You need names, times, dates, descriptions, and hopefully the perpetrators have identifying moles or scars or tattoos.

I always tell people when things start going south - TAKE NOTES!  Then work backwards for as much history as you can, with documentary support if at all possible.

I have found myself in one such situation some years ago - and I followed my own advice.  Those notes gave me victory.

But that was in Australia.  Doesn't seem to be what it's like on your side of the pond, Tello...

Hello April. Remo Ron Here. Remember when Frank Zappa and Moon were at KROQ? Debut of "Valley Girl". I need a witness to say that I was there too. Great Moments in Music History; say I'm not crazy yet! 🤪

April Whitney You were there!

April Whitney Was I?

Ron Tello Culley Yes you was. Yours was the first face I saw when I stepped into the studio lobby. You were at your desk post. Frank was at my left shoulder. And the entire KROQ cast and crew surrounded the room. This I remember. THX!

Is our natural state as human beings harmony? Or is it something else? If it's something else, WHY?

Marc Boensel Our natural state is survival. All of our instincts are to stay alive and to procreate.

Mary Nisbet Asbury I think the natural state varies. Some may have a harmonious nature, a nurturing nature or a violent nature

Paul Werho Because harmony is a Social aspect. It is a learned activity. Our natural state is to exist.
Now, if youre speaking politically...thats a whole different animal...
Just my humble opinion

John Latta Our natural state is animal. Smelly, hungry, horny and violent. That’s it.

Hello everybody Curious if anyone has advice on fighting a speeding ticket from three years ago going 60 in a 55 and the 330 highway going down the mountain in the passing lane. Advice on how to fight the ticket or maybe what I could state as my defense because anybody knows that going downhill of course you’re going to catch more speed regardless if you push on the gas pedal. Please if anyone could help would me greatly appreciated!!!😘

Teri Lay Go to traffic school

Athena Hedges This is real?

Todd Sims It is a difficult situation as L.a. Jones stated. They also shoot radar because on average 2 people die at or below the lower passing lane each year. 1 per year at the middle passing.
I regret the CHP felt they were doing you a favor with the citation because their presence does save lives. Hard pill to swallow, and I’m sorry for your situation.
I don’t see a defendable posture.

Kayla Miranda Ticket clinic

Bob Comperini So you're saying it's legal to go fast because you're going downhill? Brakes don't work? Downshifting don't work?

Todd Mott Did they suspend your license? You gotta stay on top of these things, I learned years ago that they created a system to keep you accountable. Keep your receipts too. Forever.

Sharon Childress Sechser 🤔🤔🤔 wish I could help...they are very strict up here in the mountains..

Mindy Beeson after 3 years i believe it falls off of your insurance. why three years? you have to get on it right away. i am baffled

Steven Michael King I got ticketed for 5 over had witneses and other things. They demanded all present no declarations. IT"S a scam for revinues

Sue Spasbo If I understand your post. You received a speeding ticket 3 (three) years ago and have done nothing including going to your court date. That means, more then likely, a Failure to Appear (FTA) has been entered into your case and a bench warrant might have been issued. So, I suggest you get to court and throw yourself at the mercy of the court. This could end up costing a lot more then if you had just gone to court when requested. The case would have been thrown out for only 5 over the speed limit. Cop just getting his quota. Good luck

Jim Koval I THINK THIS IS A TROLL POST. OUT!

Eric Miller That's why your car has lower gears and brakes. Own up to the fact that you screwed up and deserve the ticket!!

Michael Loguidice If it's been that long ago go to court the cop won't even show up

Jake Gardner Tell them your Dog ate the Ticket and you forgot all about it.

Ron Tello Culley Gravity is an undeniable defense.

Steven Michael King a few do phony tickets....they know it costs too much to fight...and the pressure is on for them to bring in more $$$ than they get paid.....and Ive seen a few judges in the FOntant court house.... who dont care if its less than 5 mph over.....dont expect a fair trial if your lucky enough to get a trial.....you cant win in that court very easy......almost nobody wins no matter how many witnesses etc

Rita Gomez Good luck on that one. You would think that being only 5 miles, you would be let go with a warning but the mountain cops are ALL jerks and let their authority go to their head trying to make their quota.

Teree Alfaro The law is the law....you were wrong! Face the consequences and pay your fine like the rest of us! And if you are dealing with this three years later than you are in for a world of financial hurt!

Deborah Hanson Just sign up for traffic school, and put it in the past where it belongs. Three years ago.

Steven Michael King some in Rimtraffic will make sure its remembered for years to come!

Ron Tello Culley SMK strikes again!

