Amazon up 84.5% Y/Y for January; eBay up 5.8%—another “good” month for eBay, so says Scott Wingo …

eBay/PayPal/Donahoe: Dead Men Walking.
“Today we’re dealing with phase two or phase three [he can’t even remember which one] of disruptive innovation. We’ve had the disruption, now we must disrupt our own disruption.”—John Donahoe (2007).

Just making a note that the posts which veered off into an important discussion about the GST threshold for various goods into Australia have been split into a separate topic.

Auctionbytes.com coverage of the eBay Analyst Day

I now really do understand how a headless turkey like John Donahoe can continue to display such confidence in his own very obvious lack of ability: clearly, he lacks the metacognitive ability to comprehend his own folly.

Have your barf bag ready.

eBay removes Harrier jump jet over weapons ban

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bradford-west-yorkshire-12429880

"It's a perfectly legitimate item to sell. It's not capable of 'delivering weapons', it's not even capable of delivering a pizza."

So this item is less dangerous than an automobile - but it looks scary.  Perhaps the only risk of it being classed as a weapon would be if it were dropped from the sky ..... perhaps on eBay HQ ..?

In 2010 alone, eBay has facilitated a total turnover of more than $120 million from the combined transactions of the site's top 2000 sellers and according to Sharkey, that year's top seller was able to generate sales of more than $12.6 million.

Ebay talking just Ebay profit or combined Ebay / Paypal profits ?...

I read it as the 120 million being the turnover of the top 2000 sellers .... nothing to do with profits

Don't blame the internet for bookshops going under

http://www.smh.com.au/business/dont-blame-the-internet-for-bookshops-going-under-20110218-1azgu.html

Now THIS is more like it.....

"The private equity owners of REDGroup Retail, Pacific Equity Partners, had a simple plan - bulk up its existing bookstore business with a fresh revenue stream in Borders, strip out costs from overlap then flog it to the public in a float."

"Private equity is facing a perfect storm: it bought high, it piled in cheap debt and now faces its day of reckoning as it exits its positions."

Ambitious plan. High risk. Got stung.

"That doesn't have much to do with the internet."

No, it doesn't.

Book chains' collapse brings retail nightmare closer

http://www.smh.com.au/business/book-chains-collapse-brings-retail-nightmare-closer-20110219-1b0bn.html

Sensationalist git.

While there are some truths buried in there, you will have to keep a sharp eye out for them ... and the language is hardly objective.

But this bit is just bizarre:

"As shopkeepers and shopping centre investors face a demanding period in the months ahead, Deborah Sharkey, the head of eBay Australia, addressed an online forum on Friday - her address was so enthusiastically attended they had to set up an overflow room in Sydney's Westin hotel."

The "Online Retail Forum" referred to at the Westin was not all about eBay. Here is the information panel that outlined the forum - which you would see on your way to the Webcast:

Duration    4 hours
Start Date    Friday 18 February 2011 at 9:30 AM (GMT +11 hours)
Presenter    Confirmed speakers include Senator Stephen Conroy (Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Digital Productivity), Senator Nick Sherry (Minister for Small Business), representatives from Australia Post, eBay Australia, PayPal, Grays Online and Temando.
Description   The Australian Government will host a half-day online retail forum on Friday 18 February 2011 in Sydney. The forum will bring together Australian retailers and other parts of the supply chain to discuss the opportunities and challenges that exist for Australian retailers in the digital economy.

Poor old Deborah Sharkey, didn't even get a mention by name.

As for her contribution in a 4 hour event ... well, here is an extract from the program showing the scheduled times:

10:55 am

Deb Sharkey, Managing Director, eBay Australia & New Zealand
Topic: eBay’s experience in Australia and what makes for success

11:15 am

Yep - 20 minutes ... including questions is all Deb was allocated. "her address was so enthusiastically attended they had to set up an overflow room" ...?

Oh, please.

SMH's Kirby probably lifted the paragraph about eBay's Sharkey from a press release direct from the eBay Dept of Spin. Journalists these days mostly aren't really journalists, they are mostly regurgitators of disingenuous press releases from unscrupulous commercial organizations such as eBay.
