Notice to ALL Ebay Sellers RE: Australia Post
« on: November 22, 2010, 12:33:28 PM »
Aviation Security-Air parcel Restrictions to the united states and Canada.

Due to hightened border protection and increased aviation security measures introduced by the united states, there is likely to be delays of around 48 hours to parcels being sent to this destination.

These new measures have higher requirements for screening and transport, and as a result a $9.00 surcharge will be imposed on all air parcels over 453 grams (16 ounces) destined for the united states from 22 november 2010.

This Surcharge does NOT apply to business accounts.

Australia post apologises for any inconvenience this may cause!

What on earth...? A $9 surcharge when airmail is already more expensive FROM Australia than TO Australia?

This is insane.

I've heard that some sellers found this out by rocking up to the post office today and being hit with it at the counter.

Apparently one had 3 parcels that 'qualified' ... Ouch!

Will the eBay postage calculator be right?  I can see sellers scrambling to make sure their listings have correct postage.

Combined postage..?

Hurry to get an AP business account; that's all I can say.

But for personal gifts and what-have-you, it's atrociously unfair. I will have little choice but to buy items from Amazon or US sites, with my friends' addresses as the recipients, rather than choose something from an Australian shop, wrap it, include a funny letter, and send it from here.

there are a number of sellers on the eBay power sellers board whom cliam they have posted today to USA an d not been charged , on the other hand there a handful who say they have been charged ... once again it seems hit and miss depending on which post office you use , although I am sure it will not take to hit every post office ... the other answer is to send surface mail I guess

I always have this question.

A 1kg airmail registered parcel from Malaysia to anywhere in Australia cost me about A$5 (about 15 Ringgit) I wonder how could the post office profit from this?

Take away the tracking number, it is about A$3.80. And it is still airmail and takes about 10 working days to arrive.

So are they raising the fees to cover this losses?

IMHO this additional cost should NOT be passed on to other countries, America is financially in the toilet as it is so financially restricting trade is not the smartest thing to do, many many buyers on Etsy, Ebay and various other sites have stated they will simply STOP offering goods to the USA period as it will not be cost effective.

I also noticed as per usual Australia post have nothing on their site about it and currently only 'some' Post offices are charging the fee as many are still unaware, great way to run a postal company.

I dashed down the Post Office today in a panic as I had several christmas gifts to send to the USA, as luck would have it almost all of them went over the limit making it a VERY expensive excercise, (almost $80 more) as they were headed for different destinations. I pleaded with My Local PO Lady as there was nothing on the Aus post site and no signage reporting the increase so technically I could not be charged??? she said had been fielding abuse all day regarding the increase, she seemed tired and let me mail them at yesterdays rate.. whew...she did not seem happy at all.

PS> I was informed that this new Process via U.S Customs screening and checks, that ALL parcels will be delayed by 48 hours to allow this process for the foreseeable future....

Good onya Liisa. There is still nothing on the Aus Post site. I googled to see if there was an announcement through the media, but found nothing. The only link I found was Aus Post on twitter confirming that the surcharge did come into effect from today.

The question everyone should be asking is, what is Australia Post doing from a security point of view to justify this increased cost?

Is Australia Post utilising extra manpower and/ or electronic detection devises to screen these parcels? If not what is happening to to extra $9 per parcel?

Law enforcement authorities are normally the ones who deal with such situations.

In years gone by Australian Customs Officers checked suspect incoming mail for such dangers. Who, if anyone, is checking outgoing mail now?

This sounds ridiculous to me.

Ubbs, from what I can gather, the US Govt has imposed the fee on all inbound parcels over 453grams. Aus Post is collecting the fee for them.

from all reports ......this is a USA charge not an AP charge , so it is for extra checks at the other end , they are charging this amount to AP and AP are just passing it on .... I think they would have added a little "tax" of their own though for their troubles

Correct, it IS a USA Customs charge and AP is passing it on, below is a local example of what this will now do to an already financially crippled U.S.A, and those that still send goods there will bump up the cost of the goods to cover it, lose lose situation for the USA methinks.

