Is anyone using Windows 7 ?
« on: October 27, 2009, 12:03:45 AM »
I am considering a move from Vista  Home Premium to Windows 7--the pro version. Is it as good to use as the blurbs state?

It must be better than Vista!

I'm told that Windows 7 was supposed to fix all the problems in Vista Centuries.

I'm on Vista and will move as soon as I can to Windows 7.

But not an expert on the intricacies of Windows 7.

I think Poddy has a fair amount of knowledge of it.

You'll have to ask to have your cell ward room upgraded Smee.  It's not a vista room is it?

I have been a Beta tester for Windows 7 ever since they first released the beta version for testing.

What i have found is that Win7 is has the functionality of XP Pro and the Sleekness of Win 98 which was the most robust O/S that they have ever realeased

Win 7 is even backwards compatible to most Win 98 applications this is a big plus in my book.

Almost all drivers that I have tried on Win7 have worked without a hitch

I give Win 7 both thumbs up and then some :)

Vista in my and thousands  of other IT Pros opinion is the worst O/S ever realeased it ranges somewhere between the devil's finest work and 1000 monkeys on 1000 computers writing an Operating System

Thank you so much, poddy.  :praise: :wine:   That is great to hear. It will be a relief to ditch Vista.

I have had Windows 98, XP and Windows 2000 on other laptops and they were all better for me than Vista.

Centuries,

I think JB Hi FI has them on special at the moment.

You will have to do a clean install, dont do the upgrade from vista, back up all uor data and reformat then do the clean install and then load the applcations and restore your data.

Yes its a PITA but that way you will have a clean start :)

Why thank you Kacsa maybe if I get over your way I will collect hehehehehe

I will do that poddy...Or , to be honest, I will get help from the smart ones here and do that...I have much to learn.  And thank you once more. I agree with all the adjectives ;D

I think Vista was devised to give a computer dummy like myself the feeling the computer is possessed---or I am, fluffy. Perhaps both :roflmao:

Thankyou for your thoughts Poddy. Where you do a clean install post reformat - are there full installation and upgrade versions available - or is it a one copy suits all?

I plan to get Windows 7 at some point... I knew it had received very good reviews from you, Poddy, and I'm glad to hear it's still not churning up ulcer-sized pebbles such as Vista has done for so many.

So why change from XP pro?

I am using windows 7 on some machines and find it the best M/S O/S since 98se. That said the professional or ultimate editions are needed for Xp compatabilty mode. One of the core weaknesses in vile vista in my opinion, apart from resource hungry and slow. Let alone vista wanting to control the computer not the operator in control.

If you have any contacts in USA buy 7 there, ie pro upgrade is $189US with post and exchange rate about $210AU. JB hi fi is $350Au with post.

The other thing to consider is 32 bit windows can only access 3Gb of ram, 6Gb of ram is only $120/300 depending on desktop / laptop and type . 6Gb of ram for most people is faster than same amount of money spent extra on faster CPU. 64 bit windows is faster with the extra ram but there are still compatibility issues.IE M/S word can not spell check in outlook for emails. M/S O/S and word and outlook all M/S but no 64 bit word or outlook yet.

For new computers I definately advise people to take 7 rather than wasting time, money or effort on vista. For existing machines my advice is, if it is working leave it alone. Wait till machine major upgrade or replacement before thinking about change.

Drat! Blast!

This laptop, with Vista Premium (32 bit, 3gB of ram) was the one on which I wanted to install Windows 7 Pro.  I use this one a lot. It came with Vista. As I have only had it for a year, I will not be buying another for a while. :nhj:

The desktop will have Windows 7(Lucky desktop!) and my OH is staying with XP pro on his laptop for the moment ;D

I think I will wait a month or so and then decide------ Looks as if it will be Ultimate.  Grrr!  :2guns:

By the way have I said that Vista is an over bloated, ponderous, reasourse hungry, abomination?

A spawn of the devil.

I have always taken new OS releases with great cynicism.  I don't like getting near them for at least 6 months after release so those at the bleeding edge have borne the pain.  I'm still running a couple of machines on 98SE - why? Because they work and do what I need them to do - and I'm not into changing for the sake of change.

As for Vista - there is one aspect of it's sale that is (from my knowledge) singularly unique - and one that is likely, we would hope, to never be surpassed.....

... it's the only OS to have been sold with backward licensing for it's predecessor (XP) - AND - to be sold with forward licensing for it's successor (Windows 7).

Sorta like "We know how crap this is, but we need you to spend money now..."

I am buoyed by Poddy's reference to Win98 when talking about Windows 7 and I'm hoping that the 6 months I wait will be quiet.....

The information has been of great assistance to me. Thank you everyone.

I was reading some forums about Windows 7 and one of the posters mentioned there was no Start menu on the Desktop.

I may have misunderstood the posters.

Just read an article in the local paper about the first high school in NSW to get laptops for students (part of the Federal government's "computers in schools" program) - which were supplied with Windows 7.  They've had them since August and the principal reports that the year 9 students "have been going great guns".

"It was very exciting for them and I am pleased with how well they have been going - and not just the nerds but also kids who are less academic".

At least there were no hints of difficulties - which I take as a positive sign.

What sort of problems do people have with Vista?

The Aussie pricing on this is a bit lame.... I note availanility, particluarly in the US - $140 for the 3 user family pack (Premium)
