Oyez, oyez - it's Australia Day!
Between 8 and 9 pm AEDST (Melbourne time), we'd love to see this thread and place humming with activity.
Many of us will of course have activities during the day (I'm about to head off for a picnic), but if you can pop in and enjoy this thread and any other thread here in the interim, it would be fantastic.
The meaning of Australia Day
On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.
Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.
Though 26 January marks this specific event, today Australia Day celebrations reflect contemporary Australia: our diverse society and landscape, our remarkable achievements and our bright future. It also is an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, and to consider how we can make Australia an even better place in future.
At its core, Australia Day is a day driven by communities, and the celebrations held in each town, suburb or city – unified by the celebration of what’s great about Australia and being Australian – are the foundation of its ongoing success.
We are a community here, so let us celebrate the aspects of Australia and our community that give us our appreciation and support for each other, for the wider community, for the world.

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY EVERYONE!!!!!!
Had a lovely day today......and tried out my new Slow Cooker.

Absolutely perfect weather in Melbourne! Wouldn't want to live anywhere else..*sigh
-
i'm here - with a cold beer in my hand.
happy australia day to all
;D
-
hope everyone has a great day...
-
That's some bow you have there Ubbie to be able to shoot arrows into the sun hey maybe that's is what is causing the global rise in temperature ;D
-
hope everyone has a great day...
hey there tommy me luv...almost missed ya in the rush....you do look the part for an Aussie day celebration....
-
enjoy yourselves..dont get to drunk..
-
Salad? I don't eat salad, terrible stuff. I had Chicken Schnitzel & potato gems for tea, beautiful. Potato gems come from potatoes which are a vegetable so I guess I do eat veges.
Yeah Poddy I shoot top range bows but the heat & humidity gets to me, doesn't bother the bows much. With heat & humidity rising arrows (shot at longer distances) tend to hit higher in the target so I aim a bit lower to compensate.
-
I'm so drunk...................
-
(http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r271/rontello/IMG_0566.jpg)
Splut again!
-
:duckling:
-
I hope everyone had a nice day and didn't over indulge.
I see one has admitted to an excess of beverage, never mind Tello just wait until you get over here and taste some REAL beer instead of the 2% 'maiden's water' that they mistakenly call beer over there.
-
:duckling: Helloo to all. Happy Aussie day....
-
mmmmmmm - so where is everybody. have you all gone to the fireworks / or watchingthe cricket ??
-
Fireworks have just started over here.
Might wander out to the front verandah and see what I can see.
The dog has gone for cover.
-
we're around..some are suffering the effects of real life...so wyze.....where are all the coinees then huh?...lol..ya can't rely on tello for the standard entertainment..he's already indicated that he's drunk...lol
-
Yeah, from maiden's water............
-
I had a most beautiful day, the food was great, the company was terrific, and the atmosphere was light and festive.
It was slightly spoiled by having car trouble on the way back, but I cheered up when the RACV guy fixed the problem within five minutes after having a 40 minute wait.
Happy Australia Day, everyone!
-
I'm here. I gave up the TV to Commander In Chief to be on the computer. Anyone know the cricket score?
-
Sorry i am late, could never understand Melbourne time LOL
Should say sorry 3 times i got 3 invites
-
Is it very hot down your way Countess?
-
Hi tess...I think it helps if you motivate the vehicle with a few choice expletives...may not get it started but it gets rid of a lot of pent up stress...lmao...
-
I'm amalgamating this into the Australia Day thread to avoid confusion.
Again, Happy Australia Day, all!
-
gord...grab hold..the furniture is about to be rearranged....lol
-
It's actually been a GORGEOUS day, Ubbie. As Roo said, beautiful weather. I don't think it could have been bettered.
-
Oh my goodness, it's been a long while since you were here, Pleb. Welcome back.
-
Dang, am I too late? Only just read the email.
But anyhoo, will push in regardless.
Happy 'Straya day, everyone! :-*

Raining like a bu***r where I am - frogs are loving it (shagging their little hearts out they are).
Oooh, b ugger is a beep word?
-
Typical Aussie word and it gets the BEEP..................BUGGA ;D
-
hey admin...it's just...just...just....un Australian...bugga !!!
-
Spell it as the real Australians spell it, then! *wicked grin* It ends in "a".
We're just avoiding the activity, not the noun...
-
Hey guys.......look what I got!

ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
-
Hey guys.......look what I got!