Steven Michael King  at $300-$400 in filing fees and other process related fees.....each time I go to court.....I strike more carefully now....if I ever get my PI case before a jury.....much of winnings beyond medical will go for legal related...

Steven Michael King  need a Championship Belt like what the pro-wrestlers wear....except with a giant golden pizza over the navel

Ron Tello Culley You had me at $400. Now I'm off the page. sry..

Nanette Antunez Deborah Hanson shoot. We all have to go over the speed limit to get past the idiots who won’t move over OR even go the speed limit until they hit this wonderful stretch where we can finally be rid of them! My blood pressure goes up in empathy with you! I he been in this situation so many times.👿. Sorry you got caught!💙

Patricia Lawrence Kirby I got a ticket years ago for speeding. I was going 60 on the freeway. The judge said 56 is breaking the law. Paid the fine.

Noralyn Brechler-Salazar Patricia Lawrence Kirby that’s how it works. “I was only...”, are the opening words of someone who blew it, but wants to blame someone else for it.

Ron Tello Culley Well, I don't know much about it, but one time in 1977 in Florida I got popped for long hair. All I thot of was the last scene in Easy Rider. Oh I lived to tell alright but I'll tell ya what: it doesn't matter how ya drive or what yer drivin'...there's always SHARKS IN THE WATER. (Pull the hair under a cowboy hat).

Steven Michael King "Uneasy Rider" by Charlie Daniels may have inspired many....

Ron Tello Culley Good call, Mate!

Steven Michael King  and then there was "Signs" by the "5 man electrical band" that topped the charts during similar time frames..

Ron Tello Culley Don't get me started. Ok you got me started. Savor my Blog, just the pertinent items if you please..

Youth suicides on the rise in Elko County
TONI R. MILANO tmilano@elkodaily.com  Mar 29, 2019  0

Suicide. The word resonates deeply throughout any community.

For some, it is a painful reminder of the loss of a loved one. For others, it is a category of death that concerns first responders, social workers and lawmakers who are seeking to prevent more deaths.

The reaction to suicide is complex. Those who are touched by the death of a loved one or a friend look for answers for the rise in suicides, especially in Elko County. In recent years the number has skyrocketed, evidenced by more calls to the Elko Interagency Dispatch Center and the county coroner.

According to dispatcher Colleen Piacitelli, the amount of suicide calls in Elko County is rising. In 2018, dispatch received 464 calls regarding threats of suicide, attempts at suicide, or deaths by suicide. Within the first two months of 2019, dispatch has taken 73 calls. Four of them resulted in death determined by suicide.

As the numbers increase, so do the studies that point to a suicide crisis among youth, with Nevada ranking 11th in the nation, according to 2017 data released this month by the American Association of Suicidology. The group reported that “suicide is the second leading cause of death among Nevada youth aged 10-24 years old.”

Elko County chief deputy coroner Nick Czegledi reported in 2018 there were 15 deaths resulting from suicide. In 2017, there were 19. But it’s the age of the victims that is disturbing to him.

“Between 16 and 30 years old is a high zone,” said Czegledi.

He explained that suicides among elderly adults are often due to illness, while those in their 40s or 50s can be a result of psychological trauma such as the loss of a spouse.

“The younger ones seem to be more preventable,” Czegledi said.

Last year, eight suicides in Elko County were between the ages of 16 and 33 years old.

Youth suicides on the rise

Testifying before the Nevada Legislature’s Committee of Education on March 7 in Carson City, Piacitelli said she has taken calls from children as young as 6 years old threatening suicide.

“With insanely increasing numbers, I ask myself, ‘Why do we have our children and young adults turning to suicide?’” Piacitelli said.

The answers might be revealed when a teen hits his or her crisis point, according to Larry Robb, social worker coordinator for the Elko County School District. He opens his office at Elko High School to any student who needs to visit for five minutes or longer, and he and his staff have handled many suicide threats.

“At the time of ‘crisis’ the student does not always articulate a reason,” Robb said. Sometimes it is one or a mix of several factors, he said, including feelings of isolation from peers and/or family; conflicts among them; and a feeling of inability to cope with life’s challenges.

Piacitelli agreed with Robb, adding that “there isn’t one answer. One person’s breaking point is going to be different from another.”

However, one of the top factors seems to be social media posts, Robb said. “Youth have access to many apps that may be used for bullying, blackmail and gossip.”

The school district said about 15 to 20 students reported instances of self-harm through the online reporting system SafeVoice within the past year. The district has seen about one to two suicides per year, but could not provide an exact number “because of lack of reporting,” said Superintendent Todd Pehrson.

Statewide, SafeVoice received 7,383 tips in connection with suicide last year.

