EARTH HOUR
« on: March 26, 2011, 05:40:28 PM »
Please join in Earth Hour 2011 this evening, 8.30 PM, Sydney time.

http://www.earthhour.org/Homepage.aspx

Earth Hour involves turning off your lights for one hour (between 8.30 PM and 9.30 PM). It's a symbol of being willing to do something about climate change, or in my view it's more a symbol about willing to do something about power waste.

Whether or not you believe in climate change, we can probably all agree that most of us in the western world use far more resources than we actually need, and that our power consumption is more than we require.

As a symbol, therefore, please consider turning off your lights for an hour. It's a great excuse for using gorgeous candles, getting romantic, listening to music in the candlelight, talking with family or friends in the same room, etc.

I also believe it's a pointless gesture unless the television and computer stays off during that hour. Therefore, if you do turn off your lights, please do the same with other electricals.

It won't stop climate change, of course - and it won't stop continued misuse of natural resources - but it is a symbol of our willingness to try something, at least.

I ask you not to post anywhere on these forums during that 1 hour period, but please come back and start using your electricity again as soon as the hour is up; start posting about how much good you did!

if people were serious about the alleged man made climate change can I suggest rather then turning lights off for an hour they'd be better off spending the hour not breathing out

after all when everyone breaths out they are polluting the world with that nasty CARBON dioxide

Oh, BNWT... I have an idea for a story. It's all taking shape in my mind... A mysterious string of deaths in Melbourne and Sydney; a frustrated group of police not realising the deaths are linked until well into the piece; a maddened serial killer murdering people to save the earth (stop the CO2 exhalations) and wearing a Hug a Tree Today t-shirt...

If they were serious about it then include TV - fridge - cordless phones - bedside alarm clocks - computers - hot water service - VCR's - DVD players - remote video senders -
fish tank lights and aerators - heaters - air conditioners - evaporation coolers - public computer servers- coal mine production - combustion engines including two stroke engines -
I'm sure I've left out other appliances that I don't use .... therefore I will not participate in this action attempting to appease the the mislead masses that turning off the lights for an hour will make a scrape of difference to our planet ....

Well aren't I a good little vegemite,   :bgirlpanties: All my washing water is used to flush the toilet which in turn empties into a  septic tankwhich the overflows into a seepage drain which in turn is sucked up greedily by all my trees.
All unnecessary items switched off at plugs including computer, only fridge left running and clock :fridge:

The biggest thing we can do in this country is stop bushfires. It's the biggest factor in our 'evil Aussie CO2 pollution' by a factor of over 100,000. It's also why 'we' are one of the bigger CO2 'polluters' in the world despite being individual early adopters in so many CO2 reduction areas.

Are CO2 emissions from bushfires/wildfires still included in most analysis? i.e. not separating the actual man made vs 'country CO2 output. Been a while since I did any of this stuff.

It depends ernest....

If the bushfire is on Crown Land - it is NOT counted.

If it is on privately owned land - Then it IS.

Bushfires are a part of Australia. In fact we even have some flora that have developed a dependence on fire in order to propagate.

This whole CO2 debate seems to pale when Mother Nature plays a card...

Ubbs - even a warm Max is better than one without any CO2 in it. All the stories could be spin..... in could just be the governments plan to stop people enjoying Pepsi Max! What next... carbon free pluto pups? There goes the BBQ!

And this is why I am called MightyRoo...

I fixed the washing machine on Sunday!

No men within cooee...I just fixed it myself and saved at least $200 in service calls...or $600+ in buying a new washer.

Have you actually taken the lid off your machine and had a look?

I can't believe how simple they really are....any woman can fix one...as long as they work out how to get the panels off the top..lol

There are a few things like that, Roo.... Getting access can be the biggest problem - finding the culprit comes second and often the fix itself is easy.