Hi Cent how ya bin ?....
-
Hello to the lovely Lady Rose. I take it that it was a hot Australia Day up there?
Centuries, what a gorgeous new avatar! It's exactly my style (as certain people here know all too well).
... Wonderful photos, Roo. I saw them in the night sky, but didn't think about photographing them.)
Hello, Yibida - I know you've been busy, but did you have time to enjoy today as a day of rest?
-
Yes Tess I had a great day thank you... I wish it ran over 3 or 4 days.. one day is too short...LOL
-
And hello, Robbie - your avatar is particularly suitable for today.
Hello, Tello - we can write a song with those lyrics. And I could do with some snow here... I know it's actually quite nice outside, but INSIDE it's a bit warm at the moment.
Hello, M@ggie - the "a" spelling is at least an alternative, although it isn't in the dictionary. *rueful shrug*
Cupie, did you enjoy your Australia Day? BBQ, picnic, game of cricket...?
-
Tried to post pic but says uploader file to full, you guys have broken it LOL

Perhaps the file size is too large, Rose?
-
Hi there Rosie :)
did you have a great Australia Day?
Mine was very quiet , me being in the backwoods :) but I guess i like it like that, me and my low profile
-
Lil Roo has the makings of a shutterbug :), the pics came out pretty well
-
At the risk of raining on yer parade, I researched the history of this holiday.
The Natives are not happy about it.
Oh well: Majority Rules. It's the same wherever ya go.....
:arr:
-
that's why I made a point of posting the three flags earlier today!
we are all rebuilding
the culture
the identity
the reclaiming of lost or stolen generations
and it's happening!

Better than America's smug attitude about its sordid past.
Those "History Revisionists" are a sorry lot.
Long Live Geronimo!
-
You are so right Tello.
If more people were aware of what they are celebrating at Thanksgiving I think they would lose their apatite on that day :(
And we too have a few skeletons in our cupboard.
The Canadians too and i guess all nations :(
-
Hi poddy, quiet day here getting ready to go to NZ next week, cant wait will be cooler over the ditch
-
Rosie watch out for those vicious amorous sheep over there, they sneek up on you when you are not looking :0
-
Put the gumboots away, Poddy.

Afternoon all.
:kisshug: = Centuries
I'd like to add my contribution to the discussion on sheep. I had a lovely lamb roast a couple of days ago. Delicious it was.
-
... with mint sauce.

No mint sauce nice Horsey. Just gravy and potatoes (usual and sweet ones), carrots, pumpkins, peas, broccoli, cauliflower .....
(Sorry Ubbie, don't mean to make you sick)

-
Hi there gr8, :salute: :salute: :salute: it is good to have the time to be tapping at the keys again. I had a moment of panic when I opened my laptop. Felt so strange. Took several deep breathes and a couple of short black coffees to regain both my composure and my two finger typing skills. Well, my composure ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
fluffy, hello to you. :) :) :) I, too, enjoy eating lamb roasted.I especially like lamb if it is cooked with garlic and rosemary, and not overcooked. Yum!
-
I watched an episode of Time Team recently, which involved searching for further parts of the best-preserved Roman town in Britain (I can't recall the name of the town, but it's in Wales).
The team found further shops, including what was probably a butcher's shop, and the comment was made that many Romans in Britain were complaining at the time about cheating meat-sellers who tried to pass off old mutton as young tender lamb. It was rather funny when old sheep bones were lifted from the dirt in the Roman layer of that shop...
-
They still do it to this very day Countessa!
-
'tried to pass off old mutton as young tender lamb'.
I also see a lot of that happening at the local clubs as well .........
-
Know what you mean Robbie....
Some years ago I was at a sports club with some workmates and a conversation was struck up with a lady by a couple of friends next to me. I don't know how it got to there, but next thing I know, she turned to me and asked how old I thought she was.
I put her at 37 - but I said 32. I got a smile for my troubles and she announced that she was 37.
Having a sharp eye is good, but having a sharp mind is safer...
-
why do people (esp women) ask you to guess their age?
it's weird but they do
looking for compliments i suppose
i met a young bloke who was with a group when I was out a couple of years ago
everytime i went over to the smoking area he appeared (nice looking bloke, well spoken, groomed etc)
it finally dawned on me that he was keen
so i says - how old are ya possum? (thinking that the word 'possum' might be an age giveaway for me!) - answer 26 yrs /tradesman /single / not pis sed / not blind
naturally i didn't tell him my age but i warned him that i had a daughter the same age - didn't put him off
no matter - he likes the older woman and all his friends kept telling me that he genuinely thought i was smouldering hot (felt like Demi!)
anyways it got a bit painful so i pointed out the hubby who was in the 'pure' non smoking area
left me alone then
it did make me realise that even us older gals can still have it without dressing up the mutton as lamb - I certainly don't do that but sadly I do have girlfriends who do and it's miserable to see
the hubby thought it was a laugh to see me trying to offload this young admirer - but like trying to swat a fly at a bbq!
-
At 10.30am uk time Lynn says everything is ok with her....

BEER GOGGLES, :pmsl: :roflmao:  :5+5:
