This is the first time I have seen this phenomenon ... The Aussie dollar is worth MORE than the US dollar on eBay.

Here is a cropped screen shot of 3 items I have on my watch list - as they appear right now:

(One wonders how far it will go - and how it will 'correct' in the future, as I expect it will.)

Its great for us - not so much for the US citizens. There economy is in real trouble with gdp and debt at nearly the same level.

I am with you Tello - I would not have elected him either - he is all style no substance.

He broke one promise - the closing of gitmo within 1 year - that he should not be forgiven for. Everyone knows its a sham - you charge them, you give them a fair trial and then you punish them.

I am also glad he cancelled his visit here - it would cost us too much money for a one term president, and it is just not worth it. If he was going to come over it should have been during the black saturday memorial - ffs he did not even send a representative - even though Hillary was in Indonesia at the time. That too me was a slap in a face, not the sort of thing you do to a country that has supported you.

Anyway Julia probably has an ipod already

And so is Tony - most politicians are. Wilson Tuckey though was certainly not slick. Hockey is not slick either - he comes across as a bully - and no one would ever want a bully for a Prime Minister.

But really. Obama was a law professor and an attorney - that should have worried everyone - cause lawyers have a way of making the truth look like the fairy tale, and they have a love affair with their own voice.

But it will be interesting to see what happens

It's great isn't Brums to watch the price of things drop for a change.

I've just made my first purchase using HopShopGo as the mail forwarder so I'll keep you updated as to what their service is like compared to MyUS. They sent me a bonus $15 shipping voucher and the shipping was only going to cost $20 so I thought I'd give them a go.

Paypal's exchange rate is not quiet at parity though. I just bought something for fly tying from a USA seller & got about.8919. Still, that's not bad though.

Yes, it seems PayPal don't give the same price when you purchase.

One of my recent purchases was for an item located in Hong Kong, but listed in French with a price in Euros. I set myself a target price and waited for the exchange rate to bring it under that price - as displayed on the eBay listing calculation. WHen I purchased and paid, the PayPal payment came through at a slightly worse rate, which put me 50 cents on the wrong side of my target. Still, it was only 50 cents (on a $30 purchase).

I cracked a wry smile, though, when the exchange rate improved over the next two weeks ... and I could have picked the item up for a whole dollar less.

I blamed Murphy for that. (Apologies to Tommy)

Paid for an item today, just now - and here's what Paypal offered:

PayPal exchange rate of 1 AUD = 0.989438 USD on 7 Nov 2010.

I checked the figures on the other items I mentioned in my OP, and they haven't changed.

Is it me, or does it seem rather peculiar that eBay uses more attractive rates than buyers will actually get when they buy using Paypal?

Even more especially because of eBay's OVERWHELMING insistence that Paypal is the only really safe way to pay for things.....

Countess. Re Reply #13. How do you use your card's exchange rate? My Visa debit card is registered with Paypal & when I pay for something the payment defaults to the Paypal Ex rates. Am I missin something?

Brum6y re above. It appears that way. What you see on Ebay is not what you pay if using Paypal & paying for something listed in overseas currency. Paypal ex rate is about 2% worse than the going rate at the time.

its really no different than if you go through a money exchange company they charge a small percentage for the transaction and their exchange rates are always slightly different to the official rate

Most Banks charge a commission on foreign exchange just like PayPal. It's a bit hard to compare on a Sunday but my creditcard (Westpac Visa) is currently using 0.9884 exchange rate (Friday 5/11 4.30pm). Not much different to PayPal.

OK Paypal ..... which is it?!!!

The online confirmation of payment (given earlier) was:
PayPal exchange rate of 1 AUD = 0.989438 USD on 7 Nov 2010.
The figure in my Paypal account is:
Exchange rate: 1 Australian Dollar = 0.989438 US Dollars
which are, as expected, the same ..........

BUT, the email confirmation gives me this:
Exchange rate: 1 AUD = 0.988429 USD

This is for the same payment.

How hard can it be?

Indeed, Smee, the difference is not huge, but the point is - they are DIFFERENT. Even $1 in $1,000,000 is a difference - and I do not see why there should be ANY difference.

I was working on a theory when I read that last post, Smee... and I think I have a theory that makes ~~cents~~ sense, of sorts:

The amount of the transaction involved was $5.98 USD.

Using the rate 0.989438, the AUD amount comes out at 6.04383499 and rounding this you would expect to be debited $6.04 - BUT Paypal debited me $6.05

Surprise, surprise - the exchange rate required for that calculation (to 8 decimals) is 0.98842975

Seems Paypal can't afford to lose even two fifths of a cent.

its not just paypal that do it Brumby ....gst is the same ...when collecting/charging gst you must round up , never down , or at least thats the way it was when I had to do the gst stuff it may have changed in recent years but I doubt it ...always had to be rounded up

well you have the answer now , its to have the correct rate for the rounded up transaction

just on the gst thing an example is if I sold something for $189 the gst @10% is $17.812 it would have to show as $17.19 .....as I say thats the way it was a few years ago so only assuming its still the same

I've had a couple of small value transactions through PayPal and through my credit card - and although the exchange rates from the card are always better than PayPal, there are the fees to add to the cost. PayPal roll it all together.

The difference (from my limited dealings) was not huge.
