I asked my Handyman to help me set up and mildly tweek my Circle Shear for cutting the busted edges off 50 salvagable cymbals that I bot offa ebay 3 years ago.
Cheap.
(The Shear, from ebay too, cost $1200, delivered, cheap!)

Shipping, as usual, was Murder. Still a wise investment, unless every Drummer on Earth has suddenly dropped dead. (That would make me an unemployed Drum Roadie...)

Or kicked out the band.

He asked me why I need his help.

"Because 1 1/2 brains are better than mine".

A man got up in one of those dinky little pubs where people can take the stage and perform a stand-up comic routine. This particular fellow was extremely spaced out, articulated very unclearly and began a rambling joke.

The weird thing is that the joke had the potential to be quite funny.

However, this poor man exhibited no sense of how to tell a good joke; how to work up to it, how to give it flavour and texture, how to build up to release the punchline to everyone's amusement. No - the man told the joke (and kept getting lost in it) in a loud but senseless muttering style. When he finally reached the punchline, it fell flat like fizzed-out soft drink.

One of the crowd, a bald-headed executive type of bloke, turned to the man's mate, seated at a table near the front. "You'd better tell your friend not to give up his day job," he said.

The friend grimaced. "Yeah, he's a great bloke, but he's got no sense of timing."

The bald-headed bloke said curiously, "What IS his day job?"

The friend looked surprised. "I told you already."

"You did not."

"Yes, I did," insisted the friend. "He's a drummer. I TOLD you he has no sense of timing!"

Montello Real Estate. Or, The Bad Lands of Nevada.

I am considering selling my 10 acres out here. I emailed the guy (an eBay seller) who sold it to me 4 years ago, for $8K. Here is his reply:

Ron, good morning and sorry for the delay in getting back with you.

I will get right to the point. As you know the economy is very bad. This has had an incredible and rippling effect on just about everything. Land sales included!

Before things got bad there were typically 2,300-2,500 pieces of raw land listed on ebay at any given time. I don't mean Nevada but all states combined. Nevada typically had 80-100 parcels on ebay at any given time. The last few months ebay has had 1,000-1,200 parcels being auctioned at any given time and Nevada has been having 35-40 auction parcels running at any given time. (I think there are 40 going right now and 1/8 of them are my listings.)

Not much is selling and when a parcel does sell it typically sells for 40%-50% less than it did one year ago and it usually takes 2-4 listing attempts to get a parcel sold. Ebay fees are higher than ever before and sales prices and as low as I have ever seen them. Plus with the high ebay fees the combination is brutal. It is a total buyers market and it is very scary. I have almost entirely quit buying land.

I used to get 10-12 feedbacks each month and now I get 3-4. My sales are down 60-70% and the prices are down as well by 50% or more.

I used to have 1-2 people in an entire year write me and ask about buying their land back. Now I have 2-3 people write me each month. Some of these people purchased 2-4 years ago when prices were at an all time high and some are people that have purchased in the last 3-12 months. The people that purchased land over a year ago often paid 10-12K for a 20 acre parcel and 6-9K for 10 acres. Most have either lost their job or had their hours cut. I hate even making them an offer as I know what they paid and I know what the market currently holds. My offer would be insulting but I cannot afford to buy high and sell low. It simply does not make sense. I am truly in a tough position but have no control of the economy and must do what is best for me.

I would be willing to buy your land back but the most I can safely offer is $2,000.00 I know this is a low offer but you purchased when the economy was really strong and prices were high.

Here is a recent 10 acre parcel in your area another guy recently sold for 2K

NORTHERN NEVADA LAND 10 ACRES ELKO COUNTY NO RESERVE
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160350935852&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Here is a 20 acre parcel I sold for $4,600.00 that is a great parcel. Just 2 hours from Reno, close to power and just off HWY 400. 2 years ago it would have sold for 3 times that amount:

20 ACRE NEVADA RANCH POWER! PAVED ROAD! INCREDIBLE VIEW
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150356197721&ssPageName=ADME:L:EOISSA:US:1123

Keep in mind there are ebay fees, paypal fees, taxes, mailing, recording fees, escrow fees and transfer taxes. Plus the time involved. If an item does not sell the first attempt I incur another $100 listing fee. I use a fancier listing format. I could list for $70 per listing but I find the fancier listings are more effective. When an item does sell ebay charges another fee of $35 which they call a final value fee?

At $2,000 I am guessing when the smoke cleared I might sell your parcel for $3,000  I can sell for higher prices if I sell on land contract but I need to sell some parcels for cash of I have not liquid funds.

If you have interest in my offer let me know. I could make this happen quickly.

Ron, thanks so very much and please try and understand my position. Part of the reason for my delay is I truly hate even writing back and making such a low offer.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Jeff

Tello, a man once said, "Never sell when someone's convincing you to accept his low offer." It might be a realistic offer in this economic climate, but realistic and fair are two different animals.
