How the “Dog Days of Summer” Got Their Name

Beach vacations, the smell of sunscreen, and the sound of kids splashing in the pool mark the arrival of the so-called “dog days of summer.” While, to most of us, the well-known phrase evokes drowsy canines panting on a sweltering day, it has nothing to do with man’s best friend. Instead, “dog days” refers to an astronomical observation made more than 4,000 years ago of Sirius, a star 8.6 lightyears away from Earth.

In the ancient world, people followed the stars much like we mark the days of a calendar. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, came into position each year at the beginning of the hottest months in the Northern Hemisphere. Appearing just before dawn, the star was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians as the fertility goddess Sopdet. They called Sirius the “Star of Isis” or the “Nile Star” because its helical rising came at the time of the river’s annual summer flooding, which brought bountiful crops.

The ancient Greeks took Sirius’ presence a little more, well, literally. The bright star is part of the constellation Canis Major, which means “big dog” in Latin. The ancient Greeks nicknamed Sirius “dog star”; the name Sirius itself derives from the Greek word seírios, which means “scorching.” The star's annual appearance coincided with a time of year associated with extreme heat and, as described in Homer’s Iliad, a time of dangerous fever.
A bit later in the timeline, ancient Roman scribes like Seneca and Pliny posited that Sirius' early light contributed to the heat of the rising sun, and brought with it di?s canicul?r?s, or “dog days,” which were blamed for everything from drought and vicious dog attacks to laziness and difficulty in concentration. They had a point: Who doesn't feel at least a little lazy and unfocused on the hottest days of the year?

To Defeat Delta Variant, Experts Recommend Doing All The Things That Didn't Work The First Time

U.S.—To defeat the massive, scary, definitely world-ending wave of COVID being driven by the delta variant of the deadly, frightening disease you should remain afraid of for the rest of your life, experts are recommending we try all the things that didn't work the first time.

From wearing masks and social distancing to locking everyone down and destroying the economy, experts are all suggesting that we just try the same things we did last time that didn't work at all.

"We are going to lock down, wear masks, and social distance, all of which didn't work, but hey. It's worth trying again," said Dr. Anthony Fauci in a television interview this morning. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That's what they taught us in science school. Look at my lab coat. It's white. Do you like it? It has pockets."

The television anchor then assured Dr. Fauci that his pockets were very nice.

"Thanks. I also have the heartbeat thingy. I like to breathe on it to warm it up. Makes me look official and doctory and whatnot."

At publishing time, experts had clarified that while we're going to be doing the same things that didn't work over and over again, we're going to be doing them harder this time.

62. Consider yourselves warned
We've heard of statement shirts before, but this geezer right here takes the cake. Let's break it all down a little. First, he says you should walk way because he is an old grumpy man. We don't know about you but if we read that, we're already gone in the blink of an eye. Then he says he lives in Colorado and was born in October... Wait is this a dating profile?

Progressive Christian Offers New, More Open, Less Judgmental Christianity —
No, Wait, It’s Just Satan Again

LOS ANGELES, CA—There are several recognized problems with Christianity. Many of the adherents seem to stick to old, backward ways of thinking. They tend to be judgmental and look at things as “good” and “evil” based on their outdated views. A new progressive Christian has arrived on the scene, though, who preaches a more open, modern Christianity that’s less judgmental and takes people as they are.

“I was a completely healthy kid. There was nothing wrong with me,” said college athlete Greyson Follmer. However, after taking the COVID jab, this 19-year-old described being in and out of the ER 15 times with myocarditis (swollen heart area). And now life holds a much different—cloudier—future for this teen.

Every person who has a COVID shot injury has a face, a name and a story of what they had hoped for in their life. We must listen and we must help.

It is one thing to knowingly and willingly accept the risks. But right now, our nation is hurling down a path to forcing millions to have this shot or else ... no school, no job, no shopping, no groceries, no medicines, no travel, no events, no surgery, and the list goes on!

