Even if we do get a government formed out of all this, I predict the only real safeguards will be in the guarantee of Supply and some basics.

The rest of the playing field is going to be 'fair game' and I believe we are going to see political games played on a level never seen before.

Seems Oakeshott is still jabbering away..... one wonders when he is going to just tell us (or IS he enjoying the power and the limelight too much?)

Yes, we're now OFFICIALLY doomed, rather than doomed-in-prospect.

Candidate          Party            Votes    %    Swing (%)

OAKESHOTT, Robert  Independent     40,066  47.15  +47.15
LIPS, Frederik     Labor           11,457  13.48  -18.50
GILLESPIE, David   The Nationals   29,216  34.38  -15.75
WRIGHT, Barry      Independent        586   0.69   -0.50
OXENFORD, Ian      The Greens       3,645   4.29   -2.75

In looking at the non-Oakeshott vote, the Coalition - (sorry) the Liberal/National Coalition - still outpaces the Labor/Greens Coalition by a factor of 2 to 1. The swing away from all other parties was universal, but the greatest was away from Labor.  That kinda suggests something to me - or am I just ignorant?

There's someone at the other side of the room I'm in, reading another board (PS) and there are already warnings from one of Oakeshott's constituents ... I think Ubb could rent out his Barrett's for good dollars in Lyne......

Well, Kev got moved out of the way.... Julia has borne the brunt and hung in there which is a bonus for Labor, so there is only one question left...

How long before the ranga scapegoat is moved aside to make way for the REAL person Labor wants in the front seat, since they will be able to ascend the throne with an easily spun decision of the party to retire Julia from the job for a lacklustre result in the election...

Elantra my friend - you have no idea. research internet filter and even sites like Oztion will be blocked. Your local school canteen will have to rename itself. Youtube access will be a huge problem. Nearly every site will be affected unless of a religious nature or Government run. All under one big NBN with one central authority recording and storing everything you do. I am so over this shite. The internet will be so much drivel nobody will even bother with it.
Unbelievable.
Secondly the internet will not be as fast as predicted and this filter will adversely effect it's performance. Also hope you have plenty of money for monthly connection fees and ongoing monthly charges. They will be enormous. For this I personally thank all labor voters. Our household income is slightly less than $20K a year with 4 people to support.
Carbon tax - peril
filter - peril
NBN - not needed. Very happy with current set up
Debt - peril, peril and generations of peril
etc, etc, etc

Once again I thank every Labor voter.
PS - I don't appreciate your insinuation that I look at the wrong sites. Nearly all sites will be affected - period.

Trala!! you are missing a very vital point as far as the filter is concerned.

Have you ever sifted flour? Its by far slower than just pouring it in a mixing bowl, agreed?

Well the Grrr.. filter will be just like that EVERY page you go to will have to go through the sifter EVERY BLOODY PAGE.
You say you don't go to sites that need filtering, tell me how would the filter KNOW that pages you visit do not need filtering?

It CANT know until it has checked it against its database.

One has to wonder if the fast internet was thought up to compensate for the stupid BLOODY FILTER

If people can not see that then there is not much hope for any semblance of intelligence in the vast majority of the populace

the difference is the coalition was a coalition prior to the election and people knew thats what they were voting for

prior to election Labor and greens were opposition and therefore some of the people whom voted greens would not have been aware nor wanted their votes counted as Labor

anyhow at the end of the day its immaterial as there is absoloutley no way a govermnent set up in this fashion can last more than a few short months

I am, I think, happy with the results.  It looks like regional Australia will be a big winner.

Regarding the NBN - I am so happy that this will go through, you see I am very unhappy with the internet service in this area.  And over the moon that we will be one of the first to get NBN.

I also hope that this is a big wake up call for both major parties - they offered us nothing much during the election period - we are sick of negative election campaigns.  We are sick of our politicians sticking to the party lines instead of looking after their electorates.

I think we are in for interesting times

well, the "Filter" will not worry me, I do not go to the kinds of sites that they are talking about blocking.

That's IF they stick to "the kinds of sites that they are talking about blocking" and don't go outside the square.

