🤔"FUN FACT",🤬 I hardly think so. Here is how BBMWD,(Big Bear Municipal Water District), addressed the "Toxic Algae Bloom" occurring in your lake on Aug 18th...
BBMWD POSTED:
Fun fact of the day! Cyanobacteria are among the first microorganisms to have inhabited the earth. It is responsible for the earths transition from a carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere to the present relatively oxygen-rich atmosphere as a result of oxygenic photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria plays a very important role in a water body but is a very complicated subject.
This being said, the District would like to make the public aware of a potentially harmful algal bloom. The Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board recently sampled water from select locations around the Lake (as they do monthly) and found high levels of algae that could potentially be toxic. Blooms with the potential to be toxic are referred to as harmful algal blooms (HABs). Some HABs can produce toxins. As a result, they recommended a lake wide warning be placed on Big Bear Lake. Additionally, a danger advisory was placed off of Stanfield Cutoff. The low water levels and warmth of the water off of Stanfield Cutoff make it an optimal location for Cyanobacteria to thrive. The District does not recommend the public or their pets to swim in the Lake at this time. Pets are most susceptible to seeing ill effects due to Cyanobacteria. This is due to dogs ingesting the water and licking themselves off after being in the water. Cyanobacteria is constantly moving, sinking, rising, and thriving and certain water conditions lead to a bloom as the one you are seeing now. This makes it hard to pinpoint where a potentially harmful bloom will be on each given day so for the time being it is best to assume these conditions are currently lake wide. A danger advisory and sign has been posted on the east side of the lake and a warning sign and advisory has been posted mid lake for the west side of the Lake. The lake remains open for boating & fishing. You may refer to mywaterquality.ca.gov for an interactive map for the results of the most recent testing. The District would like to note, that on mywaterquality.ca.gov there is a disclaimer stating “The exact location, extent, and toxicity of the reported bloom may not be accurate and may not be affecting the entire waterbody.”
The District will be sure to keep you updated on the situation as we continue on with the rest of the 2022 boating season. When in doubt, stay out.

I want to know how this will affect our wildlife.

Rynn Nichols it can harm animals very quickly, often times within an hour of exposure,(dogs and livestock are most common). There is no antidote for toxic algae poisoning.
Rynn Nichols
Dee Levey What about our Bald Eagles eating the fish, or all the other animals from squirrels to bears needing a water source.

Rynn Nichols the toxic algae blooms have the potential to harm fish as well as other wildlife
Patty Kelly Hafen
I would think the wildlife have been dealing with this for eons. The algae is part of the ecosystem just like the wildlife is.
Brenda Dominguez
Patty Kelly Hafen algae is one thing this is toxic algae completely different and it's gotten worse every year it's called global warming and it's going to get worse. Maybe if everybody up here could set a big bowl of water out for the critters!!!! Maybe we can help a little bit of our wildlife..🐿?🐰🦝🦎🦌🐇🐀🐦🐍

Jey Allen Big Bear is no longer the wonderful community it once was. It's heart breaking to say the least, but sadly this us what happens when greed takes center stage and communities become divided. When every one thinks "they" and only they, have all the answers.
Perfect example of too many chiefs and not enough indians.
The damage is done, and will only get worse🥺
Another business is closing this month😪this sadly will continue. So many folks have moved away.
When all is said and done, there will be very little left. The saddest part is this could have all been avoided🥺

I remember in the 80's, the Gov. called Atomic Radiation "SUNSHINE UNITS". They so hope I stay stupid. Sry to disappoint.

They forgot to mention, Not to eat any fish, caught on our Lake, for now, also.🤨

Drain the swamp , start over

In the past, the MWD would give out laminated posters for the marinas to display in an obvious location, and we did that. We also tell our customers when the algae is dangerous that they shouldn't let their pets in the water. Boating is fine, because customers cannot swim off the boats. Jet skis are okay, as long as the customers don't tip themselves off getting water in their eyes, mouth, etc. Amazingly some of the customers we'd tell, you would see them wading out in the lake with their dogs.

Was at Boulder bay park today no signs around water
Bill Harvey
Wendy Clouser the shallow warm water is a perfect breeding place, stay out and don't fish in that water. Also if the ducks and insects are abundant in the park grass, go back to the car and look for a picnic place up on the mountain along 2n10.

I haven't put my kayaks In all year.
Bill Harvey
Wendy Clouser doesn't mean you can't put them in during the months of April, May, June, and maybe much of July. After that the water warms enough for these blooms to develop.