Liberty Counsel Action is one of the leading organizations that recognizes the danger and is helping millions of people who are pleading for help. We are fighting against one of the greatest threats to freedom in our nation. —Mat

Previously Redacted Email Between Peter Daszak, Anthony Fauci Suddenly Sees Light of Day

A group of Republican senators released the full contents of an April 2020 email between the leader of a nonprofit group with close ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Dr. Anthony Fauci that had previously been redacted.

The federal government previously said the redacted version of the email, released to the public as part of a BuzzFeed News Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, could have reasonably been expected to interfere with law enforcement proceedings.

Quick tips for clearing your house with a shotgun

As a responsible gun owner, you often have to ask yourself, how prepared are you? To survive an emergency such as a home invasion or a burglary, you need to master the fundamentals of doing a clean sweep, or in simple words, you need to know how to clear a house using your firearm.

In some instances, you may not have the time to call the police or be able to do so. However, with the aid of your shotgun, you can clear your house and take the time to call 911 afterward. Here are some pointers to prepare yourself and be ready for when the moment comes.

Sue is a long-distance bicyclist. Three months ago, she was training for another triathlon. But the COVID shot robbed her of the use of her legs. Rather than admit the shots are injuring Americans, stories like this athlete's are censored by the media and by the government.

Now, Joe Biden is trying to force people to take the shot whether they like it or not—and he's starting with the employees at the largest health care employer in the country—the VA.

We are flooded with the desperate pleas for help from people being forced to choose between losing jobs or education to the shot mandate, or potentially losing their lives and limbs to the shot itself.

With God's help, we will answer their cries for help!

We also need your help to support the legal fight for freedom. Please, make your best possible, sacrificial gift today. And thanks to a special Challenge Grant, YOUR impact will be DOUBLED! Select here or the button below to FUND THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM. — Mat

St. Louis Brings Back Mask Mandate, State AG Has Other Plans…

If you haven’t heard, there’s apparently a new COVID variant on the loose. It’s called the Delta variant, and according to just about everyone, it’s even more deadly and dangerous than the first round that ravaged our nation and the world. The only question is how much more.

Now to be clear, the first variant of COVID has a mortality rate of less than one percent, meaning that you are over 99 percent likely to recover from the disease should you ever be infected with it. So saying the Delta variant is more deadly could mean you’re only 98 percent likely to recover. The fact is, at the moment, much like when the first-round hit, we just don’t know enough yet to say for sure.

With that said, just like the first round, people are getting far too carried away by fear.

As you well remember, March of 2020 introduced COVID-19 to us, and in the coming months, things like social distancing, mask mandates, and statewide shutdowns were implemented.

And for what?

People with masks still became infected. Those who shuttered themselves indoors for months on end still wound up in the hospital. And the economy took a complete nose dive we have yet to recover fully from.

But it seemed some people, particularly the liberal side of politics, didn’t seem to learn anything from our gross exaggerations of last year. Or at least those in St. Louis, Missouri, didn’t.

As of Monday, the city and St. Louis County began reinforcing the same mask mandates that existed last year, even though numerous vaccines are now available. According to a news release from the St. Louis Department of Health, all those in public indoor spaces over the age of five are required to wear masks. And yes, that goes for those who have been fully vaccinated as well.

Why?

As there is so much unknown about the Delta variant, there is concern that the vaccines won’t be effective against the new variant. And there might be something to that.

According to recent studies, the popular Pfizer vaccine is about 98 percent effective against the first variant. However, with the Delta variant, that effectiveness drops to about 88 percent. Moderna also says their vaccine is less effective towards the variant, although no specifics have been given yet.

The one-shot Johnson & Johnson, as well as the similar in design AstraZeneca vaccines, are also said to be less effective, with a near 33 percent efficacy rate.

However, does that lack of efficacy mean that Americans should once again be forced into mandated practices that still can’t be proven entirely as worthwhile?

Missouri’s Attorney General Eric Schmitt says no.

