Alternate internet access...
« on: January 12, 2011, 08:05:10 PM »
I have just made a connection to the internet through my iPhone4 - because the Optus cable has a major fault on our node ... and will take 4-5 hours to fix apparently.

But I was tested.

I ended up browsing the web on my iPhone and finally came up with a site that mentioned one little detail that gave me a hint as to why I had problems. It gave the system requirements - and one of these gave me a facepalm moment...

... you need to have iTunes running.

NOWHERE in any of the tethering instructions, help, blogs and forums did anyone say you needed to have iTunes running.

I don't like iTunes because I generally don't use its facilities and it will sit there on my machine sucking up resources and taking action when IT feels like it. I turn it off - like some other services that I don't want cluttering up my machine.

Yes ... it would seem that there is some universal 'understanding' that if you have an iProduct - you will have iTunes running on every device you possess.

It would then seem I am, at heart, not one of the true believers.........

1In the beginning Apple created the Mac and the Mac OS. 2And the Mac OS was without command-line and more than one level of folders; and the foreknowledge of iTunes moved over the face of the OS. And the spirit of the Apple engineers moved upon the face of the code. 3And Apple said, Let there be a BSD code base: and there was a BSD code base. 4Apple saw the OS that would one day give birth to Snow Leopard, that it was good; and Apple divided the Mac OS X from the Classic OS. 5And Apple called the new stuff iPods and iPhones and iPads, and the other phones it called "not iPhones, pfffft". And the evening and the morning saw the first iTunes... and it was all good until that point.

Nay.

ON MY COMPUTER!!

You don't need the actual iTunes window open - just the insidious stuff running in the background.

The Apple Mac prayer ....

Our Steven, who art in Cupertino,
Hallowed be thy name,
The iPhone shall come,
Telstra's Plans have been done,
In Sydney as it is in our nation
Give us some data,
or a free hotspot
And forgive us our Blackberry purchases,
As we forgive you,
For the rare mistakes you make,
And lead us not into complex interfaces,
but deliver us from plastic buttons,
AMEN