Prevention through education

Before a child reaches their school campus, the warning signs are already present, says Lynette Vega, a teacher and suicide prevention awareness advocate.

Sitting at her desk at the Elko Institute of Academic Achievement, Vega remembered how her life changed from a phone call in early 2008 informing her of her 23-year-old daughter’s death.

Rachelle Sloan was living in South Carolina at the time, and was serving in the Air Force. She had returned from a tour of duty in Iraq and had been hospitalized after one suicide attempt two months before she took her life.

“I thought she was getting the help she needed,” Vega said. “This is the one big reason why I’m an advocate for suicide prevention. I wasn’t educated.”

Today, Vega leads a local support group and recently started Zero Suicides Elko County, a nonprofit that will aim to educate the community about how to spot warning signs and talk to someone contemplating suicide.

One lesson learned was that “parents need to take it serious when kids come to them and admit their thoughts to them,” Vega said, adding that parents must also be aware of their child’s changes in habits and outlook on life.

“Sadness and depression are two different things,” said Vega, who teaches life skills at EIAA. Someone can be sad for not getting the thing they want, whereas someone with depression has difficulty getting out of bed and stops engaging with society.

Educating someone with depression to ask for help is vital, Vega said. “Like I tell the kids; they are their biggest advocate when they don’t feel right …. Go to someone who can help, but you don’t give up.”

Her desire to get the word out about resources and warning signs of suicide led Vega to approach Assemblyman John Ellison to sponsor Assembly Bill 114, which aims to enforce a previous law, NRS 389.021, to teach suicide prevention to fifth through 12th grade students.

Speaking before the Legislature’s Committee on Education March 7, Ellison was joined by Vega and Piacitelli. Ellison explained that although it is an unfunded mandate, he appealed to the committee to enforce the statute.

“I’m not asking to put debt on anyone, but to follow some of the laws that are out there on the books,” he said.

The seven-letter word

Starting the conversation about suicide early is necessary to address mental health issues and remove fear from the topic, said Vega a week before testifying in Carson City.

“Parents are worried about the stigma,” she said. “[They] are discriminated. The family is looked at like they have something wrong with them.”

It also includes having the right words to get to an individual’s heart who is in the midst of a crisis. One such program, safeTalk alertness training, has proven beneficial for at least one school administrator who was immediately faced with a student who stated he wanted to end his life, Vega said.

“Up until that day, he had no idea what to say and no idea what to talk about. The training was very helpful for him,” Vega said.

Tackling the subject of mental health head-on by having parents and counselors join forces is necessary to fight the problem and save lives, said Robb.

“Stigma surrounding accessing mental health resources needs to change,” he said. “Thoughts and feelings towards suicide prevention need to change as well.”

No age limit

Suicides are most prevalent among adults between the ages of 45 and 65 whose age group ranks first in data from 2017, according to the American Association of Suicidology. But the prevalence among teens and young adults has risen much faster in recent years.

Vega admitted that in the years after her daughter’s death, she endured a deep depression that gave her another perspective into what the crisis looks like from the inside.

“I went through my ordeal,” Vega said. “Nobody noticed or said anything to me. You can look normal, even if you aren’t doing well.”

“I had to go to a grief counselor,” she remembered. “I couldn’t do this anymore by myself. I had to reach out.”

Coming out of that experience, Vega said it has made her fearless when she notices something is off about a friend or co-worker.

“If I see something going on, I will approach them. I’m not afraid to ask. You can’t be afraid to ask,” Vega said.

The darkness doesn’t last

The uncertainty of how to handle challenges and the burdens of life weighs heavily on today’s youth, said Robb.

“Students report lack of church attendance, aloneness, loneliness, taking on too many roles, such as having to care for younger siblings, or working,” as some other reasons teens contemplate suicide.

Piacitelli hears similar reasons.

“The one factor I hear and see most [are people] coping with everyday life, whether it is school, family or friends,” she told the Legislature. “Our young people are missing this key ingredient to surviving their current moment and thriving into adulthood.”

So how can someone survive the moment of crisis? According to Vega, it comes down to education about the bigger picture and the fact that the pain will not last, which are lessons learned from her daughter’s death.

“I carry the guilt with me that I didn’t learn about suicide prevention until after her death,” Vega told the committee. “She didn’t want to die; she only wanted her pain to end.”

Today, Vega teaches her students to keep in mind a couple of simple truths for when the hard times hit and the pain may seem unbearable. One is that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

The other is, “life is always changing. Hang in there for another day.”