In fact, Schmitt is so upset by the recent announcement by St. Louis and the surrounding county that he has promised to challenge it.

As he said in a recent tweet on the subject, “The citizens of St. Louis and St. Louis County are not subjects – they are free people. As their Attorney General I’ll be filing suit Monday to stop this insanity.”

And he has a point.

Just like when the first mask mandates hit, this one assumes that the state, federal, or even local governments have the right and ability to force action and submission from the people. It treats them like ignorant children incapable of handling their own health concerns as if they don’t know what is good for them.

Instead of letting people choose for themselves how to react to this perceived new threat, it begs that we all cower in fear and simply follow our liberal leaders blindly. The question is, into what?

As I’ve stated before, just as when COVID first came to America, we don’t really know the actual dangers. And while there is some wisdom in preparing for the worst yet hoping for the best, it’s been proven before that there’s a difference between mere preparation and a full-blown panic.

The closer we get to panic or into letting the government trick us into alarm, the closer we are to allowing them to trample on our Constitutional freedoms, as we’ve already seen happen in the past year or so. If we don’t question and hold our government accountable, who knows what they will bulldoze us into.

It’s a good thing the city of St. Louis has someone like Schmitt to do that for them.

KKK in Palatka Florida Orders the Killing of a Black Former Inmate from the Prison Where Most of Them Work

On December 24, 1865, a new organization was formed in Pulaski, TN. In a short five years, the organization grew in size as separate branches were formed in almost every southern state. The organization’s goal was to reestablish the white supremacy they were rapidly losing by way of new laws designed to promote economic and political equality for Black Americans. As you’ve probably guessed, that organization was the Ku Klux Klan, and they’re still up to their old tricks.

In days past, prior to the discovery of DNA, the good old boys employed only one method of getting their single point across. Fear. And they went to great lengths to instill it wherever they went. Hiding under sheets and pillowcases, they burned crosses in front of homes as a warning, torched Black churches, and left countless limp bodies hanging from branches for all to see. But that’s ancient history. Surely by now, things have changed. Guess again.

The year was 2015. A guy in Palatka, Florida, was still sweating up a storm and breathing heavily as he pulled out his cell phone to snap a pic of his accomplishment. He immediately forwarded it to a friend who showed up at the scene within minutes of receiving it.

New pig law could cut off nearly all of California's pork supply, bacon prices would skyrocket

A new California law for farms could cut off nearly all of the state's pork supply, which would create a bacon shortage in the state and drive up prices substantially.

In November 2018, California voters overwhelmingly approved California Proposition 12, the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative. The bill is aimed at more humane treatment of farm animals would "establish minimum space requirements based on square feet for calves raised for veal, breeding pigs, and egg-laying hens and ban the sale of veal from calves, pork from breeding pigs, and eggs from hens when the animals are confined to areas below minimum square-feet requirements," according to Ballotpedia.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2022, the second deadline of the law goes into effect, which requires "egg-laying hens to be housed cage-free and breeding pigs raised with twenty-four square feet per pig," which would mean expanding animals pens to about 4 feet by 6 feet.

"National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules," according to the Associated Press. "Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market."

Dwight Mogler, who operates his family's farm in Alvord, Iowa, estimates the expanding of hog barns would cost him $3 million.

Barry Goodwin, an economist at North Carolina State University, estimated the new rules would cost a farm with 1,000 breeding pigs 15% more per animal.

Iowa is the number one pork-producing state in the U.S. and the top state for pork exports, according to the Iowa Pork Producers Association, and nearly one-third of the nation's hogs are raised on more than 5,400 pig farms in Iowa.

"With little time left to build new facilities, inseminate sows and process the offspring by January, it's hard to see how the pork industry can adequately supply California, which consumes roughly 15% of all pork produced in the country," the AP reported.

California's restaurants and groceries sell approximately 255 million pounds of pork per month, according to the report, but California farms only produce 45 million pounds of pork.

Matt Sutton, the public policy director for the California Restaurant Association, warned, "We are very concerned about the potential supply impacts and therefore cost increases."

