I just found this thread, but it's morning, so I'll have to come back tonight.

I'm always the last to go to bed, I think it's to do with having a bit of peace & quiet when everyone else has gone. I'm always in trouble here for staying up late. I'm always tired too lol

What's the story on Facebook, is it safe. I have been referred to a great fly fishing fly tying section but I am unsure as to it's safety.
am I showing my dumbness & ignorance?

I've got a page on Facebook but I don't log on there very often. I have heard it is unsafe to put information tracable back to you on it, but am not an expert on this.

A mom asks for opinions: â€œOne of my daughters, who is 16, wants to get Facebook. I took a look at the site, and it doesn't seem safe to me at all. She says she will set the maximum privacy settings to her account, but I don't know about this.

The fact that you can type someone's name into the search box and it will find them is kind of creepy. As you are probably already aware, most kids on the site put their first and last names. If they've entered what school they go to, you can see that information as well as what city they live in, and the year they will graduate. Also, their photo is shown. You can see all this even if the profile is set to private and you can't see their actual page.

I find this very disturbing... are kids forgetting that once you put information on the internet, it's there for ever? Or do you think I'm just overreacting? I mean, just because "everyone is doing it" doesn't mean it's safe.

PS- Yes, we can see what our daughter is doing online, we have a filtering service which has a history that cannot be cleared. So I would know if she signed up for Facebook without my knowledge.â€

Deniseâ€™s thoughts: I would let her try with the stipulation that you can take a look at what is happening at any time and you have her password. With your filtering software and checking up, I wouldn't worry.

It seems at Facebook.com only friends she has allowed and people in networks she has joined(her high school is a network) can see her. From there she can still block anyone. That seems pretty safe together with what you are doing at home. Updated: Yes, you can see city and high school if she has joined those networks. The high school network would be fine with me, but the city one is really not necessary as she can add friends individually that are not in her school.

Ubbrd, you can adjust your privacy settings in Facebook to customise how much the public can see. I have mine set so that the public can only see my name and pic/avatar, not my personal info, wall or friends.

Take care when messaging people via facebook because it temporarily gives them access to your friends list etc.

You can set your preferences so that only friends can see anything, thus no one can find you or see your picture unless they are a friend.

Once you are involved in networks that may not be the case though.

You can also edit details that can be seen about yourself, so you could be Ubbrd from planet earth.

my kids would probably kill me if I joined Facebook, did anyone see a news item about teenagers complaining about their parents wanting to be their 'friend' on Facebook. Parents were saying it was the only way they could have a conversation with their kids and wanted to get to know them.
Some kids rejected their parents as friends. The article came from the U.S.

I refuse to do the Facebook thing, just as I refuse to do the Twitter thing.

It will get to the stage where people have computers surgically attached to themselves, and when someone has a sudden collapse in the street and is driven by paramedics to the hospital, the first thing the acute emergency doctor will do is make sure the patient has a modem connected. "He's still breathing!" will be replaced by "He's still online!"

And "Let's check his vital signs" will be replaced by "Let's check his Facebook profile!"

lol, mejado and lilly, my daughter would definitely reject me on facebook, she occasionally shows me a very quick "edited" look at her facebook around once a year lol, but even then she wizzes past any controversial photos so quickly they are a blur, I just know the answer if I applied to be a friend, lol, fortunately my son is only 13 and hasnt got his facebook thing together yet and the odd conversation is still possible, yes live and in person - its really good that, but I still get accused of trying to log into his messenger but he forgets he set it up so it automatically logs in on my computer, i cant even work that one out, and have to quit it each time i reboot the machine, dont know where or what to look at anyway and the ids are so weird he talks to i wouldnt know what to say to them anyway lol

he has a young asian mate called ern (spoken in a guteral grunt) who is mono syballic, responds in grunts, lives on ps3/4?, xbox and online, 70" or something plasma all wired for games etc. aand toons, conversation is not at all possible with ern, i have no idea how his parents communicate, lovely kid and loyal friend to my son, but seems to achieve all that without human intervention, product of the web and games worlds, we should consider ourselves fortunate he must have chosen a "good" guy games character as his role model... hope that doenst change

LOL gr8, that 'guteral grunt' is a language that I recognise I recognise it, but I don't understand it, The universal teenage boy's language, try asking a question, that 'guteral grunt' is the answer, I haven't worked out if it means yes, no or maybe yet. No wonder they communicate on Facebook.

Barny ~ here's the low down, "night Wol" thread was originally started by "wolette"

...on the old ebay boards ..it was very popular for years and had thousands of postings.. I started this thread here out of sentimental reasons.. I would go there when I had trouble sleeping ...there was always someone there to talk to with the same sleeping disorders as me.. it was a friendly thread and I can't ever remember anyone ever fighting...the thread has started again at ebay with "wolettes" permission...{ nice of the new OP to ask permission..."wolette" from memory was and is a very respected member...she does post here sometimes but not on a regular basis....on this thread....http://www.ozroundtable.com/index.php?topic=729.0...... the spelling may have been done tongue in cheek...you'll have to ask "wolette" about that.....Hope this explains about the The Night WOL's with Insomniac thread here....

but prefer to be awake at night after all the day business has finished

My best 'sleep time' is from 4am until 9.30/10 am

Always has been if possible.

After 10am real life excitement kicks in.
