Aus Post tracking says "Delivered", but where to?

Sold an item on eBay

Posted with tracking 6/9
Tracking shows as "Delivered" on 8/9
Received a Where is my Item email 13/9
Asked buyer to check with local PO in case they were holding parcel
Buyer advised that they had checked and there was no item at PO 15/9
Contacted Aus Post to open an investigation 15/9
Sent replacement parcel to buyer 16/9
Tracking shows as "Delivered" on 20/9

Buyer emails to say that original parcel turned up today as well! 22/9

No word yet from Aus Post .... 

I wonder where the parcel was delivered to? Was it taken to the wrong address and Aus Post have retrieved it?
Or was it not delivered at all and has been sitting in the back of the truck or delivery centre all this time?

 Yes Wheels  I have found the "delivered" message not quite right... but have worked out it may be sitting in a depot
somewhere, waiting to get on its way again.

Yep thats their motto at Australia Post "we deliver" they just dont say when or where !

Wheels did you complete the delivery instruction section? If so what instruction did you use?
If you used the one that says its ok to leave safe if no one home , what can happen is that the parcel contractor sometimes puts the package in a place and the receiver doesnt notice it , its only when a complaint is lodged he will go back and retrive it and place it elsewhere more visible or leave a card in the letterbox advising where it ben left etc

No Smee, I didn't select any instruction, it was probably one of the only times I haven't selected to take parcel to PO if nobody is home. I'll ring Aus Post today to get an update on their investigation and see what they say. The buyer is sending the original parcel back today Return to Sender. I wonder if I can ask for the postage costs to be reimbursed?

Yep , thats the one I use too , it reduces the chance of items going astray , I reckon thats whats happened then , if no instruction , then its likely it has been delivered and sitting in a concealed spot at the buyers house all the time ...it is a surprisingly comon occurence ,
Some contractors have been known to place parcels at receivers back doors , some people whom work everyday might no go out the back for a week or so , if they enter and leave the house via the front door daily when they go to work , they only find the parcel when they go out back to hang the weeks washing or whatever

Another place some contractors place small parcels and satchels is in the meterbox which is fine if they do what they are supposed to do and leave a slip in the letterbox saying where the hiding spot is , but useless if they dont leave the slip as it could be months before the meterbox is opened by anyone and even then more likely to be the meter reader than the resident

Update: I just phoned Aus Post. There was nothing on the computer to show that the original parcel had been discovered and delivered. I'm now wondering if it was delivered to the incorrect address and the recipient has then redelivered it to the correct address themselves. Seems Aus Post didn't know that it had turned up! Oh well, at least it got to the destination eventually.
