How Meta went from a trillion-dollar company to mass layoffs

Meta’s (META) recent mass layoff marks a turning point for a company whose business model once seemed untouchable despite years of controversies over privacy and Russian election interference.

While some might blame Meta’s fall on CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s obsession with the immersive online world known as the metaverse, that’s only one factor that helped send its stock price plummeting 70% in the last year. Other major blows include the rise of short-form video platform TikTok, Apple privacy changes that hurt advertising revenue, and a lack of Gen Z users.

“The company literally has one foot in one direction, which is the metaverse, and another foot in short form video trying to compete with TikTok, and it's not doing either particularly well at the moment,” Forrester Research Director Mike Proulx told Yahoo Finance.

TikTok’s rise, and a graying Facebook
Meta faces threats from both its own aging user base and the rise of TikTok, a Chinese app with more than 1 billion monthly active users.

The key to TikTok’s success is its short-form video format and algorithmically driven For You page, which serves up a stream of videos designed to mesmerize you. As TikTok rose, Meta focused on taking on rival Snapchat, aping its ephemeral video features. TikTok continued perfecting its algorithm and creating a new destination for Gen. Z users.

Meta’s attempt to take on TikTok’s short-form video, Reels, isn’t catching on with those younger users either

“We know that meta has a Gen Z problem,” Proulx explained. “The market share for Reels amongst Gen Z is far lower than that of tech TikTok.”

According to Forrester, just 40% of teens between 12 and 17 say they use Facebook weekly — down from 48% in 2021. Sixty-one percent of those teens say they use Instagram weekly, and 69% use TikTok.

An August Pew Research Center survey found that just 32% of teens use the main Facebook app, while 62% say they use Instagram. TikTok is pulling in 67% of teens.

Unfortunately for Meta, TikTok continues to gain traction among both users and advertisers.

“Two years ago it wasn’t clear that TikTok was going to be as dominant as it is,” Julie Biel, portfolio manager and senior research analyst Kayne Anderson Rudnick, told Yahoo Finance Live. “They’re kind of eating [Meta’s] lunch, and seeing an economic downturn, we shouldn’t be surprised that advertisers are pulling back spending [at Meta].”

The economy and Apple are squeezing Meta’s moneymaker
The weakened economy is also hammering Meta, which generates the vast majority of its revenue through online advertising. One of the first line items companies cut as part of their cost-savings measures is their ad budgets — directly impacting Meta’s bottom line.

Meta is also still dealing with the fallout from Apple’s (AAPL) iOS privacy changes called App Tracking Transparency. The feature, which Apple rolled out in 2021, lets users choose whether apps track them across third-party apps and websites. Before the ad market started drying up, Zuckerberg warned that Apple’s privacy changes would kill digital advertising.

The slowing economy and Apple’s privacy changes combined to create a bleak couple of quarters for Meta. In the second quarter of this year, it reported its first year-over-year drop in sales — and it reported its second-ever decline the following quarter.

Meta is plowing cash into a massive gamble
Even with declining revenue growth, Zuckerberg continues to put pressure on the company by steering billions of dollars towards his plans for the metaverse.

In 2021, Meta spent $10 billion on its Reality Labs division, which builds out the firm’s metaverse hardware and software. Meta has already spent more than $9 billion on the project so far this year. During Meta’s recent third-quarter earnings call, CFO Dave Wehner said metaverse spending will increase even more in 2023.

These billions will go to fund an endeavor that people might never even sign up for. According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta’s “Horizon Worlds” is, so far, a dud. Meta initially wanted to have 500,000 users in the app by the end of 2022, but it scaled that back to 280,000. That’s because there are fewer than 200,000 running around the lonely digital domain.

In October, Zuckerberg suggested the metaverse could also become a virtual workspace, but experts remain skeptical of the Meta CEO's business case for Reality Labs.

“They’ve been trying to convince us that the business use case for VR is really there, and I have yet to have someone really explain it to me in a way where the economic model makes a lot of sense,” Biel said. “I don’t think anyone really wants to sit in a VR space and conduct office meetings. They’re already bad enough as it is.”

While Meta will cut costs by axing workers, Proulx said the company also has to rebuild its business plan if it wants to ramp up momentum. Turning things around at Meta could mean the company choosing between the metaverse Zuckerberg sees as its future, or the social media apps that made it giant.

In the meantime, Proulx said, “We predict a bleak 2023 for Meta.”

Having the sniffles in winter does not automatically mean you’re sick. It’s often a sign your nose is doing its job. The nose heats up and moisturizes air before it enters the lungs. Bones in the nose are covered with blood-filled membranes. These membranes sit behind the nasal cavities, and the blood flow keeps the space warm.