A study by the Hatamiya Group, a consulting firm hired by opponents of Prop 12, claimed that if half of California's pork supply ceased then bacon prices would skyrocket 60%.

"The National Pork Producers Council has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for federal aid to help pay for retrofitting hog facilities around the nation to fill the gap," the AP reported. "Hog farmers said they haven't complied because of the cost and because California hasn't yet issued formal regulations on how the new standards will be administered and enforced."

The Strangest Rocks Ever Found

All around us, from the Earth’s force upon itself, we find structures that tell stories spanning millions of years. From tiny fragments of sediment coating seaside cliffs to monumental structures that appear almost alien or man-made, the forces of nature are at constant work, carving, cutting, and sculpting.

These natural formations have served as objects of value and the center of folklore to ancient people. However, some are the result of more recent events, and others might tell us stories of places far more distant than one might imagine.

5 Amazing 20th-Century Spies

Spies have always been a source of excitement and intrigue. Fictional characters like James Bond (who was partially based on one of the real-life spies below) tend to glamorize the profession, but for the men and women who have worked behind enemy lines, their stories are remarkable for their brilliance, determination, and in many cases, sheer luck.

Hours After GOP Revolts Against Pelosi – Capitol Police Toss Nancy’s Arrest Order In The Trash

Yesterday, Capitol Hill was in turmoil over Nancy Pelosi’s recent demands.
Much like the CDC, Pelosi flip-flopped, requiring vaccinated House members, visitors
and staff to wear masks.

She went even further, calling on the police to arrest anyone that refused to comply.

Well, it seems like this is the line in the sand for many Republicans. Because they fought back and hard.

From Breitbart:

Republican Rep. Barry Moore (AL) slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on her unconditional surrender to the Chinese coronavirus by forcing congressional members and staff to wear special “well-fitted” super masks and ordered the U.S. Capitol Police to arrest those who do not comply.

And he’s not the only one. From the Daily Caller:

[Rep. Thomas] Massie called the rule “INSANE” and refused to follow the mask mandate in a Thursday tweet.

“This is INSANE. Might as well come into my office and arrest my entire staff,” Massie tweeted. “We are not wearing masks. I support the Capitol Hill Police, but the Chief of Police made a mistake here. The physician and the chief of police don’t have this authority.”

Apparently, this revolt is having an effect. Because the Capitol Police were forced to back down.

From The Epoch Times:

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) reversed a decision to arrest people who do not comply with Tuesday’s reinstatement of the mask mandate, saying instead that the consequence for violators will be removal from the buildings.

Florida Posts Record 21,683 COVID Daily Cases

Florida broke its daily cases record for COVID-19 as it reported 21,683 new cases last Friday. This new record exceeds the highest total it achieved even before the availability of COVID vaccines.

Florida #1 in COVID Daily Cases
According to federal health data released Saturday, Florida emerged as the top state with COVID-19 infections. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis continues to push for freedoms for Florida residents, resisting efforts to mask mandates and increasing vaccination rates.

Along with the state Legislature, DeSantis also limited local officials’ ability to impose restrictions that can help control the spread of the virus. For example, the Governor barred school districts from requiring students to wear masks when classes resume next month.

The latest numbers show how quickly the virus is quickly spreading across the state. A day earlier, Florida registered 17,093 new daily cases, by the following day it went up to 21,683. Previously, the highest number of daily cases was 19,334. This happened last January when vaccines were not approved for use.

Are You Noticing 'Shrinkflation' in Your Grocery Store?

Ask the average man or woman on the street what inflation is and they'll be able to tell you.

They might not know the exact current inflation rate, what causes it or how it affects the overall economy. But they know it means higher prices for just about everything.

Ask the average woman or man on the street what "shrinkflation" is and you'll probably get a blank stare. You won't find it in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, but it's being used more and more by economists and media these days.

