Alibaba to pose real threat to eBay and Amazon

Just as eBay's MarketPlace is showing signs of a turnaround along comes Alibaba. Alibaba has already shown it can beat eBay at its own game, when its Taobao.com auction site handily beat eBay China in the Chinese market, capturing 70% or more of that marketplace. And Alibaba's Alipay is a worthy competitor to PayPal.

Chinese EBay Rival Aims for 1 Billion Global Users

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/171882/chinese_ebay_rival_aims_for_1_billion_global_users.html

(poster comment : Having read many comment sections attached to stories about ebay I have seen countless ebay sellers begging some company to come along and give ebay a kick in the head to wake the auction giant up so it will bring it's customer services up to a reasonable standard. For the last year I have been watching media reports where it is mentioned that Mr. Ma, the creator of Alibaba & Taobao, is looking to enter the US market. When Taobao started in China the then CEO of ebay, Meg Whitman, made the remark that the competition was "nipping at our heels" .... within a year the competition had pulled ebay to the ground and tore it's throat out. The next year could be very interesting.)

Not really media per se, apologies BNWT however it is something a lot of people are unaware of -

Store owners no longer get re-listing credits on their BIN listings.
Ebay forgot to mention this when they were telling us how much better the new fee structure is.

Under the new format, only auction listings will be eligible for the relist credit.
No fixed price listings will qualify regardless of whether or not someone has a store.

Cheers,
Allan
The eBay team

Seems they only decided to tell anyone when people started querying it, also some Ebay reps were saying it was a technical glitch prior to the above announcement on the PS board.
They said there would be cake....and there WAS!

This is simply the latest step by eBay CEO John Donahoe to eliminate the community culture of eBay.

Obviously, Donahoe did not like blogs. Once live, eBay has little control over what users contribute. As a result, eBay could not control, manage or spin user comments.

The comments submitted on blogs are ofen highly critical of eBay’s carefully crafted PR releases.

eBay would blog to promote their 5 free auction listings without mentioning higher final value fees associated with the promotion.

Users would assail eBay for offering a promotion that essentially amounts to a fee increase when the “free” listing feature was utilized.

As eBay would link to blogs, it became apparent that they were pointing internet users to information eBay did not want to necessarily see the light of day.

Since they can not control the message, they will simply kill off blogs.

Sadly eBay does not get the fact that their marketplaces best days were when they had a strong heightened sense of community.

When the community was active and blog comments heavily favored eBay they could not get enough, now, with public opinion turning against the company, eBay wants to take the ball and go home.

Now that the community has largely turned against what eBay has become, it makes sense that eBay will shut down yet another link to their past success.

John Donahoe does not want a thriving community, instead he wants a retail site that is sterile and wants the only communication about eBay to come from the propaganda ministers in eBay’s public relations department.

John Donahoe’s mission statement… ” eBay, we are not happy until YOU are not happy”.

Skype and eBay: Let’s call the whole thing off

In recent years, online shoppers have grown tired of bidding to snag deals, which can be time consuming, and have reverted to doing what they do offline: going for brands they trust and buying at a set price. Amazon, for instance, has fared much better in recent years. Add the effects of the recession and it comes as little surprise that eBay had a dismal holiday season and in January reported its first-ever quarterly revenue decline, of 7%.

This is said over and over again by eBay's spin artists. But repeating something over and over again does not make it true. The better performance of Amazon vs eBay is NOT due to Amazon not having auctions. eBay had best look closer to home - to how it treats its buyers and sellers - and to the draconian measures it takes against over its members without addressing the real problems of fraud and fraudulent IDs.

The best part about this is that this petition is organised by the same organisation that has banned its members from petitioning itself under threat of expulsion from said organsation.

The irony is delish  :applause:

LVMH Prevails In Paris Counterfeit Case Against EBay

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA said Friday a French tribunal found eBay Inc. responsible for counterfeiting on its Web site, the latest fight over when sites are responsible for counterfeit items being sold on their domains.

EBay was ordered to pay 80,000 euros ($117,864) and the tribunal said the company will be fined EUR1,000 per future infringement.

Crackdown on fake software

MICROSOFT has cracked down on Australians who sell counterfeit software on internet auction sites, and the investigations have resulted in settlements with 10 local sellers for copyright infringement.

Microsoft said the sellers were Jordan Andrews, who trades on eBay as "thebigcoos"; Nicholas Todd Courter, who trades on eBay as "hardpunter"; Rania Elbadar, who trades on Oztion as "bargain-buys4u"; Jack Koncewiczw, who trades on Oztion as "big-mucho" and "matt-coins"; Nessreen Omar, who traded on eBay as "amelia007"; Kelly Gilham, who traded as "Kellymgsheba"; Timothy Inman, who trades on eBay as "in.dvd" and "red.tech"; Matthew Stephen Anderson, who trades on eBay as "quickseller1982"; Nilesh Patel, who traded on eBay as "nileshapatel143"; and Norizan Mohamd, who trades on eBay as "unistore08".

Mr Thomas had filed a complaint and signed statement with the police, and the copy of Office had been taken as evidence.

He provided the case number, police station location and name of the investigating officer, and offered to provide a signed police statement, but PayPal would not accept that as proof.

Two weeks ago, PayPal said it would not reimburse any cost for the software.

However, days after PayPal was contacted by The Australian, Mr Thomas was told he would be fully reimbursed and paid an additional $50 for the inconvenience.

PayPal refused to respond to questions about whether the buyer guarantee was being used as a cover to allow counterfeit goods to be sold on eBay.

Ebay's payment service also would not comment on whether action had been taken against the eBay seller.

"In line with federal privacy laws PayPal Australia is unable to discuss individual cases," spokesperwoman Kelly Stevens said. "PayPal co-operates and works with all levels of law enforcement to stamp out illegal activity.

"In rare instances where our dealings or procedures result in a bad customer experience, we would like to apologise. For PayPal our No1 priority is the customer and we are always looking at ways to improve our customer service.

"This situation has now been rectified and I would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention."

Please spot the porkies.
