Tis the season for fraudulent listings on eBay
« on: November 12, 2010, 11:02:11 AM »
I just saw a post about this item on the eBay boards.

http://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidsLogin&item=280583003879&ed=

Seller joined eBay 1st November, now NARU
sold 23 of this item at $110 each = $2530

Who knows how many other sales of other items in the last 10 days!
All transaction records have been deleted by eBay.

Hopefully the buyers have paid with PayPal and will get refunds.

eBay needs to enforce a verification process for sellers.

I would say it is long past due that eBay put in place a verification process for it's users with particular any new one's coming onboard whether they be a buyer or seller.  It would certainly cut down on the amount of scammers on there but with most verifications process's nothing is infallible sadly, it is akin to the saying a locked door will only keep out an honest thief, a truly determined one will find a way.

This time of year brings out the opportunists looking to make a quick buck and in some respects eBay offers them a quick and effective medium for them to do it.

Ace,

Me and many others have been pushing for proper verification for quite a number of years, some of us have even been banned from eBay because of it, yet the push goes on :)

If I was a betting person and well I will admit to the odd occasional flutter, I doubt very much they will ever likely for the foreseeable future have any form of verification put in place akin to say somewhere like Oztion, though their own verification is not bulletproof either it is a darnsight better than eBay when optioning to have new sellers onboard.

It is a disappointment then that some have been banned but good to know that they are still fighting for it inspite of that - I take my hat off to them, many would walk away and not continue to push for it.

I have always leaned on the notion that they rank profits over genuine safety for their consumers to be their driving force despite their numerous claims to the contrary.

It is a sad state of affairs when a corporate body is seen to be less than diligent in protecting the small players - which, in the case of eBay - are the ones that breathed the life into it.

Even less inspiring are the accusations of deliberate indifference to and even active support of, fraud.

Put simply, EBay makes its money by taking a cut of every transaction that crosses its path - whether genuine or fraudulent - and the efforts to categorically discern between them are all but invisible.

And this is the most condemning and disheartening part of it ... that it is seemingly impossible to find the evidence to argue against these accusations.

Indeed it is, extremely hard to dissuade from that notion.

Nobody wants to believe that they don't value and wish to protect their consumers but the way it appears often conflicts with that.

A business has as its first priority the making of money, but this can and frequently does become quite obscene with the business becoming larger... It is noticeable when one DOES find a large business or corporation which genuinely functions with integrity.

On the other hand, I know small businesses which scorn certain types of behaviour - and which do function as a measure of the owner's own integrity.

Another one ......

http://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidsLogin&item=270662776741&ed=

Seller joined eBay 11th November, now NARU
last 100 sales were for 202 of this item at $14.99 each on 13th November = $3027

A too good to be true price for that item! I guess the seller is relying on the fact that a lot of buyers wouldn't think twice about paying a seller $15 by bank deposit.

Who knows how many other sales of other items in the 2 days!
http://completed.shop.ebay.com.au/lkgutt/m.html?rt=nc&LH_Complete=1&_fln=1&_ipg=50&_trksid=p3911.c0.m283&_rdc=1
According to Goofbay the seller had a total $18535 worth of listings.
All transaction records have been deleted by eBay.

Am I being repetitive?

Hopefully the buyers have paid with PayPal and will get refunds.

eBay needs to enforce a verification process for sellers.

Hmm, I wonder if this is the same seller?

http://shop.ebay.com.au/vxcree/m.html

Similar low value items, joined eBay 10 Nov, zero feedback (and a store, how does that work? I thought you had to have 5 feedback to open a store?)

Cuddlee Pet Pillow Plush Stuffed Pillow Pet - Bear
$9.99 Free Postage

I don't know how big they are, but postage would have to cost at least $4.55.
Even the Chinese fake Pillow Pets are selling for $20!

I sense that there are some good concerned citizens doing some reporting, hmmm?

Since eBay will not protect its members by genuine anti-fraud methods and genuine verification methods, it falls to the people to do their work for them.

Usually a seller specifies no postage to PO boxes if delivery is via courier. There is no way they could be selling them courier delivered for $21!

I can't get over how many people are willing to buy off a zero feedback seller who has been registered on eBay for 1-2 days, with no seller location or other details.

I've just checked the listings from post #14, gone.

But, they've been replaced by another ID, AGAIN!!!!

Cuddlee Pet Pillow - Converts to a Pillow in Seconds
Item location: South Australia, South Australia, Australia

and this in the listing:
Sales Tax
For shipments to Ohio addresses, we are required by State law to collect 6.25% Sales Tax.

We ship most orders with 48 hours. Your order will arrive based on the shipping service selected at checkout. All items are shipped from Ohio.

They've obviously cut and pasted directly from a legitimate listing!

If the person is resident in Australia and is selling here in Australia he/she has no legal right or obligation to collect tax (6.25% Sales Tax) on behalf of another state in another country if the item is won/bought by a person from that state or country (Ohio, USA in this case).

I also forgot to report those other listings so I'll have to go check to see if they're still there.

The Pet Pillows are still there - 12 sold.

Don't buyers read the listings and check seller's history and feedback?

I'm sure most eBay sellers strive to provide the best products, price and service and keep a good feedback record and DSRs. Then when dodgy sellers like this swoop in and rip people off these buyers will probably tell everybody about their bad experience with buying on eBay! Surely it is in eBay's best interests to get rid of the dodgy sellers.

There needs to be a verification process for sellers.

and the 2nd  last positive she got as a buyer is actually a neg also , but sellers cant leave negs for buyers or else he would be lower still than the 58 %

We had a strange sale the other day. Brand new eBayer, joined 1/12, purchased a $140 BIN late that night. We sent an Invoice the following morning and they completed checkout to pay by bank deposit. A couple of hours later we received an email from eBay to say the bid had been retracted or cancelled. Huh? I didn't think that BINs could be retracted so thought there must have been some problem. Buyer was now NARU so we filed a dispute and received immediate refund of FVF.

This morning I was checking the bank account to post out a couple of other orders and their deposit was there! I packaged up the item, posted it to them and emailed the tracking details to the address on the original transaction. Hope they receive it OK.

I'm guessing they must have been de-registered for some reason???

Problem is a lot of those limited reply threads are used up with 'some' busy correcting spelling or picking apart the Op so they never get a straight answer in some cases.

Mind you the Buyer in this thread http://forums.ebay.com.au/topic/Ask-A-Member/Cant-Afford-It/500138683&start=0 went on my blocked buyer list immediately!!!!

You would think Ebay would have some sort of red flag sensor to shut down these sorts when the negs roll in, but noooo.