When you breathe cold air, the nose membranes secrete water and mucus. It’s like a mini steam bath with moisture dripping down the walls. The colder and dryer the air, the more water and mucus is produced, which leads to more sniffles and extra tissues.

Why does cold weather make me need to pee?

It can be rather annoying, but when we're exposed to cold temperatures, we more frequently feel the urge to use the bathroom. But why and what is considered normal as the weather changes?

During winter, people tend to layer up to keep their body nice and toasty. But when nature calls, it can be quite an ordeal to get out of some of those clothes. Unfortunately, a lot of people feel like their bladder gets full faster when it’s cold outside.

You might be dressed accordingly for the cold temperatures in your area, but that doesn’t mean your body isn’t going to react to the freezing winter weather. Having to urinate more often in the winter is completely normal. And there's actually a name for it. It's a condition called cold diuresis.

The ‘cold diuresis’ phenomenon
When you expose your body to the cold to get from one place to another or to take part in cold weather activities, your blood vessels naturally constrict. This happens so that your body can direct blood flow to your vital organs as a way to maintain warmth in those areas - a process called?"peripheral vasoconstriction," according to Cleveland Clinic.

Your kidneys are responsible for creating urine as a way to filter out waste from your blood. On an average temperature day, your body will usually produce about 1 to 2 quarts of urine. Cold weather will result in your body needing to filter more blood than normal as a greater volume of blood rushes to your vital organs at a higher frequency. This results in you having to pee more often. Sure, it’s an annoying process, but rest assured that it's perfectly normal.

There doesn't appear to be any set temperature that will induce cold diuresis, since age, body composition, diet, and even posture can influence whether or not it will occur.

The hypothermia connection
Even though cold diuresis is normal, it is still a good idea to stay aware of when you need to urinate if you are in the middle of a winter outdoor activity. Cold diuresis is also the body’s way of preserving heat when it senses you may be in danger of hypothermia. That's why medical experts believe that an increased need to use the bathroom can be one of the first warning signs of hypothermia - a life-threatening condition that causes your body to lose too much heat.

It can result in shivering, confusion, slurred speech, shortness of breath and death. It's important to get to a warm, dry location quickly and seek medical attention immediately, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Rick Curtis, director of Princeton University's Outdoor Action Program, says watch for the "-umbles" - stumbles, mumbles, fumbles, and grumbles that show changes in motor coordination and levels of consciousness.

It might be tempting to drink less water or skip a bathroom break. However, drinking less water is not a healthy alternative and neither is holding it for long periods of time. You are probably going to make yourself pretty uncomfortable and could cause a urinary tract infection to develop. This will cause a whole new set of problems that you’ll have to deal with that are a lot more annoying than another bathroom break.

Also, since your body is using a great deal more fluid and you’re having to use the bathroom more, make sure that you are replenishing these fluids so you don’t get dehydrated. It might not be warm outside, but that doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to retain your fluids.

You should also remember to drink extra water when you come in from the cold, because even though you probably didn’t sweat, you may still have lost too much fluid from the effects of cold diuresis.

Federal Government Funds University Programs Promoting Anti-American Ideologies

Joe Biden’s Department of Education (DOE) was called out by Just the News for the outlet’s weekly award for wasteful spending of taxpayer money. DOE was singled out for a program that allocates $2.9 million to 11 Middle East Studies Centers (MESCs) that are affiliated with American universities. The centers promote leftist political causes according to an investigative report by watchdog group OpenTheBooks.com.

OpenTheBooks based its research on an investigation by the National Association of Scholars (NAS) that found the MESCs have “veered from their purpose, now pushing overtly anti-West ideologies focusing on social issues such as Islamophobia and immigration at the university level, and even pushing critical race theory to K–12 educators.”

The NAS report is titled “Hijacked: The Capture of America’s Middle East Studies Centers.”

Some of America’s most prestigious universities were named by NAS for hosting MESCs pressing the radical instruction, including Columbia University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, New York University, the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and the University of Chicago.

NAS analyzed the 11 MESCs out of 50 that operate at universities nationwide that have been designated as “National Resource Centers.” That designation entitles those programs to receive federal funding. Each of those 11 MESCs receive $260,000 annually from the DOE.

MESCs were designed to facilitate the study of Middle Eastern politics, language, and culture. NAS found in its research that the centers “have since shifted their focus to promoting left-wing ideologies.”

NAS senior research associate Neetu Arnold said in a statement that MESCs “today play fast and loose with objective truth.” He added that even though MESC bias “has been documented for years, it’s time for taxpayers to be taken off the hook for these activist centers.”

Neetu wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that his research indicates that National Resource Centers in the Middle East are often involved in “efforts that promote sympathy for illegal immigration and portray borders as inherently immoral.”

Just the News reported that DOE failed to respond to a request for comment on its story regarding the use of millions of taxpayer dollars on leftist and anti-American MESCs.
