eBay to close Burnaby facility; about 700 jobs lost

"We are working aggressively to deliver a better customer experience for eBay buyers and sellers," Chad O'Meara, vice president, Customer Service, eBay Marketplaces, said in a news release. "While it is a difficult decision to close our Vancouver facility, we believe that consolidating our North America customer service operations will help accelerate our efforts to continually exceed buyer and seller expectations."

eBay and PayPal Update User Agreements

http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y09/m05/i05/s03

bnwt....is there any indication that this is being implemented in Australia?  If so, it is very interesting indeed.....National Consumer Protection laws have tightened around online User Agreements and soon all States in Australia will have Unfair Consumer Contract laws.

Also, the level of fraud uncovered last year, and the failure of ebay to verify its sellers, or mitigate fraud in any obvious way....may have also had something to do with these changes, if they apply to Australia.  Police reports of online fraud originating from auctions sites like Ebay and the like, would have increased dramatically since going national in 2007.  The law usually looks at causal factors and in my view, it comes back to anonymity of sellers, and ebay's refusal to protect consumers from them.   If they are dodgy, they shouldn't be selling....end of story.

Ebay are taxing a lot of resources in this country with their conduct, and I for one, believe that they need to clean up their act and provide dispute resolution, customer service and insurance for buyers using other payment methods....at the end of the day, the fraud originates from dodgy sellers, not the payment method....if they won't verify sellers, then they should provide protection for buyers using payment methods other than Paypal......

Have they finally listened to consumers?  Or is Australia left out of any changes that might install trust and safety back into the buying/selling relationship?  At the moment, anyone using B/deposit on Ebay is a sitting duck, because ebay don't protect consumers equally.

Any wonder many have chosen not to purchase on ebay anymore?.....I know I've stopped buying altogether...won't join paypal, won't be told I have to.  They are unsafe in my view...read their UA....can't wait to see the new one and whether it still reverses all liability back onto consumers, in total contradiction to the principles of the EFT code....and what was it they said?  Paypal is equal to or better than the EFT Code?  huh?

eBay Australia Selling Inconvenient Music Downloads

Given all those extra hoops and the less-than-comprehensive selection, I can’t imagine why anyone would bother.

I have downloaded some music, but in general it's a pointless exercise for me because:

a) I like having the whole album (a full opera, a full recital, etc.) and downloading albums is often not significantly cheaper than buying the album;
b) I like OWNING a real, legitimate CD. I can store it, admire the glossy CD brochure, read through the information (libretto, essays, etc.), download the CD to my iPod if I desire, play it on any medium I wish, and it's MINE;
c) I like owning the hard media rather than simply an audio file. Less risk of something going wrong and having to purchase it again for download. Okay, admittedly on SOME download sites, you can re-download the same tracks you've purchased as many times as you want... but what happens if the rights for that album as a download are suddenly removed? There you are, stuck...;
d) Many albums are not able to be downloaded in Australia - the rights limit download to the US or UK;
e) The range for classical music as downloads is incredibly stunted in comparison to what's available for pop and rock and virtually any other genre;
f) Australian internet speed is pathetic in comparison to most of the rest of the world. Downloading albums for us is significantly slower than it is for other countries. Europe in particular mocks our snail-like internet speed!

I only download albums if I can't buy them (out of print, unavailable, no other way) - or need them in a super-hurry and can't obtain the CD locally from a music shop. If it's not urgent, I simply order from one of several online sources.

Reading the comments on the bottom of the bonanzle report was interesting - it seems forums have problems, no matter where they are!

The little 'punch the air' post a while back in this thread wasn't in reference to any particular media report, by the way (although all bnwt's posts are air-punch-worthy  :10: ).

I was air-punching in happiness at Bnwt's arrival here in OZ RT  :yess:
