Looks like there won't be much need for mopping up after tonight's Grand Opening.

This Juke Joint is about as pathetic as my Birthdays in Montello.

Better luck next week.

The rudest bit of opera I've ever listened to comes from Prokofiev's "Lady McBeth of Mtsensk District". You can hear exactly what is going on.

The most insanely difficult aria I've ever listened to (and performed) in opera comes from "Ariadne auf Naxos", the convoluted and extraordinary aria sung by the cool little flirt Zerbinetta.

The most boring opera I've ever listened to is (in my opinion) "Martha", by Flotow. There's only one 'famous' aria in that opera, and the unfortunate heroine has to sing it over... and over... and over again.

The most humane opera I've ever listened to is possibly "Die Entführung aus dem Seraglio" by Mozart. But then everything Mozart composed is pretty close to perfection... and when it's not perfect, it still sounds like it.

And opera is completely off-topic on this thread. Hence it is on-topic.

It's 9:45pm here, and thats what matters, so half of this post is 'on topic' being about the thread title ... "Friday.."

Oh.... says "no rules".
No argument then.

Paul Robeson
Title: Re: The Saturday Off Topic Thread - no rules- Any Topic is On Topic
Post by: **cupie** on October 10, 2009, 02:57:37 PM
Busy guy........

Paul LeRoy Bustill Robeson (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an internationally renowned American basso profundo concert singer, scholar, actor of film and stage, All-American and professional athlete, writer, multi-lingual orator and lawyer who was also noted for his wide-ranging social justice activism. A forerunner of the civil rights movement, Robeson was a trade union activist, peace activist, Phi Beta Kappa Society laureate, and a recipient of the Spingarn Medal and Lenin Peace Prize. Robeson achieved worldwide fame during his life for his artistic accomplishments, and his outspoken, radical beliefs which largely clashed with the colonial powers of Western Europe and the Jim Crow climate of pre-civil rights America thus becoming a prime target during the McCarthy era.Despite being one of the most internationally famous cultural figures of the first half of the 20th century, persecution by the US government and media virtually erased Robeson from mainstream culture and subsequent interpretations of American history, including civil rights and black history.

Paul Robeson was the first major concert star to popularize the performance of Negro spirituals and was the first black actor of the 20th century to portray Shakespeare's Othello on Broadway. As of 2009 Robeson's run in the 1943–45 Othello production still holds the record for the longest running Shakespeare play on Broadway. In line with Robeson's vocal dissatisfaction with movie stereotypes, his roles in both the American and British film industries were some of the first parts ever created that displayed dignity and respect for the African American film actor, paving the way for Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte.

At the height of his fame, Paul Robeson decided to become a primarily political artist, speaking out against fascism and racism in the U.S. and abroad as the United States Government and many Western European powers, failed post-World War II to end racial segregation and guarantee civil rights for people of color. Robeson thus became a prime target of the Red Scare during the late 1940s through to the late 1950s. His passport was revoked from 1950 to 1958 under the McCarran Act and he was under surveillance by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency and by British MI5 for well over three decades until his death in 1976.

The reasoning behind his persecution centered not only on his beliefs in socialism and friendship with the Soviet peoples but also his tireless work towards the liberation of the colonial peoples of Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, his support of the International Brigades, his efforts to push for anti-lynching legislation and the integration of major league baseball among many other causes that challenged world wide white supremacy. Condemnation of Robeson and his beliefs came swiftly from both the United States Congress and many mainstream black organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP).

To this day, Paul Robeson's FBI file is one of the largest of any entertainer ever investigated by the United States Intelligence Community, requiring its own internal index and unique status of health file.

There is also documented evidence from the files released under the Freedom of Information Act that Paul Robeson was drugged under the CIA's clandestine MKULTRA program and subsequently subjected to unnecessary levels of electroconvulsive therapy while under private care in Great Britain as a means to keep him from influencing the U.S. civil rights movement and worldwide anti-imperialist movements during the 1960s.

Despite persecution and limited activity resulting from ailing health in his later years, Paul Robeson remained, throughout his life, committed to socialism and anti-colonialism as a means to world peace and was unapologetic about his political views. Present day advocates and historians of Paul Robeson's legacy have worked successfully to restore his name to many history books and sports records, while honoring his memory globally with posthumous awards and recognitions.]

What a guy !!!!

A true champion ... who never in his life called himself 'A Communist'.
He was a socialist... big difference.

This is the only copy in Australia of this extremely rare picture disc made for the 1949 Paris Peace Conference at which Paul spoke and stuck it right into American society for treating his people so badly for so long.
Art work by Picasso... donated for this production - The Peace Dove.

I also have an autographed 78rpm shellac record album of his.

A true champion ... who never in his life called himself 'A Communist'.

Got that right...but then America seems to have a habit of getting all freaked out about losing control, and promoting propaganda through fear.....Reds under the bed etc....totally paranoid....it's just another point of view, and socialism is not communism as you note.

Carl Marx & Frederick Engels were others that were socialist, not communist, but it was easy to discredit their theories if they were shrouded with fear and prejudice.