Shrinkflation is a combination of "shrink" and "inflation." It allows companies to increase operating margin and profitability by reducing costs. While at the same time maintaining sales volume. It's used as an alternative to raising prices in line with inflation.

Smaller But Just as Expensive

Today I want to take a look at shrinkflation. Including how it affects us as consumers and what we can do about it.

Even if you're not familiar with shrinkflation, you've probably noticed the results at your grocery store. Many of the food items you buy are getting smaller. But the prices aren't.

Here's an example reported by National Public Radio. Recently a store customer in Somerville, Massachusetts grabbed a "family-sized" box of General Mills cereal. It seemed smaller than normal.

The weight was 18.1 ounces. He then searched near the back of the store and found one of the old family-sized boxes of that same cereal. It was 19.3 ounces. He took both boxes to the checkout counter where he learned the price was the same.

Inflation's 'Devious Cousin'

Like many other companies, General Mills had downsized the contents of its family-sized cereal. But the storeowner charged the same price as previously. That's why shrinkflation is being called inflation's "devious cousin."

Turns out the customer in the store that day was a former state assistant attorney general and a longtime consumer advocate. He's been tracking shrinking products for a number of years and publishing the results on his website.

"Downsizing (shrinkflation) is really a sneaky price increase," he said. "Consumers tend to be price conscious. But they're not net-weight conscious.

"They can tell instantly if they're used to paying $2.99 for a carton of orange juice and that goes up to $3.19. But if the orange juice container goes from 64 ounces to 59 ounces, they're probably not going to notice."

Sneaky? Yes. Illegal? No.

Now, to be clear, there's nothing illegal about shrinkflation. For the most part companies can put as much or as little content into their products as they want to. And charge whatever they want for it.

The demand – or lack of it – will then determine whether or not that company is profitable.

As consumers, we're better off paying attention to what we're getting for our money than complaining about a shady sales tactic.

We should take the time to figure out what value we're getting. And not fall for the gimmicks companies use to try to convince us to make a purchase. But many of us don't. We tend to be gullible. Especially when we're in a hurry to get to our next errand.

It Starts With Pricing Pressure

Among the many products identified as shrinking in size but maintaining the same price are chips and ranch dressing. Plus ice cream, cat food, baby shampoo and potting soil. As well as paper towels and toilet paper.

Examples include a bag of chips shrinking from 9.75 to 9.25 ounces. And a box of crackers decreasing from 16 to 14 ounces. Ice cream cartons have been shrinking for 20-plus years.

Shrinkflation seems to follow price increases in items such as gasoline or grain. Manufacturers face pricing pressure from inflation. They believe consumers are likely to buy a product for the same price as before, even if it's smaller.

Some manufacturers realize that some consumers will notice a smaller box and perhaps compare the price to the bigger box they're used to buying.

So, those manufacturers sometimes make the new box taller than the old one, but with less content. They hope consumers will pay more attention to the box's height than its width.

The Shrinkflation 'Spin'

One company's spokesperson responded to an accusation of shrinkflation by skating around the issue.

She said, "For consumers seeking the best price per ounce, the most value is normally in our larger boxes of cereal. This change also allows more efficient truck loading leading to fewer trucks on the road and fewer gallons of fuel used.

"Which is important in both reducing global emissions as well as offsetting increased costs associated with inflation."

One superstore said it was selling smaller rolls of paper towels during the pandemic. That was for the purpose of keeping more rolls on the shelves to allow more people to purchase them.

A spokesperson for another company acknowledged they were shrinking the size of their containers. So they wouldn't have to shock shoppers with a sharp price hike.

We Need to Be Diligent

In fairness to manufacturers and storeowners, they're getting hit with the same inflation consumers are.

They have to do something to remain profitable, and their choices are limited. They can either raise prices or shrink their contents. Consumers aren't crazy about either option. But they don't like being deceived.

Economists are telling us that we are paying 7 to 10 percent more for groceries than we were before the pandemic hit.

That probably can't be helped. But we'll do ourselves a favor by comparison shopping more often. And by keeping one eye on the weight of what we're buying and the other on the price.