Fair Dinkum Wheels. Since when did we start funding overseas countries security.

I'd be interested to know if China, North Korea, Vietnam, the Arab block countries & Niger are collecting fees for the USA. I wonder if  Vatican City is? Vatican City is an independant country with no citizens.

There is nothing on the ebay.com or AU Announcements. Surely a surcharge that affects so many buyers and sellers is important enough to warrant an announcement!

Right Smee, and once other countries catch on, and they will..... the good old U.S of A will be stuck as usual with their thumb firmly up their derriere lol, but hey..... making other countries pay for THEIR security was a good idea right....... right????

Who wants to take bets on where this will all end up.... Odds are that the US Will continue to wave the flag and in good old USA style NOT back down no matter what the cost.. my money is on them refusing to do a roll back, (well not for a while anyway) they thrive on paranoia and sensationalism.

the official statement

"Effective 22 November 2010, all parcels greater than 453 grams (16 ounces) bound for the United States (and associated territories and open transit countries) will be subject to tighter aviation security measures introduced by the US government. A $9.00 surcharge will be applied to all parcels destined for these countries.

Which countries does the surcharge apply to?

-Guam
-Marshall Island-Palau
-Virgin Islands
-Federated States of Micronesia.

What Products and services are affected?

.....The increased border protection and aviation security measures have a direct impact on Australia Post's processes. The new measures have increasedd the costs associated with screening and transport, and as a result a surcharge on all international parcels bound for the United States has been applied.

Would you like some napalm with that??

From the Australia post Website....

Mail Security

The United States Postal Service has advised that, owing to heightened security, longer delivery times are likely for articles addressed to US government agencies. This applies in particular to Washington DC five-digit zip codes ranging from 202xx - 205xx.

Mail may be subject to irradiation treatment prior to delivery. The irradiation process is safe***, but the US Postal Service is advising mail users that particular commodities may be affected:

* Any biological sample e.g. blood samples, could be rendered useless***
* Diagnostic kits e.g. to monitor blood sugar levels, may be adversely affected
* Photographic film will be fully exposed
* Food will be adversely affected***
* Drugs and medicines could have their efficacy affected
* Eyeglasses and contact lenses could be adversely affected
* Electronic devices would probably be rendered inoperable***

The US Postal Service advises that each irradiated mail article will bear an official notification to the addressee that the item was subjected to an irradiation process.

*** Safe eh??

Finally, an Announcement on eBay:

***Australia Post surcharge for packages to the United States***

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/au/201011241103362.html

24 November 2010 | 11:04AM EST

Due to additional security measures, Australia Post have advised that articles over 453g and all Express Courier International and Express Post International services will be subject to an additional $9 security surcharge and may face transit delays of up to 48 hours.

International post regulations for each country can be found on Australia Post’s website here and any enquiries regarding the surcharge should be directed to Australia Post.

eBay is currently waiting for further news regarding the surcharge, however sellers are recommended to avoid using calculated shipping on items that ship to the US as the shipping calculator is not currently configured to include the surcharge.

Update on Click and Send site

24 November 2010 - Important Update

Due to heightened border protection and increased aviation security measures introduced by the USA, there is likely to be delays of around 48 hours to mail being sent to these destinations.

These new measures have unforseen cost implications associated with screening and transport, and as a result a $9 surcharge will be imposed on all parcels over 453g destined for the USA. Business customers, please contact your Account Manager for details.

As a result of these measures, transactions to the following destinations cannot be paid for using a credit card. Click and Send customers can still create transactions to these destinations and choose the "pay later at post" option.

USA
Puerto Rico
Guam
Marshall Islands
Palau
Virgin Islands
Federated states of Micronesia
USA minor outlying islands

Please note the prices displayed in Click and Send do not include the surcharge, please check at your retail outlet for more details when lodging items for the USA and USA territories.
