Title: S/H books for sale on eBay - sellers, your experience...
Post by: *CountessA* on March 14, 2010, 06:06:45 PM
Is there any point in selling s/h books on eBay? I mean books which haven't rare or classic status. They're just average fiction in a variety of genres.

I'm trying to clear some shelf space. *huge sigh* Why don't I have more rooms, a library especially for books? I need more space! But in the interim, if I at least get rid of some genre fiction, mostly read just once, it might help.

What pitfalls should I look out for?

Would I be better off just packing the books into boxes and checking for bookshops that sell s/h books?

Is it worth it?

Countess , secondhand book shops/ book exchange shops  will give you very little for them and with selling them on ebay the postage is the killer .... you will never get anywhere near what you paid for them new , but your best bet for money return if you have time is to have a stall at a market or swap meet or similar where you could get I think approx $8 for a recent s/h novel in read once condition .... failing that  Sme Enterprises is considering new business ventures at the moment , one being a coffe shop come second hand book shop come collectable/antique china shop in which case I would gladly do a bulk deal with you ..... GR8 may be able to give you some good advice on this question

my only reservation about buying them from you would be that I have seen your "dream" book list and I am not sure that I could find anyone else on this planet that may want the same reading material

Hey Countess. Do you have any second hand Psycopathic Serial Killer novels?

Smee! *laughs her head off* Yes, all right, I do have some esoteric tastes, but I also read a HUGE amount of general genre fiction!

Yes, some mysteries/thrillers, Ubbie. Are you a Peter Robinson fan? (I tend to read his novels once, and then never again, whereas there are other authors whose books I'll read again and again.)

Tello, where should I post an advertisement?

I suppose I could try posting them on Trading Post or Oztion...

Countess. I don't recall reading any Peter Robinson books but if there is plenty of gruesome psycho stuff in them I'd read them

Dean Koontz is good.

I intend asking Retirement Villages and hospitals in the area if they would like some books donated. I know one of the Private Hospitals is always needing a few books in very good condition for visitors and patients to read.

Countess, the only good thing about listing on Oztion is you get 60 days listing for free. I don't know whether there are enough buyers there. If you are going to try eBay, maybe bundle them together as a pack of the same author or same genre. That way you could fit a few soft covers into a 3kg satchel. I had a quick look at the book board on eBay the other day and they all seem to be suffering from lack of sales.

If they don't sell, and you want to get rid of them, I'd do as Centuries suggested. In the past I have donated toys and books to the local hospital. Some went into the waiting rooms, others into the kids play rooms. I'm sure that any hospital/residential care centres would love donations of your books.

aunt ingrid if you type up a list of the books and author, year of print or publish, publisher etc. I will look them all up for you and send you a list back, can give you ideas of values, you can have my login and list them in my store for 30 days if you wish, gives them a bit longer exposure, or i can send link so you can look them up, do a spreadsheet and i will check it over for you, quicker if you do it there, no lists required just bookmark the tabs in the search engine i will send you link for, specialist books can fetch good prices and certain authors

G'day Countess & Gr8. Don't forget, I read Psyco killer novels.

Gr8. My new computer is going great guns. It is very fast. I have two drives, a C drive which is 350 gigabytes & a D drive which is 1 Terrabyte. The latest in video cards & 4 gig of DDR3 Ram (I think from memory). It is 64 bit so it will take a heap more Ram & will also take more hard drives & a second Video card.

It is a cracker.