To your survival,

Robert Boyd

Wuhan Scientists Genetically Manipulated Coronavirus, Congressional Report Says
Investigators say virus likely leaked from Chinese lab during 2019 summer

Chinese scientists manipulated lethal viruses under unsafe conditions at the Wuhan Institute of Virology prior to the coronavirus outbreak, fueling suspicions the pandemic was caused by a lab leak, according to a new congressional report.

The Wuhan lab was engaged in "dangerous genetic modification research on coronaviruses at unsafe biosafety levels," according to the report, authored by the minority staff on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The report includes revelations about unsafe working conditions at the lab, as well as new information indicating the Chinese government sought to mislead the world about the experiments taking place there. Congressional investigators say researchers at the lab "had the ability to genetically modify coronaviruses as early as 2016 without leaving any trace of that modification."

"Nothing is worth more than laughter. It is strength to laugh and to abandon oneself, to be light."
-Frida Kahlo

It is the fate of many famous women to be known primarily for the tragedies in their lives, rather than for their lightness. Artist Frida Kahlo is often thought of in the context of her lifelong health travails and her torrid, sometimes violent romance with another larger-than-life Mexican painter, Diego Rivera. But, fiercely optimistic, Kahlo surrounded herself with beauty and brilliance — not only in the art for which she is so well known, but also in life. She had numerous friends and lovers. She painted her home a bright cobalt blue and called it Casa Azul. (Poet Carlos Pellicer said “the house … seems to lodge a bit of heaven.”) And she was deeply committed to social justice. “I must fight with all my strength so that the little positive things that my health allows me to do might be pointed toward helping the revolution,” she said. That was, for her, “the only real reason for living.”

This Republican Congressman says the coronavirus is part of a much larger Communist Chinese plot

The mystery surrounding COVID, its origin, and how it ended up causing such chaos worldwide continues to be a hot topic.

Given Dr. Fauci’s lies and unwillingness to explain to Americans what really happened, many are left to speculate the motive behind the virus’s release.

And this Republican Congressman says the coronavirus is part of a much larger Communist Chinese plot.

Congressman Mo Brooks of Alabama says that China is actively seeking to use biological weapons to achieve victory over western opponents.

Brooks believes COVID is part of an unrestricted Chinese military bioweapons program.

The Congressman recently released information from a report done by Dr. Li-Meng Yan, a medical doctor, Ph.D. virologist, and renowned independent coronavirus expert.

Dr. Yan bravely defected from Communist China to America after learning about the Wuhan bio-weapons program.

According to Congressman Brooks, the evidence is overwhelming that the Chinese “negligently, recklessly, or intentionally released COVID-19 on the world.”

“Moreover, China engaged in a massive disinformation and propaganda campaign to cover up their misdeeds,” Brooks stated.

Dr. Yan’s report stated that Communist China does indeed seek to “develop a race-based bio-weapon that targets and eliminates some human races while leaving other human races unharmed.”

“COVID-19 is a part of a larger, more comprehensive unrestricted bioweapons program of the Chinese military,” Yan stated.

Of course, Dr. Yan’s bravery comes at a cost as the Chinese are definitely out to silence her for leaking all of their secrets.

Dr. Yan “confirms that the (COVID-19) virus is not from nature and that the Chinese made up the nature-origin evidence and coerced the international academic world into spreading a false narrative.”

People have talked for years about the Chinese government’s plot to take out the world through bio-weapons, but it now appears closer than ever before, and with Joe Biden, at the helm, the U.S. is definitely in trouble.

America’s foreign relations have been in the toilet since Biden took office and his own son has ties with the Chinese Communist Party. There is no way this plays well for the U.S.

Dr. Yan encourages leaders worldwide to ensure Communist China’s potential remaining bio-weapons can be secured and destroyed.

These are scary times, and the absolute submission by the American people to the demands put on them during COVID only adds to the fear that the country is ripe for an attack.

