Please help a computer semi numpty!
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:37:33 PM »
Ok....I know a bit....but sometimes I'm left scratching my head .....just before I resort to thumping it on the nearest brick wall...lol

My server is AOL.

Up until last week...no problems....worked like a charm.

All of a sudden....I can't access most sites....the bottom left of the screen says 'connecting to site 205.188.146.146'...the page hangs for a bit then I get the Page can't be displayed screen.

BUT...I can access a couple of sites....Twitter is one...and my work webmail is another.

If I change to IE I can get everything....so I am connected to the internet.

The problem is also causing my AOL email to freeze.....but if I log of and sign in again....I can sometimes read the first email before it freezes again.

I've been through all the Help and diagnostic stuff with AOL and there doesn't seem to be an answer.

Can ya help?

What is this? A "shoot on sight" policy?

Leave me out of this.....

Power down everything. Modem, Router if you have one and PC. if your Mdoem has a battery pack also disconnect/remove that then replace last.

Count to 100.

Power up Modem. Wait 30 secs. Power up Router. Wait 30 secs. Power up PC. See if it all works ok.

Theory here is your ISP changes things from time to time without telling the users. You then sometimes need a full power down to get it all working properly again.

I'm on dial up Ernie.... :(

No fancy bells and whistles here...lol

The computer has been turned off completely a few times...and I have run all my spy ware etc stuff.

It just kinda like something is blocking my server from connecting to most sits.

My daughter did download Firefox this week though...could that have something to do with the problem?

Oh!  And I did update to IE8 this week too at about the same time.

Could it be the new IE8 that is conflicting with my server?

Roo, I'd blame IE8, Microsoft is always at fault!  :lovefirefox:

I just googled 'IE8 problems' and got 3,280,000 results!

Oh crikey...guess I have a bit of reading to do...lol

How do you delete the new IE8?

Is it a simple procedure?

Will IE7 come back as normal?

It's not IE8 :)

When she dl'd Firefox did she download any proxy/anonimiser type programs?

Also make sure you dl go to adobe.com and download adobe flash/shockwave - some sites just need the right version and will sit there sometimes not telling you they need it. On the flash page it will show you if you have the right version, or in fact even installed!

I tend to procrastinate when it comes to uploading new stuff..but Lil Roo is ruthless and updates anything that is 2 minutes past its useby date...lol

The firefox download was uneventful..just the normal type of download with no mention of proxy/anonimer stuf.....I have no idea what they are anyway...lol

Adobe seems up to date....but would that have any bearing on me being able to view normal websites?

My gut feeling is that it has something to do with IE* though.

Hi Roo....I'm a computer numpty but not a research numpty....so try googling this

IE8 can't open some websites

.....and try other variations of the problem.

What i find is that others will be having the same problem so it may take you directly to the answer.  If you just put in problem with IE8, then it will show you all the problems under the sun...anyway...just thought it might help.

Try the same query with firefox instead of IE8 and see what that gives you etc.

Roo the fact that is is reporting the IP address like it is I would say its a firewall associated with your AV.

Some AV programs have a builtin proxy server and everything is passed via that.

Or a firewall setting.

Thingk if you upgraded iether of these just b4 problems started.

Hi Roo,

Sorry I did not get to this earlier, it sounds like a compatability issue, like you mentioned little Roo likes to update everything 2 seconds out of date, it could be an addon conflict, this address below will run you through some steps to find out if it is exactly that, if this fails to rectify it come back and I'll have a rethink for you, I know I do occassionally experience the same thing with firefox.

Determining exactly the issue at hand can be trial and error, but we can sort it out...eventually lol

Give it a shot and let me know how it works out.

Thank you one and all for some really great ideas!

I'll go through them one at a time and see how I go.  It won't be tonight....will be off the computer most of the night....but it will happen...lol

Don't think it's a Firewall problem though Hawk...I turned it off and still had the same problem...*sigh

Liisa's link looks promising though...might try that one first.

Catch ya around buddies!