Obama is a socialist,  I almost choked when he mentioned those terrifying words that made the rich conservatives shudder with fear...that's right folks..........'Redistribution of Wealth'.....lmao.

That's the last thing the rich want.....the trickle down effect will only happen when the rich reach overflowing.....lol.

Famous Quotes of Engels and Marx.  Judge for yourself where their heads were at....

# A new machine invented in England deprives millions of Chinese workers of their livelihood within a year's time. In this way, big industry has brought all the people of the earth into contact with each other, has merged all local markets into one world market, has spread civilization and progress everywhere.

# Anyone who knows anything of history knows that great social changes are impossible without feminine upheaval. Social progress can be measured exactly by the social position of the fair sex, the ugly ones included.

# Capitalist production, therefore, develops technology, and the combining together of various processes into a social whole, only by sapping the original sources of all wealth - the soil and the labourer.

# Catch a man a fish, and you can sell it to him. Teach a man to fish, and you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.

# Democracy is the road to socialism.

# From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.

# Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven't said enough.

# Religion is the opium of the masses.

# The rich will do anything for the poor but get off their backs.

# Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains.

Absolutely!

I have either one or two single-sided 78s of his singing, but without any autograph. He has long been an individual to command my respect, and his voice was amazing. I seem to remember seeing him on film as well (a western if I recall correctly).

Most theologians also agree that Jesus of Nazareth was also a socialist.
These days he would be called a 'Middle Eastern Dissident' by a lot of narrow minded people.

As an artist I come to sing, but as a citizen, I will always speak for peace, and no one can silence me in this.

I still think my favorite recording of Porgy & Bess is the 1958 Ella Fitzgerald & Louie Armstrong.
Ella had perfect pitch... beautiful versatile powerful voice.

Still, this is the first pressing Album release of the original New York Production.
You can get this on LP and maybe CD.

Still like Ella singing.... even if roles were reversed on some aria's in that recording.

My favourite recording of Porgy and Bess (sadly not the whole thing) is the version with Leontyne Price (http://www.amazon.com/Porgy-Bess-Performance-William-Warfield/dp/B00000I9MJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1255236548&sr=1-1).

I love what Ella Fitzgerald does with it, but it's too jazzy to represent the composer's intentions. Leontyne Price is simply amazing...

The secret sex life of plant bugs

Going by some of the horror stories in women's magazines, sex can be dangerous at the best of times. But a bit of whiplash or the odd carpet burn pales in comparison to the odious habits male plant bugs have developed.

Nikolai Tatarnic is a Canadian postgraduate student based at Sydney University's School of Biological Sciences. He became interested in the secret sex life of plant bugs, or Miridae, while studying evolutionary biology and sexual selection.

And his results revealed that for the female of the species, everything in the garden is far from rosy.

He has focused on the genus Coridromius, a group of tiny plant bugs only 2-4 millimetres in length. They can be found on scrubby waterside plants in Sydney, as well as in rain forests throughout Australia, the Pacific Islands, Asia and Africa.

Since the 1860s scientists have known that Coridromius males have dagger-shaped genitalia, but Nik was the first to suspect that this was because they practise a rough and ready form of mating known as traumatic insemination.

Sex between Coridromius bugs is remarkably unromantic. If girlfriends out there think they are getting a rough deal in the champagne and flowers department, listen to what these bug ladies have to put up with.

Is that a dagger in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Without any attempt at courtship the male pounces on the female, stabbing her in the side of the abdomen with his genitalia - a modus operandi that occurs in only a few other evolutionary distant insects such as bed bugs.

Nik describes his findings as, "extremely bizarre. It's like an evolutionary arms race where each sex tries to get the upper hand in controlling reproduction," he said.

"It seems that traumatic insemination has evolved as a means for males to take control of reproduction away from females," Nik explained. "By stabbing the female in the abdomen they circumvent female storage organs, female secretions, not to mention female behaviour aimed at deciding whether or not to use a male's sperm."

Coridromius plant bugs - males on the right, females on the left. Note dagger-shaped genitalia
But like their brainy human counterparts, the female Coridromius came up with a plan to deal with the cave man-like behaviour of the males. Over time, the females have evolved paragenitalia, a new set of reproductive organs, to counter the damage caused by the males.

In some species this has led to the appearance of a well-developed tunnel in the cuticle of the abdomen, leading to an internal sac which possibly digests the seminal fluids and maybe even the sperm.

Nik first attempted to confirm his theory by looking for holes in the abdomens of female plant bugs in collections, but to no avail. But after catching some local plant bugs and watching them mate, he noticed that the males had a favourite position - they were trying to penetrate the upper right side of the female's abdomen.

Going back to the lab, he realised that most of the bugs had been glued onto the paper on the right side of their bodies. After peeling the bugs off the paper, the tell-tale holes in their abdomens could easily be seen under a microscope.

Nik is also intrigued by the parallel development of traumatic insemination among organisms such as plant bugs and bed bugs that are thought to be far removed on the evolutionary tree. "We may have to consider the possibility that we have the evolutionary history completely wrong," he says.