Seven More Reasons to Love Avocados
That You Didn’t Already Know

Avocados have become the darling of the many healthy and weight loss diets, as well as being a staple of the Paleo diet. They are having their ‘moment’ in the spotlight for sure! And for good reason! We all know that they are very healthy for us, low glycemic/low carb and full of super nutrients like healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and serious phytochemicals, but wait—there’s more!

Avocados have been gaining steadily in popularity over the last ten years. In fact, the rate of consumption of avocados has about doubled in the last ten years and demand keeps growing! Mexico and Latin America are some of the biggest suppliers along with California.

Did you know that there are actually over a thousand different types of avocados, but here in the United States, we mainly see the popular Hass avocado most of the time. Although the demand has gone up for this buttery fruit, supplies this year are lower, so you may be paying a higher price for your avo—but they are well worth it for your health and your body!

Here’s a few reasons why:

Journalists Must Stop Covering the Biden Presidency Like It’s Normal
'Politics as usual' approach to reporting won't cut it, will only enable our norm-defying commander in chief

Every American, especially the ones with journalism degrees, understands the critical role journalists play in sustaining our democracy. If politics is the moral equivalent of war—and most experts agree that it is—journalists are the elite commandos operating behind enemy lines, risking it all so the rest of us don't have to.

One shudders to imagine the wretched authoritarianism that might have befallen our great nation if, for example, CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter had lacked the courage to spellcheck former president Donald Trump's tweets. Nevertheless, the threat to American democracy persists.

Political journalists have yet to prove they are up to the challenge of covering Joe Biden's norm-defying presidency. Instead, they cling bitterly to "objectivity," the arcane notion that defined the journalism industry in the years before its largely blue-collar workforce could be replaced by educated intellectuals.

As Margaret Sullivan writes in the Washington Post: "Mainstream journalists want their work to be perceived as fair-minded and nonpartisan. They want to defend themselves against charges of bias. So they equalize the unequal. This practice seems so ingrained as to be unresolvable."

Given the unique challenge Biden and his allies pose to the American democratic experiment, a "politics as usual" approach to journalism is not only inadequate—it is downright dangerous. Effective immediately, our nation's journalists—whose heroism is beyond dispute—must stop covering this moment in history as if there's anything "normal" about it. There isn't!

Biden promised to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the virus continues to decimate the population. Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, elite enclaves frequented by Biden supporters, have become hotbeds of contagion. Democratic politicians have waged biological warfare on Washington, D.C., where the Democratic mayor continues to put lives at risk by ignoring safety protocols.

Journalistic convention might suggest there are "two sides" to a story about Democratic politicians behaving with a reckless disregard for human life. Common sense suggests otherwise.

Speaking of Martha's Vineyard, that's where former president Barack Obama is hosting a super spreader event later this week. He's throwing himself a 60th birthday bash at his $12 million mansion, where nearly 700 people are expected to attend. George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg are among the invited guests.

Journalistic convention might suggest this frightening example of pathological narcissism is merely a "quirk" that Obama's base—Ivy League grads with multiple homes—finds relatable. Common sense suggests that if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

Biden continues to humiliate himself in public, while U.S. athletes embarrass their country at the Olympics. To be fair, we can't really expect them to project American greatness abroad when their commander in chief is drooling all over himself at home. Leadership starts at the top.

Journalistic convention might suggest that invoking the 25th Amendment—by which a president can be removed if deemed "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office"—is an extreme measure that doesn't deserve serious consideration. Think again!

Meanwhile, Biden's adult son Hunter, a former crackhead, is poised to make a fortune selling his "artwork" to patrons who will remain anonymous, except to the "artist" himself. Hunter's paintings, which have been panned by critics, are expected to sell for as high as $500,000 a piece. He was previously paid $2 million to fabricate stories in a memoir about his crack addiction and is presumably still "working to unwind" his investment in a shady Chinese investment firm.

