“eBay Australia seeks ACCC talks over unco-operative suppliers”

What galling hypocrites this eBafia mob are. They themselves would have to be the most anti-competitive entity on the planet, yet they have the hide to complain about suppliers not wanting to have their product sold on eBay’s clunky “online” mall.

The ACCC certainly should investigate this matter, but first the ACCC should have a good look at all the unscrupulous and/or anti-competitive activities of eBay and its most ugly adopted daughter, PreyPal.

Six Bite-Sized Innovation Lessons From Ebay's New Design Think Tank

http://www.fastcodesign.com/1664404/six-bite-sized-innovation-lessons-from-ebays-new-design-think-tank

These concepts are OLD - VERY OLD!.  I was doing this sort of thing in the 80's.  I mean, how obvious is it to get the people who are going to be using your deliverable involved in its design and production?!!  (Mind you, getting them to commit their time to it is another matter.)

There is ONE thing I will say in its favour - by getting an outside group to run it, more notice will be placed on following their guidelines ... and they may have some more efficient tools than I had back then.

BUT STILL - there is a glaring hole in eBay's Application Development.  The mechanism where one change is lost when a subsequent change is implemented is all too simple to explain.  It's called Version Management. The mechanics are very simple and have been an issue ever since modular programming (which was old hat in the 1970's) came to be.  Every IT department knows about it - and there has been some very elaborate packages around to manage it in larger installations.

This is just one of several indicators of poor IT structure and ....

EBay to Buy Mobile-Pay Service Zong for $240M

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-07/ebay-to-buy-mobile-payment-service-zong-for-240-million-in-cash.html

“Zong charges merchants more than PayPal for a comparable transaction. PayPal transactions carry a fixed fee of 30 cents in addition to 2 to 3 percent of the purchase. Merchants who use Zong receive between 70 and 92 percent of the purchase amount, said Brooke Hammerling, a Zong spokeswoman.”

What! Would you say that again please, I think I misheard it the first time …

EBay-Zong is the first salvo in World War of Payments [?]

http://venturebeat.com/2011/07/08/ebay-zong-is-the-first-salvo-in-world-war-of-payments-which-side-are-you-on/

I prefer Visa’s slant on the matter:

“On May 11, Visa announced our cross channel digital wallet which will be available later this year. Targeted for a global market, it will be regionally customized and will work for consumers at point-of-sale, online and with mobile purchases. It will work with Visa cards, as well as AmEx, Mastercard and Discover.

“Visa’s Head of Mobile Products, Bill Gajda, will explain all this (and more) at the MobileBeat conference next Wednesday.”

I look forward to next Wednesday. I doubt the “Ho” will attend this conference—he’s too busy buying new toys; maybe Scott Thompson will go along to confirm the bad news?

A couple more laughable puff pieces on eBay:

I'll resist the urge to editorialize on these laughable articles; but, be careful, don't aggravate your hernia repair by laughing too much.

“eBay Australia Raises Fees and Wants Fewer Auctions”

http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y11/m07/i26/s02

“… eBay said that future growth in ecommerce would come primarily from Fixed Price formats.”

How would these turkeys possibly know, seeing as how the eBay Marketplace has effectively made no progress in the past four years? And, if Donahoe is now publicly declaring that eBay wants to discourage professional sellers from using auctions it is only because he well knows that a great many of such professional sellers are corrupting their auctions with rampant shill bidding, about which eBay can not be bothered to do anything effective; and, if there is even a single brain being shared amongst all these turkeys, there has to be some fear that a government regulator, somewhere, may one day take a closer look at eBay’s effective criminal facilitation of such rampant wire fraud.

Union Man Sentenced To Prison For Stealing Internet Domain Name

TRENTON – A Union County man has been sentenced to prison for stealing a company’s Internet domain name and selling it over eBay for more than $110,000 to an unsuspecting buyer, Attorney General Paula T. Murdoch Merch Sales a Disappointment

Exhibit 1: The final edition of Murdoch’s News of the World, which published on the 10th. At press time, eBay had 32 copies for sale—and all of two bidders. The highest offer stood at $8.13; the other guy's best offer was $1.61. (C'mon guys, these papers were in mint condition!) Nearby, a genuine autographed photo of Murdoch was selling for $100 bucks. No takers. (eBay did not respond to a request for comment.)

Starting up a small business in an economic slowdown

Newsbeat has been to Greenock in the west of Scotland to see how one new business is dealing with the slow pace of the economy.
New figures show the British economy growing just 0.2% in the three months to June.
In 2007, Gillian Chalmers was working as an air stewardess flying out of Gatwick but now she sells vintage clothes on eBay and through a shop in Gourock.
The 24-year-old explains what it's like to start up a business in a slow, economic period.

Low-tech Internet scams harvest billions of dollars

...Individuals aren't the only ones to be targeted by scam artists.

E-tailers face the threat of so-called "re-shippers," who buy merchandise with stolen or fake credit card numbers, or reverse their PayPal or credit-card payments after they've received the goods...

“Amazon.com Announces Second Quarter Sales up 51% to $9.91 Billion”

http://blog.auctionbytes.com/cgi-bin/blog/blog.pl?/pl/2011/7/1311710878.html

Oh, dear me, ...

But don’t worry, PreyPal is coming to the rescue, Scotty and the Ho are going to give those greedy banks a run for their money at B&M POS.

Now, why on Earth would any B&M merchant want the clunky, unprofessional PreyPal at POS?

Frankly, the idea that PreyPal could ever hope to even minutely threaten the existing EFTPOS system or Visa/MasterCard at POS is simply ludicrous; particularly as PreyPal operates simply as a merchant-middleman parasite on those very systems.

What can one say about this latest naive pipe dream of Scotty’s and the Ho’s other than “beam me up, Scotty/John”.

eBay on defensive over link to bomb stash case

eBay spokesman Daniel Feiler says the website works closely with authorities to report suspicious activity.

"We do collect a lot of data about both our buyers and our sellers" he said.

Mr Feiler says the company reports all suspicious transactions to police.

“Struggling clothing company American Apparel Inc. is teaming up with eBay Inc. to create an online store within eBay's auction web site due to strong demand for its products there.”

“Struggling” / “strong demand”. Anyone notice anything ludicrously inconsistent with this statement which I presume has probably been ghost written by an eBay Dept of Spin staffer?
