A mom asks for opinions: “One of my daughters, who is 16, wants to get Facebook. I took a look at the site, and it doesn't seem safe to me at all. She says she will set the maximum privacy settings to her account, but I don't know about this.
The fact that you can type someone's name into the search box and it will find them is kind of creepy. As you are probably already aware, most kids on the site put their first and last names. If they've entered what school they go to, you can see that information as well as what city they live in, and the year they will graduate. Also, their photo is shown. You can see all this even if the profile is set to private and you can't see their actual page.
I find this very disturbing... are kids forgetting that once you put information on the internet, it's there for ever? Or do you think I'm just overreacting? I mean, just because "everyone is doing it" doesn't mean it's safe.
PS- Yes, we can see what our daughter is doing online, we have a filtering service which has a history that cannot be cleared. So I would know if she signed up for Facebook without my knowledge.â€
Denise’s thoughts: I would let her try with the stipulation that you can take a look at what is happening at any time and you have her password. With your filtering software and checking up, I wouldn't worry.
It seems at Facebook.com only friends she has allowed and people in networks she has joined(her high school is a network) can see her. From there she can still block anyone. That seems pretty safe together with what you are doing at home. Updated: Yes, you can see city and high school if she has joined those networks. The high school network would be fine with me, but the city one is really not necessary as she can add friends individually that are not in her school.

Ubbrd, you can adjust your privacy settings in Facebook to customise how much the public can see. I have mine set so that the public can only see my name and pic/avatar, not my personal info, wall or friends.
Take care when messaging people via facebook because it temporarily gives them access to your friends list etc.

You can set your preferences so that only friends can see anything, thus no one can find you or see your picture unless they are a friend.
Once you are involved in networks that may not be the case though.
You can also edit details that can be seen about yourself, so you could be Ubbrd from planet earth.

lol, mejado and lilly, my daughter would definitely reject me on facebook, she occasionally shows me a very quick "edited" look at her facebook around once a year lol, but even then she wizzes past any controversial photos so quickly they are a blur, I just know the answer if I applied to be a friend, lol, fortunately my son is only 13 and hasnt got his facebook thing together yet and the odd conversation is still possible, yes live and in person - its really good that, but I still get accused of trying to log into his messenger but he forgets he set it up so it automatically logs in on my computer, i cant even work that one out, and have to quit it each time i reboot the machine, dont know where or what to look at anyway and the ids are so weird he talks to i wouldnt know what to say to them anyway lol
he has a young asian mate called ern (spoken in a guteral grunt) who is mono syballic, responds in grunts, lives on ps3/4?, xbox and online, 70" or something plasma all wired for games etc. aand toons, conversation is not at all possible with ern, i have no idea how his parents communicate, lovely kid and loyal friend to my son, but seems to achieve all that without human intervention, product of the web and games worlds, we should consider ourselves fortunate he must have chosen a "good" guy games character as his role model... hope that doenst change

Barny ~ here's the low down, "night Wol" thread was originally started by "wolette"(http://www.ozroundtable.com/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=639;type=avatar)...on the old ebay boards ..it was very popular for years and had thousands of postings.. I started this thread here out of sentimental reasons.. I would go there when I had trouble sleeping ...there was always someone there to talk to with the same sleeping disorders as me.. it was a friendly thread and I can't ever remember anyone ever fighting...the thread has started again at ebay with "wolettes" permission...{ nice of the new OP to ask permission..."wolette" from memory was and is a very respected member...she does post here sometimes but not on a regular basis....on this thread....http://www.ozroundtable.com/index.php?topic=729.0...... the spelling may have been done tongue in cheek...you'll have to ask "wolette" about that.....Hope this explains about the The Night WOL's with Insomniac thread here....

Thank you for sharing your sleeping patterns with us. Yes, I'd have to say I have noticed that you tend to lurk the quiet corridors of the RT in the wee small hours of the morning.
From all the smilies you have posted it seems you also eat, drink, partake of sword fights (you should get together with the Countess - she does medieval sword fighting), spend money (TV infomercials?), have a bath (with Fluffy?), catch up with the daily news, drink copious amounts of coffee, obviously to keep you in peak alertness whilst you partake of these activities. Seems you also play music. Do the other occupants of your household wear earplugs? (No reflection on your playing skills, it's just that it is done in the middle of the night.)

And from another... some more goodnight wishes to Centuries. There are more of us who love the early/late hours of the night owls than is often thought.
I now feel like raiding the fridge after seeing Centuries' inventive use of the smilies. And shall I also have a bath...? And pat my cat? I've already done the eBaying (I bought some things that were actually cheaper through an eBay seller than elsewhere - first time in a long time) and the other online shopping (I bought a HUGE amount from a German site on behalf of other people), and I suppose I'd better admit I've also had a piece of truly superb German dark-chocolate-covered Marzipan.

Hellooo countess, I adore good marzipan. I have only bought a few things for others on eBay at the moment. Did buy a littls Delft vase for myself as I liked the shape etc. and have some old Japanese ones in a similar shape.