About This Group
Description
Phelan Lowdown is the group who keeps it real. We are up for intense, but respectful, conversation. Respectful being key. Pretty much no subject is off limits.... with the exception of national politics...but if admin cuts it off...it's for a reason. We have a low tolerance for drama, and don't be an anatomical conundrum when you post, I delete those, and you, pretty fast for it.  If someone has done you wrong, feel free to discuss it here, but know there is a difference between being done wrong...and being butthurt. :)

In this day and age with bullying (cyber or otherwise) being so prevalent, any personal attack against another person/admin/moderator will be grounds for either being muted or kicked out, it will be at the admin or moderator's discretion. This includes complaint posts about this group on any other group. We are adults in this group, act like it.

Watch your language. There are certain words that aren't tolerated. Racial slurs and the "c" word are not necessary. I shouldn't have had to add this. :tello: yes you are!

We prefer no for sale stuff...since there is a proliferation of groups for such things already. The largest for the area being Wrightwood Garage Sale group. If you are a local business you are welcome to advertise once a week and I would prefer if you just bumped your ad instead of making a new one, if that's possible.

While we always allow lost/found pets to be posted. If you are rehoming an animal you MUST get prior approval from admin before posting. Any post made without admin approval will be removed. You can rehome for up to $75 if not vetted, up to $150 if they are (fixed and shot record). Any animals being posted that are more than this amount, you must get approval from admin. All animals must be 8 weeks or older. Any pet adopted it's adopter beware. Do your own homework, any issues are not this group's responsibility. Any harassment of people posting animals will be removed and you muted. Do not post looking for a stud/Irma Grese for your own backyard breeding.

Any type of fundraising or gofundme must be approved by admin first.

If you take issue with how this group is run, feel free to unjoin. Posting to the group complaining about it will result in you being removed. I have PMs, say something there. NOTE: swearing at me and calling me names won't get you very far, be warmed.

Any questions, please feel free to PM me...julietteowle

Living With A Narcissist

Have you heard the Greek myth about Narcissus, a man who was extraordinarily handsome and fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water when he leaned over for a drink? Since he couldn’t woo and win his own image, Narcissus died from sorrow by the water’s edge.

The tragic name lives on as the white and yellow flower into which he was transformed and it also means people who are obsessed with their own appearance.

There is actually a medical condition for those who are stuck on themselves: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). In a 2008 study, out of 34,653 adults who participated in face-to-face interviews, some 6.2% of them were identified as having NPD.

Despite the common belief that the female sex is more vain than their male counterparts, more men than women were afflicted with NPD and the disorder was linked with significant psychiatric disability among men. NPD was also inversely related to age: more common in oldsters than youngsters.

Dysthymia is mood disorder also called persistent depressive disorder (PDD). Men with NPD were significantly less likely to have dysthymia compared with men without NPD, the researchers discovered.

It seems that some men become insecure about growing old – who knew? The study authors wrote:

“Substance abuse and dependence may reflect attempts on the part of men with NPD not only to reestablish or maintain grandiosity, but also to defend against the negative affect accompanying dysthymia that often accompanies aging and life’s inevitable limitations. Taken together, these results suggest a propensity of men with NPD to self-medicate to maintain a sense of omnipotence and grandiosity, to protect a very fragile self esteem, and to ameliorate feelings of depression, guilt, and worthlessness associated with dysthymia.”

Many people who haven’t been formally diagnosed with NPD exhibit some of the personality traits that distinguish this mental aberration:

Inflated sense of self
Requires constant praise
Takes advantage of others
Neither recognizes nor cares about the needs of others
True narcissism goes beyond being self-centered or lacking empathy. People with NPD can be very good at hiding their affliction behind a mask of friendliness and charm.

Experts believe that NPD arises from childhood events that created low self-esteem. For this reason, even though narcs (narcissists, for short) have huge egos, they are thin-skinned and recoil from criticism.

There are two main kinds of narc. A cerebral narcissist comes across as an obnoxious, haughty, smart know-it-all who lives inside their own head. A somatic narcissist, on the other hand, is obsessed with personal body image, sexual performance, and physical fitness.

If you grew up with narcissistic relatives (as I did), it can be difficult to admit that there is something wrong with their thinking and behavior. But it is vital for your own safety to be honest about their true nature – and it isn’t pretty.

Following are the nine steps to help you deal with any narc you meet during your lifetime:

Pierce the veil of illusion.
See through the narc’s superficial charm, grand ideas, and promises into the true personality. If you are dining out, is your date nice to you but nasty to the server? Disrespecting others is a hallmark of NPD, as are bullying, manipulation, and lying.

Unfortunately, there is little you can do other than accept the fact that you are hanging out with a narcissist. Odds are slim to none that the narc can (or wants to) change.

