Be careful about trusting nurses online
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:45:56 PM »
Quote
A British man allegedly addicted to watching others commit suicide on the internet is to be charged with encouraging and assisting suicide.

The UK's Daily Mail reports that William Francis Melchert-Dinkel posed online as a young woman and declared himself to be a nurse. He allegedly encouraged more than 100 people across the world to commit suicide.

It is believed he encouraged 18 year-old Canadian student, Nadia Kajouji to commit suicide.

She drowned in a river after chats with Mr Melchert-Dinkel. He advised her that his job as a nurse made him a specialist in the most effective ways to end her life.

According to the Daily Mail he advised her on the best lengths and widths of rope and said that he wanted to watch, via webcam, her hang herself.

Mr Melchert-Dinkel's medical records show that he had a "suicide fetish (and) offered medical advice for assisted suicide."

The “suicide voyeur”, based in Minnesota in the US, would scan suicide websites and give advice about suicide techniques to depressed people. He would tell users that he too planned to commit suicide simultaneously and they could watch each other die on their webcams.

He never intended to go through with his side of the pact, according to the Daily Mail.

Many of the people he encouraged to kill themselves were teenagers, according to reports.

The 46 year-old trained nurse is to be charged with various offences by the Minnesota police, according to the Daily Mail.

Please - encourage anyone who is suffering from depression or has suicidal thoughts to be extremely wary. Trust no nurses or doctors online; go to your doctor and see what he/she recommends. If you're prescribed medication, take it.

If someone is giving another person advice about committing suicide online - question their motives.

Don't forget; it might even be that someone describing him/herself as a nurse or doctor may not be telling the truth. It's easy for scammers or fraudsters or perverted individuals to claim they're anything to want to claim... because there is no way to check their credentials. Be cautious. Please warn others to be cautious.

* Readers seeking support and information about suicide prevention can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or SANE Helpline on 1800 18 SANE (7263).

I've been posing as a Drummer online for years, and there's no evidence to suggest that anyone commited to learning how to play drums.

BGP's are widely known as the most reliable method of online suicide, mere visual exposure to these fatal devices will render a person unconscious in seconds and dead in minutes, the ONLY known way to revive a victim is copious amounts of pepsi max provided intravenously, once revived a survivor can benefit from being fed by mouth a pluto pup generously dipped in tomato sauce.

Pluto Pups & Pepsi Max, who mentioned Pups & Max? I'll have two Pups & a can of Max, beautiful!

Pluto Pups, contain all life's essential needs & Pepsi Max, an elixir known to cure most, if not all, ailments.

At least you're not posting as Dr Ubbie and Nurse Gr8, deceiving the poor public...

It is very important for people online to realise that they ought not to use online advice from an invisible "expert" (who might not be an expert, or might have sick fancies or a personal agenda) as a substitute for a professional in a professional capacity. The professional in the professional capacity has a duty of care and is obliged to provide a certain level of expertise; an invisible online buddy claiming to be a nurse can't be trusted like that.

You are dead right Yib, Anthrax, Bubonic Plague, West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever, Elephantitiasis and of course, Ebola Virus.

The list is not exhaustive but it would take me ages to type the names of all the diseases Pepsi Max either prevents or, cures if you have already caught it.

Challenge:

Tello, lead these poor sinners into better ways. Show them how it's done with a serious and on-topic reply.

lol nah me either Ron i am the worst, lol but cant take world very seriously lately tello, and prolly should, it is a really bad thing depression, suspect that state of world in general and the pressures on young people are driving ever increasing numbers of them to consider this option, as well as peer group pressure, kids need to chill more and get out more and be shown the many wonderful things about this world, via sport, adventure and real things, i remember when i was young i was usually always too tired from training for sport to ponder the world much, but with a more online and cyber society kids are losing the ability to realise whats really out there in nature and exercise of all kinds

Cheer up!

Jack Kevorkian

Murad "Jack" Kevorkian (born May 26, 1928) is an American pathologist, right-to-die activist, painter, composer, and instrumentalist. He is most noted for publicly championing a terminal patient's right to die via physician-assisted suicide; he claims to have assisted at least 130 patients to that end. He famously said that "dying is not a crime".

Seriously.... being serious -

This is just another facet on the fantasies played out on the internet - and the anonymity it offers to facilitate them.

From the macabre to the modest; from the looney to the lame; from the homicidal to the harmless - they all must be questioned on their authenticity and their motivation - especially where negative influences are tendered.

For some it's friendly banter, tongue-in-cheek and a bit of fun.

For others, it is a means to achieve a level of importance, a sick game or to satiate an unnatural desire.

I am sure all members here would find the OP's story quite concerning.  I know I certainly was.

... and as much as I enjoy much of the light-hearted banter that flies around these boards, I just could not (at the risk of being called a 'wet blanket') bring myself to join in on this one.

The internet has answered much - but it also has much to answer for.

Thank you, Brumby - no Wet Blanket Award given by me, I promise.

Yes - perverted, sick fantasies online, facilitated by the anonymity and cloak of authority and string-pulling that the internet affords, are a growing concern.

People are tending to use their online time as "hidden time". No one in their "real life" is supposed to interfere or check on them, due to issues of privacy. The so-called friends they make online are never checked out by family, parents, friends, because of this secretiveness issue. Most people who are left with the devastating fallout of a family member getting too deeply involved in something online (leading to suicide or leading to a fatal meeting) haven't any idea of what's going on.

What is the answer? Perhaps doing away with the secrecy culture is a start, especially for teens. The old adage is true: if you'd be ashamed or worried about introducing an online friend to your parents or family or other friends, you need to ask yourself whether this is signalling a problem with that online friend.

I am proud to say I'd be pleased to introduce any of you to my family and other friends. No secrets there - in fact, I've often quoted hilarious things from here to my best friend (fellow singer).
