The name “Hershey” may be synonymous with sweets these days, but it took Milton Hershey years of trial, error, and failure to reach his confectionery fortune. At the age of 14, Hershey ditched school to apprentice with a confectioner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After four years, the entrepreneur had no interest in working for someone else, so he opened several candy shops across the country, only to have them all close. He finally struck the jackpot back in Lancaster when his fourth confectionery iteration, the Lancaster Caramel Company, finally took off. Hershey ended up selling the company for $1 million in 1900, leaving him free to pursue his newest sugary side hustle: chocolate.
