ACCC recalls child car restraints

A child car restraint sold through online auction site eBay is being recalled by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

A child car restraint sold through online auction site eBay is being recalled by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Manufactured by Taizhou Ganen Car Appliance Co Ltd, the WORWO child restraint has been recalled because it does not comply with Australian safety standards.

"In the event of a car accident this breach poses risks of serious injury or death," ACCC deputy chair Peter Kell said in a statement.

"All suppliers and parents should make the safety of children their top priority."

EBay trader Doreen 3058, who sold the restraints in May and June this year, was alerted of the breach by the ACCC and immediately removed the product from sale.

The trader also registered the product with the ACCC's consumer recalls website, while Mr Kell urged people who bought the product to return it to the supplier.

This is the second time in two years a child car restraint has been banned from sale in Australia.

In July 2008, a voluntary national recall of two models of restraint was issued by their manufacturer, Xport Investments Pty Ltd, because they failed to meet Australian safety standards.

"Suppliers, including online traders, must ensure that the car seats they supply meet the mandatory product safety standard," Mr Kell said.

He said suppliers and parents needed to make child safety the highest priority, with safe products easily identified by a label confirming compliance.

He also advised parents never to use second-hand restraints or ones that had previously been involved in an accident.

Ensure a child restraint is in good condition without frayed or worn belts, and wherever possible, have a new child restraint installed professionally by a specialist.

This seems to be less about the goods coming from Ebay, than the actual safety of child seats which should be something heavily monitored....good on ya ACCC.....Now all they have to do is get Fair Trading to start monitoring what's being sold on Ebay or at least give consumers a reporting link for dangerous products....but I guess that's what you get for importing cheap & nasty asian knock offs and not checking the Australian Standards....wonder whether t-shirts with bullet holes have similar safety risks???...lol.

EBay trader Doreen 3058

I agree it is about cheap imported products - but the method of sale (Ebay) is also what this is about - Yes the trader should have known better - but what checks and balances have ebay put into play to assist in recalling this product?

I bet you NONE

They should have an alert section on the front page and perhaps the buying/selling page also

They won;t do it - because it attracts BAD attention!

Well yes......and that too......But Ebay are experts in avoiding all level of accountability or responsibility.....the old 'venue' argument you know.....If however, someone was seriously injured, they could find themselves being sued as part of a damages claim against the seller, and Ebay for allowing it in the first place...but they are further removed from liability than the actual trader.  FT laws require the seller to ensure goods are of marketable quality...not Ebay....so I'm pretty sure Ebay would slide out of that one as slick as whaleshit on an ice flow.  Even though we know they are negligent in their duty of care...they don't know what that means at Ebay HQ.

Even when it comes to fakes, and stolen goods, fraud, you name it, they never take responsibility....I guess that's why so many are avoiding Ebay in droves...it's just not safe or pleasant to shop there anymore.