That's IF they don't slow down everybody's access

That's IF you don't mind shelling out chunks of you taxes for a system your average 12 year old can bypass.... and that doesn't consider any of the several other ways of this stuff getting distributed that the filter doesn't even go near.

Then there's the NBN. Underpriced and oversold - it's going to cost at least 4 times as much as claimed and has so many logistical (and political) issues, the rollout will face endless hiccups.

In the end, the cycle will continue... the Coalition (sorry again.... Liberal/National Coalition) will make the hard decisions (and copping all the shite) to get the business of 'Australia' in the black, only to have Labor (err... the Labor/Greens Coalition) come along and party with it.

As much as you might hate it, the only way Labor was able to supposedly "manage" Australia through the GFC was from the hard work and tough decisions by the Howard government over very many years to build up the financial resiliency.

Until the Liberal/National Coalition gets back in to be the bad guys once more, the books will get run down. It happens every time Labor gets in.

I have always found it tiring and predictable - Labor makes its biggest impact on the political scene when its been in opposition for a while, a new generation of voters come along - and the campaigns feature a good slogan or jingle.  The classic example of that is Gough Whitlam, with the very catchy "It's Time" jingle - and we all saw where that went.  (I always find it humurous when people blame the Governor-General over that. The GG has no real powers - it is a nominal role bound by procedure, legislation and the constitution.  The circumstances demanded action - and in the light of a stubborn government in an untenable position, there was only one that could be taken .. with the GG the appointed voice to announce it.)

MM, for your sake - and that of everybody hanging on that promise - I really, really would like the NBN to deliver what it has been spruiked about it. Honestly, I do.  But I am still concerned about two things: the logistics and the fact that priorities will STILL be driven by 'where the votes are'.

Poddy - This was an excellent idea for a thread..... perhaps it could have been better described as the Political Sh!tfight Thread .... who knows - perhaps there is potential there.
Anyhow,  Let the fun begin!

Mining tax back to haunt Labor

The new Labor Government has been accused of trying to back out of a deal to hold a comprehensive tax summit, just one day after clinging to power with the support of two key independent MPs.

Under its deal with independent MP Tony Windsor Labor has agreed to hold a tax summit by 2011 to discuss all options put forward by the Henry Tax Review earlier this year.

Mr Swan says the Government is already committed to the tax and if independents want to discuss elements of the legislation they can.

"We made that commitment at the election and we have a committee which is being chaired by Don Argus who's looking at all the detail," he said.

"Tony Windsor and the independents will have views about the design of that tax which they can express to the Government but we have to move forward with legislation."

There ya go..... Get that into ya Mr Windsor! We got yer vote - now you can get ta buggary! And this is DAY 1.

Forward, the Gillard Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the pollie knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the Labour hundred.

3.

Liberals to right of them,
Greenies to left of them,
Commies in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with 24 hour media,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the Labour hundred.

4.

Flash'd all their teeth bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the uncommited there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Commie and Greenie
Reel'd from the satire stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the Labour hundred.

5.

Liberals to right of them,
Greenies to left of them,
Commies behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with Truth and tell,
While Rudd and Garret fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of Gillards hundred.

I am sure that this thread will be resurrected as time goes on, once the results of the aftermath begins to emerge

Mr Oakeshott said he would decide on Ms Gillard's offer of a ministry after consulting his family

There you have it folks.
Bought and paid for.

No mention of his constituents, but his family get to decide.

JOOLYA has again shown her hand, 40 pieces of silver?

I would say its doubtful he will accept , based on he has 2 children aged 4 and 6 and his spouse has another bun in the oven that is 7 months cooked
I really cant see her wanting him to spend all the required time in Canberra

this could also cause the labor party drama if he cant attend Canberra due to fatherly duties during sitting times cos then he cant vote so thats 1 of the 2 majority lost straight away

I really cant see a party with this thin a majority lasting long ...struth when Kevin 07 was in charge they had 3 or 4 members away overseas all the time , they will not be able to do this now as once again they lose those members votes if they arent in attendance
