Since I do the photographic work for my seller friend, I have a particular interest in the rendition of colours on the net.  The problem is extremely difficult to overcome since one half of the problem is with the seller and the other half with the buyer.

A seller can take a good photo - but the lighting source will affect the colour. If using natural (sun) light, then the time of day will affect the colour of the light.  As well as this, there are some materials whose apparent colouring changes with the angle of view.

But even assuming a seller can get a top notch photo up on their listing, what the buyer sees may be HUGELY different. Unless you view the same picture on two properly calibrated monitors, (such as you would find in production areas of TV stations) the chances of having two monitors display the same colours is very low.

Factors that affect colour include:
 - the type of display technology - eg: CRT, LCD, Plasma, OLED
 - the variants of that technology - eg: phosphors for CRT monitors; PVA, MVA, IPS, etc for LCD monitors
 - the ambient lighting conditions
 - the 'personal preference' settings and adjustments of the buyer

On this last point, I have seen people happily watching TV with the 'colour' setting so high, people's faces look like they are suffering from 3rd degree sunburn. If they adjust their monitors to similar settings, they are never going to get a true representation of the colour of an item on their monitor.

.... and trying to tell some people that, is a very dangerous game in the world of eBay!!

As such, all a seller can do is prepare a decent photograph, include a 'colour disclaimer' and cross their fingers.

... but this example is priceless.

BNWT - thanks for a good laugh!

Hey Brumby....isn't there a site somewhere where you can check the colour levels on your computer?

I remember ages ago trying one out....and saved it...but then my comuter went 'BLURK' one day....and I lost all my links.

There are a few places that have tools to help you set up your monitor for brightness, contrast and gamma - but they are still trapped behind the screen and rely on the user's opinion on what looks 'right'. These tools can help improve the display significantly and bring things closer to reality, but they are still only approximations.

The colour values such as RGB(199,18,5) or X'C71205' (one of the red colours in Uluru at the top of this page) will direct every display in the world to display the same amount of red, green and blue - but every monitor of different type and settings will show a slightly different variation of the colour to the human observer.

To be consistent, an external device which looks at the colours actually displayed needs to be used. This heads into the world of calibration where specialised equipment and training are necessary for consistent results. This is not a cheap exercise and needs to be repeated regularly, as monitors do 'age' which will affect their accuracy in rendering colours. Even more to the point is whether the monitor actually has sufficient adjustments available so that it can be calibrated. This is not a common ability in a lot of consumer level equipment.

But even if the seller has a professional studio setup with top range lighting and puts up the perfect image and the buyer's monitor is perfectly adjusted - if the buyer gets the item and looks at it on the kitchen table under the old fluoro light, the colour will quite likely be different.

.... and there is pretty well nothing you can do about it.

I always make a point of looking at my listing using other peoples computers ........... aaaaaaarrrggh !!!

sometimes the results are quite garish

I think there is a lot of truth when 'Warm Tips' says, "the imagination will inevitably different"

Tags - I knew you would ... and your observations had me nodding energetically and cracking up - I know exactly what you are talking about!

A lot of my work is similar to 'document' photography, but there are a number of products that require 3D shots - and I'm heading towards the light tent idea.  As we speak, I'm reorganising my 'studio' area to more than double it's size - for the sake of ease of working with my current setup as well as making room for the possibility of a light tent.

But, as we both know, we can produce a brilliant shot, only to have someone critical of the colour - when comparing it to their 15 year old monitor with a 50% boost on saturation......