Journalistic convention might suggest this isn't normal—that a president's son so blatantly seeking to cash in on his father's name is a scandal worth reporting as such. In this case, journalistic convention would be right, but for some reason, our typically fearless journalists have expressed little interest in doing so. Common sense suggests their passion for investigating Democrats is not as intense as their passion for investigating Republicans.

German High Court Rules Facebook Illegally Censored Content
Ruling could force social media giant to change how it handles 'hate speech'

Germany's high court ruled that Facebook broke the law by removing alleged "hate speech" without explanation, a move that could force the social media giant to change how it moderates content.

The Federal Court of Justice ruled on July 29 that Facebook violated German law when it removed posts from a German user that were critical of migrants. The court says Facebook should have warned the plaintiff before removing his post, explained the removal, and allowed the user to appeal the removal. Facebook has not announced how it will respond but said it will look closely at the ruling "to ensure that we can continue to take effective action against hate speech in Germany."

The Court of Justice's ruling is the latest challenge to Facebook's content moderation policies. In the United States, state and federal lawmakers are attempting to ban social media platforms from censoring content. Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R.) recently signed a bill that would prohibit social media companies from removing political speech and give users the right to sue platforms that do so.

Facebook claims it was justified in removing the German user's post, arguing the user agreed to be bound by the company's terms of service. The court rejected Facebook's argument, claiming that those terms "unreasonably disadvantage the users of the network contrary to the requirements of good faith."

Without the ability to ban users or content automatically, it is unclear how Facebook would moderate content on the platform. In its defense before the German court, Facebook said it would be "unworkable" to communicate its reasons for removing content to every user it censors.

Facebook relies on artificial intelligence tools, supplemented by low-paid overseas contractors who manually process potentially offensive or obscene content. Critics argue that this largely automated system often leads to unjustified censorship.

The site has made content rules on the fly during the pandemic, "fact-checking" and limiting the reach of scientific pieces arguing COVID-19 could have escaped from a Chinese lab. Facebook has also made sharp changes to its rules on other content. CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the right of Holocaust deniers to post on the platform before banning Holocaust denial from Facebook in 2020.

Garden Ideas For Small Spaces

There’s always room for one more plant in your garden, regardless of how small or large it is! To make your lawn new and exciting, plant a range of perennials or change the plants in your planters every spring. The backbone of your garden must be a combination of trees, perennials, and shrubs for year-round interest and color. Also, to ensure that a plant will survive the winter in the area. It’s pointless to invest money if your plant doesn’t get off to a commendable start.

Business travel might be going out of style

Companies have made it a year and a half mostly without traveling for work — and now more and more of them are considering dramatically reducing business travel to slash costs and cut carbon emissions.

Why it matters: Business travel is a massive part of the global economy — with trillions of dollars and millions of jobs at airlines, hotels and travel agencies hinging on its return.

By the numbers: Corporate travel is coming back but is projected to remain at just 30% of 2019 levels by the end of 2021, according to a new Deloitte survey of travel managers at firms across industries.

Half of the surveyed companies say they're adjusting their travel strategies to be more sustainable. 76% say they're turning more internal meetings that would require flying into online ones, 58% say they'll do fewer business trips overall and 55% say they'll specifically look at cutting back on international corporate travel.

Two-thirds of respondents say they'll reduce the frequency of business trips to save money.

What they're saying: "Companies used to send maybe eight people to close a deal. Now they'll send two people, and the rest will be on Zoom," says Charlie Leocha, president of Travelers United, a passenger-advocacy organization, and one of the architects of a recent Wall Street Journal analysis that projected the pandemic would permanently reduce business travel by 20-40%.

The stakes: Business travelers only make up around 10% of airline passengers across the major global carriers, but they account for 55%–75% of revenue because they're typically the ones who spend big on last-minute tickets or book premium seats, the New York Times' Jane Levere reports.

A permanent setback in corporate travel could push airlines to bump up prices or reduce routes, Leocha says — both of which would hit leisure travelers.
But, but, but: Some parts of business travel will bounce back, experts say.
