MODERATION AND WORD FILTERS
« on: June 06, 2009, 01:03:30 PM »
I HAVE TO SHARE A FUNNY STORY

today i was talking to my mum in nz, my little nephew craig is a dark horse, 8 years old and a character.

he goes on club penguin and love sit, his big brother rarely gets a look in.

anyway... mum noticed he wasnt on if for a day which was unusual but thought nothing of it, he was reading a lot more than normal and drawing.

at 8.50 am today nz time he asked nanny "what time is it nanny" the time was confirmed and he replied "oh good my 24 hours is up in ten minutes I can go back on club penguin"
she was surprised and queried why he had not been able to, it turned out he was banned for 24 hours and explained that a young poster kid there has been somehow posting swear words and
craig had replied and called him a "twit" at least that's what he says he typed but the word filter (prolly) turned it into "tit" and he got binned

They're even socialising the young to conform to political correctness and in so doing... curtail free speech !!  LOL  1984 meets 'Equilibrium'.....can you imagine being a kid in a school playground and saying you're a twit.....and a little bot sounding an alarm as it speeds towards you with a 'gag' slip for 24 hours?  Please...what next?

It's a bit like demolition man...every time the kid says twit, an alarm sounds and a profanity infringement is issued. lol...Murder, Death, Kill, starting with freedom of speech and working it's way outward.

The 21st Century is bizarre.

I don't know Cupie, my Mum always told us that we would have a greater vocabulary if we learned words that could be used instead of the usual profanities. Her wise words always come to me when I come across someone who swears every second word - they really do have a limited vocabulary!  :D

I read an article the other day and have filed it away just waiting for the right opportunity to use one of the words!  ;D

Messages on Twitter are called 'tweets', not twits, or so my kids keep correcting me!   ;D

A twit is a pregnant Gold Fish.

Club Penguin is a very good place for young kids to play, it's safe and the mods are very vigilant, there is a parent area to check on your kid too. I can email the mods anytime and get a clear and professional responce in good time. I like it :)

I agree wheels, and lets face it the 'F' word seems to be part of every sentence for some people....Ok when you're really really angry and either confiding in a friend or in private, but as everyday speech? .

But since when was twit or tit a profanity?...lol. You can go and 'Twitter' these days, and the real definition of 'twitting' is:  "To taunt, ridicule, or tease, especially for embarrassing mistakes or faults".     Language is changing, and apparently 'twitting' is now acceptable...lol

I'd correct a child for saying other words, but not twit.  As a noun it refers to a foolish person???....so what's profane about that?  Tit refers to soft fleshy milk-secreting glandular organs on the chest of a woman...isn't this all part of life?...lol...back to the breast feeding in public debate next no doubt...LMAO.

well nanny then had to explain what a "tit" was and hes not the sort of kid you sugar coat things for (otherwise he keeps asking questions elsewhere) so she gave him the run down so he is much better informed now after the incident...

hes the one who did a picture on a school family chart and drew images of all those in his family INCLUDING a neighbour, he took it upon himself to state a few things underneath each drawing by way of captions, for grandad he put "DECEASED" (he was just 6 when he did this chart) and under the old neighbours drawing or portrait he put "NEARLY DECEASED"

that neighbour actually passed away last week which confirmed the prophecy of a six year old, we get a laugh at least once every week out of that child, when he went to the new zealand parliament buildings in wellington he was sure abraham lincoln ran the place and would be there...

Actually Imp I searched for a reference to the term of twit being a pregnant goldfish cause that's how I grew up understanding it, along with the other meaning of being a 'foolish person'......but I couldn't find one.....so if it's true...where is it written.....as they say...??.  I wanted to prove or disprove whether that was true or a figment of childhood.

gr8...you're nephew sounds like a laugh a minute, but why didn't they explain it to a 10 year old?  what a twit and tit was?...here we are saying it without moderation..lol.....surely there should be some type of explanation?..isn't that what we demanded on Feeblebay forums?  Maybe an email to the parents so they can laugh themselves silly over the ridiculousness of being moderated for saying 'twit'?.

I know a 16 y.o. female - daughter of a close friend - whom I regularly challenge to express her emotions using words other than the profanities.

She frequently objects "Well, I'm P****D OFF"

And I simply say to her "I'm not stopping you from being p****d off - it's just that there are other words you can use to express it."

From my own casual notes - she is improving. Should have it under control by the time she's 38 - but I'm not putting any money on it.

cupie it definitely is a pregnant goldfish as imp says she reminded me when she said it but this is funny a debate thereof

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2385/is-a-pregnant-goldfish-called-a-twit

i think maybe he actually typed "tit" rather than twit but he swears he didnt, i will investigate further, hes such a dark horse, he said he didn't tell mummy as nanny suggested because she was busy enough and he didn't want to worry her, but he probably just thought he would get into trouble more likely

this is a funny excerpt from that thread; appears perhaps its an aussie thing to call pregnant goldfish "twits" and we were taught it in our schools (i was in enzed or godzone at the time lol)

"Now the Australian Going Places magazine claims rather that 'a pregnant goldfish is called a twit.' It has also been suggested that this is a mistaken definition of twat. Confirmation of any of these, please."

I rolled my eyes but dutifully looked up twirp (and twerp) in the OED. No mention of fish, gold or not.

Pursuing the Australia angle, Jill E-mailed a fisheries expert down under, who replied, "I am perhaps not the best to ask about Australian slang (I'm a New Zealander, and for us twit and twerp are names for stupid people). However, I asked my colleagues and it seems that in Australia twit is indeed a name for a pregnant goldfish, as well as having the more normal meaning."

A solid lead or another dead end? Jill knew what to do. She posted a query on a message board run by Australian disciples of the Straight Dope. (They call themselves "the Teeming Handful"--check them out at http://pub31.ezboard.com/bgdope.) The response: (a) "It's definitely an Aussie [urban legend] that twit stands for a pregnant goldfish. It was one of those 'facts' we all knew at school." (b) It's not in the Macquarie Book of Slang, the definitive work on Australian colloquial speech, or in any other available book of Australian slang. (c) "I've asked my friends who are vets, and it's not a term used by either them or by fish breeders."

So there you have it. You can bullshit the experts all you want. But the Teeming Millions know.

but a Tit is a samll bird, a species of bird in the Aegithalidae family.. ie: Crested Tit-warbler, among others..

But CP is very strict on what those kids write and I'm happy about that!!

G8, my little darling got booted for 24 hrs for posting a link how to find a secret person or something..lol..

yes they are a lot of fun, same nephew has told nanny not to watch coronation street, her fave program, because "its too violent" and insists on reading her every word from the detailed comics he creates during each episode, she has learned to watch the program and listen at the same time (proving we are an evolving species), yes i think the onyl reall way to find out is through the mods in his case too, so funny kids are what they come out with

my son when asked did he enjoy his dinner at 5 years old said "yes dad it was malicious!"

Blame the All-Bran ad for that one!!  But it'll have to be explained to the 5 y.o. so they understand the humourous element.  If not, they could open themselves up to ridicule by incorrect usage. (I had one experience when I was in primary school - and I can still clearly remember the ridicule I copped to this day.)