Children with long hair should not be forced to suffer a haircut-by-force.

It can be traumatic, and may even lead to dangerous behaviour such as collecting icy-pole sticks.

That was the very last light to fall on Australia in 2008

The amazing thing is the light in the sky long after sunset here.

I'd like to get into photography a bit more but it means a new camera... a DSLR and expensive lenses for what I want to do with landscapes etc.   Need a massive wide angle lens as well as high magnification macro for the coins.

This camera is OK for what it was purchased for, taking aerial shots from a light aircraft, because it is 'compact' and easy to handle quickly in that situation.

Seriously, I bought that a few months prior to leaving and that as well as the problem with Kangaroos, emus and camels on the road is why I only drove to Adelaide and then put the car on the train to Perth.... traveling solo.

Oh those Pubs... I tended to hang out over San-Souci & Brighton way when I started working and had the chance to escape the shire... so it was different Pubs for me.  Can't recall the names now... too many other things to remember now.

Hey thanks for that.

I say I'd like a new camera because I'm not satisfied with the amount of field I can get... the pic's may look great BUT, it's a very small representation of what I can see down there on the beach shooting that.

This camera is a Sony DCC-H5.  Pretty well up to the standards of that Panasonic.
Pretty versatile... need to learn how to drive it manually a lot better.
The options are adaptor lenses. Problem is deciding whats best given that some are not all that optically fine and can have light losses in the compound lens.
Hard to decide... cheap lens with expensive postage or expensive lens and cheap postage.
That sort of thing put me off buying online.

Just a matter of time before I can afford a nice high res. Sony, Cannon or Pentax DSLR.
It's a bit late to get into the art of it all, but a large format film type would be fun to play with.

Yes, I can always manage to notice the little nuances in the sky to escape reality for a while.
It's important to take the time to see such beauty.  Can't wait till the bush starts blooming here. That is amazing here as well. All those plants and critters that no longer exist in Sydney are all here in their proper place. Something worth trying to conserve. Developers have other interests and it's only how much money they can make in the short term.

I'd like to learn more about taking great shots.

And now, for something completely off-topic: my cat has had his flea collar removed. I harbour dark suspicions that "the woman at number 9" did it. Close up filters are just one single lens effectively zero light loss and few problems look here.
http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.806~search.close%20up%20filter (http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.806~search.close%20up%20filter)
For coins a home made light box with a +5, +10 , +20 would be my start point. Circular polarisers can help with auto focus or zoom CP a must. In DSLR I use samsung they made the bodies for pentax and are slightly cheaper new, much cheaper used even just a few months old.
Also Pentax / samsung is the only one that really supports ALL old lens . For instance a fully manual macro 75mm screw lens from 1950 can be fitted to current DSLR pentax bodies. Not usually a good choice, as now collectiable expensive and usually needs expensive service. However many excellent macros from the 70 / 90 not expensive . The 50 macro I use from 1980 cost me about $100 is manual focus  replacement similar quality glass would be over $700 new and auto focus not good in macro anyway. Also after 1980 the coatings applied to lens glass are modern chemicals.

Yes.. thanks for that link and advise.
Checking out all the goodies there now.

The light losses I was worried about were associated with wide angle adaptors. They do have a degree optical distortion due to a range of 130o - 180o, but thats of little consern given the subject. It's that get the whole sky in frame I'd like to achive.

Glass - I love it.  A frozen fluid.   Yeah... I collect Art Glass.

This is whats known as Cameo Glass. Genuine and made in France around the 1900's.
I think it's amazing pieces like this survived two major European Wars.
A thin layer of coloured glass was fused to clear on this dish with a coral theme and then acid etched to produce the design in relief. Pretty obviously hand made as the three coral trees are not the same design.

Beware if you see items like this.  Lots of contemporary pieces getting around now made in Eastern Europe and China. This was purchased from a reputable dealer in Belgium for around 230 Euro and is old.
Sadly again... the problem of reproduction works sold by the unscrupulous as originals.

Which reference books about Cameo, and other glass, are considered the best?

I don't have books like that unfortunately. I rely upon what I've learned in the past... been collecting glass for around 15years... most pieces still packed from moving 3years ago. Internet has been a great improvement for research and I've only been using it for 3years too. LOL

I've many interests so the books would become the collection if you know what I mean.
All my research files and books re. political stuff were left with friends in Sydney to use now. Lots of covert survelance pics of bad bad industrial sins in that lot. Years of trying to keep the buggas honest.
All NSW legislation and area specific so pretty useless here in WA. Good for them to continue on with.

As it is, I've virtually zero fiction works.... but some real beauty in the art books collected.
Perhaps I'll post some of the etchings soon if people are interested.  Norman Lindsay works and a recent Daryl Lindsay folio acquired last week.... sketches of the men of the AIF in France during 1916.
All 1st editions dating from 1900 to around 1927.

I like having things of beauty around me. It helps cope with an ugly World outside.
Can't help it... I'm from a family of Artists, Engineers and Teachers.
No choice in the parents or place of birth. LOL

Time for me to go I think.. been a long day.   Night all.
