A true champion ... who never in his life called himself 'A Communist'.

He was a socialist... big difference.

Got that right...but then America seems to have a habit of getting all freaked out about losing control, and promoting propaganda through fear.....Reds under the bed etc....totally paranoid....it's just another point of view, and socialism is not communism as you note.

Carl Marx & Frederick Engels were others that were socialist, not communist, but it was easy to discredit their theories if they were shrouded with fear and prejudice.

Obama is a socialist,  I almost choked when he mentioned those terrifying words that made the rich conservatives shudder with fear...that's right folks..........'Redistribution of Wealth'.....lmao.

That's the last thing the rich want.....the trickle down effect will only happen when the rich reach overflowing.....lol.

Famous Quotes of Engels and Marx.  Judge for yourself where their heads were at....

# A new machine invented in England deprives millions of Chinese workers of their livelihood within a year's time. In this way, big industry has brought all the people of the earth into contact with each other, has merged all local markets into one world market, has spread civilization and progress everywhere.

# Anyone who knows anything of history knows that great social changes are impossible without feminine upheaval. Social progress can be measured exactly by the social position of the fair sex, the ugly ones included.

# Capitalist production, therefore, develops technology, and the combining together of various processes into a social whole, only by sapping the original sources of all wealth - the soil and the labourer.

# Catch a man a fish, and you can sell it to him. Teach a man to fish, and you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.

# Democracy is the road to socialism.

# From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.

# Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven't said enough.

# Religion is the opium of the masses.

# The rich will do anything for the poor but get off their backs.

# Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains.

Absolutely!

I have either one or two single-sided 78s of his singing, but without any autograph. He has long been an individual to command my respect, and his voice was amazing. I seem to remember seeing him on film as well (a western if I recall correctly).

Most theologians also agree that Jesus of Nazareth was also a socialist.
These days he would be called a 'Middle Eastern Dissident' by a lot of narrow minded people.

I still think my favorite recording of Porgy & Bess is the 1958 Ella Fitzgerald & Louie Armstrong.
Ella had perfect pitch... beautiful versatile powerful voice.

Still, this is the first pressing Album release of the original New York Production.
You can get this on LP and maybe CD.

Still like Ella singing.... even if roles were reversed on some aria's in that recording.

My favourite recording of Porgy and Bess (sadly not the whole thing) is the version with Leontyne Price.

I love what Ella Fitzgerald does with it, but it's too jazzy to represent the composer's intentions. Leontyne Price is simply amazing...

The secret sex life of plant bugs

Going by some of the horror stories in women's magazines, sex can be dangerous at the best of times. But a bit of whiplash or the odd carpet burn pales in comparison to the odious habits male plant bugs have developed.

Nikolai Tatarnic is a Canadian postgraduate student based at Sydney University's School of Biological Sciences. He became interested in the secret sex life of plant bugs, or Miridae, while studying evolutionary biology and sexual selection.

And his results revealed that for the female of the species, everything in the garden is far from rosy.

He has focused on the genus Coridromius, a group of tiny plant bugs only 2-4 millimetres in length. They can be found on scrubby waterside plants in Sydney, as well as in rain forests throughout Australia, the Pacific Islands, Asia and Africa.

Since the 1860s scientists have known that Coridromius males have dagger-shaped genitalia, but Nik was the first to suspect that this was because they practise a rough and ready form of mating known as traumatic insemination.

Sex between Coridromius bugs is remarkably unromantic. If girlfriends out there think they are getting a rough deal in the champagne and flowers department, listen to what these bug ladies have to put up with.

Is that a dagger in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Without any attempt at courtship the male pounces on the female, stabbing her in the side of the abdomen with his genitalia - a modus operandi that occurs in only a few other evolutionary distant insects such as bed bugs.

Nik describes his findings as, "extremely bizarre. It's like an evolutionary arms race where each sex tries to get the upper hand in controlling reproduction," he said.

