
After the format changes, and the noteable drop in traffic, I'm glad I got the boot. There's nothing going on there that's worthy of my participation any more.

Being ''on the outside looking in'' is a 3 Ring Event. The ''Ebay Suicide'' Saga is truely a modern American Horror Movie!

On a side note: The CENSORSHIP continues. I monitor the Forums everyday & I frequently see many innocent to mildly critical threads go POOF before they get 4 or 5 posts.

Recently on SC, there were 2 particular threads that were definantly vulgar & against the rules. One was entitled ''F*** Y**'', and it went on for nearly 2 1/2 hours before the sleeper at the switch woke up. (I have it on pdf!)

The other bad one was just as criminal & it went on to enjoy over 100 posts. (Also on pdf!)

eBay is INSANE, and so are the Button Pushers. And the Mods are WORTHLESS!!!!
It's no longer a ''Community''. It has become a TOXIC NEIGHBORHOOD. Enemy Territory. The Land of The Lost.

It was great while it lasted; I won't look back (but I have my pdf's to enjoy & potentially publish!)

eBay.....PFFFTTttttt.

eBay Advises Members on Australia Postal Work Stoppages

eBay said it would write to Australia Post, the CEPU and relevant government ministers "on behalf of the more than 52,700 eBay sellers in Australia who currently derive their primary or secondary source of income from selling on eBay.com.au (according to June 2006 ACNielsen research), seeking assurances to avoid postal disruptions in the future."

"eBay Selects Click Forensics to Fight Click Fraud"

Another laughable statement from our friends at eBay. eBay claiming to care about someone other than themselves; and concerned about fraud (that's not the fraud that they themselves facilitate on their buying consumers, of course); give me a break.

“MEG 2010—A NEW CALIFORNIA”
http://www.megwhitman.com/california_forum.php?id=2&ftype=4&page=1

    12/22/09 10:08am PST Travis
    All,

Just wanted to drop a quick note and make sure our forum users are aware that Meg ranked #8 on Harvard Business Review's Top 50 CEO list. Check out the list here:
    http://hbr.org/2010/01/the-best-performing-ceos-in-the-world/sb1

She joined eBay when it was just a small start-up company in Silicon Valley. At the time, few people could see the potential in a company with 30 employees and a little over $4 million in revenue. But Meg did. She was inspired by what she saw -- a company dedicated to helping millions of people reach their goals of launching and building their own businesses. Meg’s number one goal as governor will be to help the private sector create at least two million jobs for Californians by 2015. She believes that if we don’t get the economic engine going again – if we are no longer the very best state in which to start and grow a business – there is no way out of this financial challenge. It is about time for a Governor who’s created jobs, who's managed a budget, who's led and inspired large organizations, who listens well and who can drive an agenda.

Please share your thoughts, questions, and concerns here on this forum in a respectful manner and we will happily respond.

      Travis

Is that not enough to make you vomit? We should all be taking the opportunity to post our thoughts on Meg’s forum …
