Online shopping continues to grow in Australia, with local consumers spending a total of $11.9 billion in online retail sales in the last year - an increase of around 22 per cent, year on year. In good news for local e-tailers, more than 70 per cent of these items are purchased through local online retailers .

This growth in demand for parcels has resulted in Australia Post operating at peak levels throughout the year, not just at traditional peak demand times such as Christmas.

"This year we will invest significantly to ensure we deal with the Christmas rush effectively. Last year we delivered more than three million parcels in December alone. This Christmas will be even busier," Mr Fahour said.

"We want to ensure that we are doing all we can to give Australia retailers and e-tailers the competitive edge this Christmas and we will work with them to help them meet their customers' expectations this holiday season."

This Christmas Australia Post will:

    Deliver parcels to households on weekends in November and December.
    Extend opening hours for parcel collections at retail outlets.
    Extend our retail trading hours at more than 450 retail outlets during the Christmas period.
    Extend our weekday operating hours for our call centres.
    Improve service levels for our business customers by extending our hours of processing and transporting.

I hope they schedule more frequent pickups from the outlets. Last Christmas the storage area at our Post Office was so full it was a tight squeeze each time they wanted to add another parcel. They should also do Saturday pickups. Our PO is open until 4.30pm to accept parcels but they are not collected until Monday. Aus Post do Sunday collections of the mail in red boxes so I can't see why they can't also do parcel collections.

Good News!

I've just taken some parcels to the PO and they already have heaps of bags full ready to leave on Monday.

I said to the staff that it was a pity that there were no parcel pickups on Saturdays and they said that there will be in the lead up to Christmas, starting in November! Pickup from our little local PO will be 12noon on Saturdays so at least we'll be able to lodge all of the Friday night and Sat morning sales. If you get parcels ready for shipment over the weekend it may be worth checking out your PO.

Talking of Aust Post
I just got a stock delivery ,
The box dimensions are
105cm long
35 cm wide
45cm high

Now if I key these figures into the ap calculator it tels meit exceeds the allowable girth of 140 cm
Which I already knew , but tat is the sizes and it wasdelivered by AP
Clearly they have flexible rules for some ?

I get 42kg cubic based on those sizes ...

... and while I get on quite well with my local Post Office staff, if I'd try putting something like that through - well, you know what would happen.



There must be something magic available for eParcel users.

Yep , they had even taped two boxes together to make it that size

The contents of the cartons weigh 930g each plus the weight of the carboard cartons
So  2 kg -3kg in total I would think

Ok .... then I'm at a loss - unless they 'cubed' to 6kg so that it would be clear it wasn't just being sent by actual weight.  Forget the fact that it was still way short on the true cubic weight.

Nope .... walking away from that one.

Heres another from the same supplier ... they charged me $77 postage
Look at the size ofit 71 cm  long x 53 wide by 47 high not cubed just 8 .4 kg





Dont know how they get away with it with Aust Post ... But lucky bastards !!!!

Todays carton





Look at the dimensions ... So I decided to check with Austpost if the rules had changed , eventually I got onto an account manager and discovered that for certain eparcel account holders the size restrictions had been abolished , ason being is that ifyou have enough volume to have a pick up and you are based in a certain area itsok because the size rule was only ever put there as a union restriction for Aust post staff , nowadays under certain circumstances such as a contractor picking it up , it never ever gets handled by an actual Australia post employee ... All parcel pick ups , sorting , distribution , and delivery etc is handled by a contactor not AP staff ..
I then threw him a curve ball and said what if no- one is there to receive and the  contractor has to leave a card and takethe item to the closet Post office ... This had him stuttering and stammering for an answer ... But the bottom line is , if you have big enough account you can send what you like size wise ...dead weight restrictions of some sort still apply but he wouldnt go into details as by now i had confessed that I wasnt looking to open an account of suchmagnitude ... But i did squeezesome valuable info out of him first

I see the place is in Lidcombe and the parcel was sent from Regents Park (which is next door).

Depending where they are in that area, they're only a 15-20 minute drive from me.

I'm trying a courier company for the first time today. It is a non eBay sale to a previous customer and he was willing to be a guinea pig for a trial run.

It has cost me $6.75 for a parcel to go to another Melb suburb. If I'd booked earlier it may have been same-day delivery but they are picking up at 4.30pm so it should be delivered tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

He will scan it as thats how they get paid , if he doesnt scan it doesnt count as a pick up to him