"It seems that traumatic insemination has evolved as a means for males to take control of reproduction away from females," Nik explained. "By stabbing the female in the abdomen they circumvent female storage organs, female secretions, not to mention female behaviour aimed at deciding whether or not to use a male's sperm."

Coridromius plant bugs - males on the right, females on the left. Note dagger-shaped genitalia
But like their brainy human counterparts, the female Coridromius came up with a plan to deal with the cave man-like behaviour of the males. Over time, the females have evolved paragenitalia, a new set of reproductive organs, to counter the damage caused by the males.

In some species this has led to the appearance of a well-developed tunnel in the cuticle of the abdomen, leading to an internal sac which possibly digests the seminal fluids and maybe even the sperm.

Nik first attempted to confirm his theory by looking for holes in the abdomens of female plant bugs in collections, but to no avail. But after catching some local plant bugs and watching them mate, he noticed that the males had a favourite position - they were trying to penetrate the upper right side of the female's abdomen.

Going back to the lab, he realised that most of the bugs had been glued onto the paper on the right side of their bodies. After peeling the bugs off the paper, the tell-tale holes in their abdomens could easily be seen under a microscope.

Nik is also intrigued by the parallel development of traumatic insemination among organisms such as plant bugs and bed bugs that are thought to be far removed on the evolutionary tree. "We may have to consider the possibility that we have the evolutionary history completely wrong," he says.

Children with long hair should not be forced to suffer a haircut-by-force.

It can be traumatic, and may even lead to dangerous behaviour such as collecting icy-pole sticks.

http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd149/BrunswickWA/?action=view&current=DSC03296.jpg

That was the very last light to fall on Australia in 2008

The amazing thing is the light in the sky long after sunset here.

I'd like to get into photography a bit more but it means a new camera... a DSLR and expensive lenses for what I want to do with landscapes etc.   Need a massive wide angle lens as well as high magnification macro for the coins.

This camera is OK for what it was purchased for, taking aerial shots from a light aircraft, because it is 'compact' and easy to handle quickly in that situation.

Wolf Creek

Seriously, I bought that a few months prior to leaving and that as well as the problem with Kangaroos, emus and camels on the road is why I only drove to Adelaide and then put the car on the train to Perth.... traveling solo.

Oh those Pubs... I tended to hang out over San-Souci & Brighton way when I started working and had the chance to escape the shire... so it was different Pubs for me.  Can't recall the names now... too many other things to remember now.

Misha have a look at lumix DMC-fz5 Second hand $120-$150AU in uk or us at moment here is review four years ago $600Au at release. Lens has not worn.

Pics here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11957042@N05/
Notice only +8 macro filter 30+ is only some $50 new
Compare to $2000 set plus, large and bulky set here which, is more about light and macro hand holding
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11976328@N03/sets/72157601617898886/detail/

Under $200 and good macro to 400mm zoom AND f2.8 a bargain in my book.

Hey thanks for that.

I say I'd like a new camera because I'm not satisfied with the amount of field I can get... the pic's may look great BUT, it's a very small representation of what I can see down there on the beach shooting that.

This camera is a Sony DCC-H5.  Pretty well up to the standards of that Panasonic.
Pretty versatile... need to learn how to drive it manually a lot better.
The options are adaptor lenses. Problem is deciding whats best given that some are not all that optically fine and can have light losses in the compound lens.
Hard to decide... cheap lens with expensive postage or expensive lens and cheap postage.
That sort of thing put me off buying online.

Just a matter of time before I can afford a nice high res. Sony, Cannon or Pentax DSLR.
It's a bit late to get into the art of it all, but a large format film type would be fun to play with.

Yes, I can always manage to notice the little nuances in the sky to escape reality for a while.
It's important to take the time to see such beauty.  Can't wait till the bush starts blooming here. That is amazing here as well. All those plants and critters that no longer exist in Sydney are all here in their proper place. Something worth trying to conserve. Developers have other interests and it's only how much money they can make in the short term.