Be #1 in your own life.
People with NPD or such tendencies insist on being the center of attention. At first, you may oblige narcs and cater to their every whim. But it’s vital that you stop putting their needs ahead of yours each and every time. In any case, no amount of coddling will satisfy a narc – and you might just exhaust yourself trying.

If you live with a narc or must spend time with one, take regular time-outs for your personal needs. Realize that the narc doesn’t care about your needs and will never gratify them. Furthermore, it isn’t your responsibility to “fix” a narcissistic personality. In fact, it’s well nigh impossible.

Speak up for your own rights.
If you can’t escape a narc (at work or because you live with one), it will probably become necessary to defend yourself against her/his massive ego. Some people with NPD like to upset others, for kicks. If you are targeted, keep your cool and don’t provide any fuel or feedback to encourage this appalling behavior.

Tell the narc, calmly and gently, how their words and deeds diminish your well-being. Be specific and let the narc know how you expect to be treated. Be prepared for a blank stare, denial, or some other form of push-back from the puffed-up, uncaring narcissist. At least you tried.
********************************************************
Narcissists get their name from Narcissus who, according to ancient Greek mythology, fell in love with his own gorgeous reflection in a pool of water and died pining for his own unobtainable love.

People diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) have an inflated sense of self, require constant praise, take advantage of others, and don’t give a toot about the needs of others. They tend to be haughty, vain, self-centered, and either oblivious or uncaring about their own hurtful behavior.

Define the limits of tolerable behavior.
To narcissists, the world revolves around them. They are so self-absorbed that they can’t put themselves in other people’s shoes, figuratively speaking. They will, however, go through your closet and literally try on all your shoes – and perhaps take the ones they like.

Narcissists love to boss you around, tell you how to feel, give advice you didn’t ask for, take credit for your accomplishments or hound you to discuss private affairs in public. You must set behavioral boundaries and stick to them – or else the narc will call your bluff the next time.

Expect resistance.
If you’ve gotten this far with the narcs in your life – put your needs first, set boundaries, and followed through on consequences to their hurtful actions – you have probably gotten their attention. And not in a good way.

A true narc will counter with their own needs list, try to guilt-trip you, go for sympathy or tell you that you are the one who is manipulative and unreasonable. Don’t believe it for a second – and NEVER CAVE IN or else, once again, the narc will know you aren’t serious.

Stay positive about yourself.
People with NPD may be incapable of apologizing because to do so would mean admitting they were wrong about something and must accept responsibility for their own behavior. Instead, a true narc will turn the tables and blame you for what she/he did to you.

Be strong and stand up for yourself. Remind yourself that you are in the right and that you are not the narcissist in the room.

Find strength in numbers.
If you must interact with narcissistic people, limit your time with them to avoid psychological vampirism. Seek out the company of other people who aren’t on a colossal ego trip.

Build healthy relationships in your life around family, friends, clubs, classes, community activities and/or volunteerism. Set yourself up for success despite the narcs in your life.

Realize the narc may need professional therapy.
One of the hardest things I ever did in my life was admitting to myself that my own family is full of narcissists who haven’t yet been diagnosed and are unlikely ever to be so. They truly believe that I am the problem, not them. They have called me crazy and demonized my beliefs. In the next breath, they tell me how much they love me.

In some cases, you could suggest (gently, but firmly) that a narc might benefit from talking to a therapist. But don’t hold your breath. Remember, people with NPD have the mistaken self-belief that they can do no wrong. That doesn’t mean you have to play the doormat and let narcs walk all over you. Above all, don’t let a narc wear you down emotionally and make you sick (mentally and/or physically).

Know when to abandon all hope.
Make no mistake about it: narcissists are abusers. They resort to name-calling, insults, public humiliation, yelling, and threatening. They are patronizing, jealous, and sling accusations.

They love to blame you for everything that goes wrong, monitor your movements or attempt to isolate you, tell you how you really feel or should feel, routinely project their shortcomings onto you, deny things that are obvious to you, trivialize your opinions and needs or attempt to gaslight you (manipulate events and situations in order to make you believe that you are the crazy one).

When possible, be prepared to move on if the narc is abusing you verbally, emotionally, physically – or is making such threats. Likewise, put on your traveling shoes if you feel manipulated, controlled or isolated; if the narc shows signs of mental illness or substance abuse, but won’t get help; or if your mental or physical health is suffering from their mental disorder.

Narcissists only pay attention to you when your speech or actions impact them directly. Stay calm, be perfectly clear, stand firm, and be prepared to exit, stage right.

:tello:    Perhaps someday new legislation will be passed to eradicate narcs altogether to make the world safe for Democracy once again. Just sayin'....
