I'm not quite sure why my dog dislikes other dogs. I adopted him 1 1/2 yrs ago and still learning his ways. I could be wrong in asking people.. please grab your unleashed dog. Instead of getting offended or being an offended ordure-imbued or smart ass dumbshit, I'm asking so YOUR dog doesn't run up on mine and gets hurt. Am I wrong?

You're not wrong; dogs should be leashed when out in public. Ours are 11 yrs old, adopted littermates and they flip out when a dog runs up on them. Sadly, our new, semi-hippie neighbors who grew up in the country have never leashed their dog. It's fine in the back area, but yesterday I saw them cross San Moritz Dr. and take him to the lake, especially bad during a holiday weekend. They are nice but young and although I've told them they should at the very least get a collar and tags (puppy got out and ended up in our driveway), they don't believe in it. It's sad, beautiful dog, but his luck won't last forever.

Christie Gabriel Millette Saturday I asked two people to shorten their leash, because they'll let the dog come over to mine for a sniff. they look at me weird with a dopey look and grin. My dog WILL get them.

Chris Merrill ya, some people just don't get it. When I see dogs off leash while walking mine, I ask them if they'll leash their dog cuz mine aren't so dog-friendly. Over the past 10 years, all but 2 I can recall have been nice about it. Too many owners don't know that dogs have to be properly introduced though.

Christie Gabriel Millette my previous Pitt was cool off leash, and I think most dogs are, but I'd leash her when others were near. She didn't care if there was another anything on the trails, she ran past them to get where she was going.

One of my rescues doesn’t like other dogs. We can’t take her on walks because people don’t put their dog on a leash. If the dog runs up to mine, she will fight. She’s always on a leash. It’s not fair to her that people can’t follow the leash laws.

My roomies pup is not animal friendly too. When she was 5 months, dogs would run up on her and he would scoop her up.. she’s too heavy now and he hollers at people to please leash their dogs. Many gives Attitude and refuse, and when their dog approaches him they see why he made the request… his dog protects him from all other animals now because of being attacked so many times when she was a little pup 😳
So you are correct…
Leash law is for a reason.. safety for both animals and folks.

I won't waste your time by pointing out the obvious issues here. You live in an area where people like to let their dogs have a little freedom. I won't debate the issue but it is what it is. Most dogs out walking with their owners are well mannered. Your dog is the outlier. Again, not judging. You may have to focus on what you have within your control. Look for different areas or times when other dogs won't be out. Also, you can walk the same area religiously at the same time every day. This is a subtle way to train the other dog owners that your dog will be out. Otherwise, warning others that your dog may not react well to other dogs is a good habit.

the obvious is that living in an area where people like their freedom does not entitle them to force their beliefs or behavior on others. Asking folks to be good neighbors is normal ... she is not an outlier as the replies prove

No you are not wrong. We were camping and these people were walking their dog. So since our dogs don't get along with others we crossed the street but they had a 16' extended leash they let them come over by us and said their dog is fine. But we said that maybe but ours don't. I don't get people.

Turid Rugaas a great dog trainer, not in the US, had written excellent books on dog behavior that explains exactly your question. You dog is normal to be alarmed by a strange dog running up directly. My dog also dislikes this. Do what is right for you and your beautiful dog. The trainers books helped me understand the why and stand firm when idiots insist off leash run-ups were just play

We had a dog like that, and people would always allow their dogs to run up to ours, while calling (from a distance), "It's okay, he's/she's friendly!" We would have to protect both dogs while calling back, "ours isn't!" We ended up walking our dog at midnight. You shouldn't have to do that, and even though people have the right to feel offended if they want, their offense, in my opinion is unjustified when it is they who are allowing the problem to occur.

Your dog's life depends on the owner's understanding of their dogs behavior. PERIOD!
Not everyone is a responsible pet owner & it is tough 4 those of us that try to be! 😔 My loving Lillie 🐕 is amazing with greeting most humans (big & small), but I was once bit by a stray dog (bc I underestimated what she would do to protect me from a perceived threat)!
So love your dog enough to leash them when out in public with other people & pets, bc they sense different perceived threats then we do. 💯
You don't think it will happen until you are in ER with a painful dog bite from trying to save (2) dogs. 😔🤯💔 Happily, Lillie & the stray were ok, but my hand took awhile to heal!

YES, You are Wrong! If you have an aggressive Pit Bull that is not socialized it is your responsibility to put a muzzle on the dog. It isn't a matter of you learning your Dog's ways - it's a matter of you teaching him yours. You should watch some "Dog Whisperer" Caesar Milan programs. How often do Dogs manage to escape their yards. I invite you to join "Mountain Animals Lost/Found/In Need".

John Bays btw pitties are only aggressive because they have jerk owners. All the ones I have ever known were the sweetest dogs ever
· Reply · 3d
John Bays
Yes they are. They have gotten a bad reputation because of owners who don't deal with the aggression and frequently encourage it - they must be socialized. There are no "Bad Dogs" just irresponsible owners. It isn't too much to ask people to Muzzle an aggressive dog.

You can try to reason with all the wads that think they and their dogs are "spesh-u-al" but It really isn't about your kind consideration or even up for debate at all. We have leash laws because everyone deserves equal protection from the what-ifs in community settings full of unknowns.

I can totally relate -- people let their dogs off-leash, saying "Oh my dog is friendly, don't worry!" -- having no idea that other dogs may not be, and that's why there's a leash law. My dog goes crazy when another is off-leash, and getting harder to control.

I have a dog like that and when I walk him, I put a muzzle on him. It's a soft muzzle and works very well. If someone comes up to him, another dog comes up to, or by him, a deer or other animal startles him, he can't bite. You would be better off doing that than asking other people to make sure they leash their dogs...you have control over one animal, and that is yours. You may not like it, but it's up to you. In the long run, it protects both you and your dog.

My dogs went nuts trying to 'protect' me and to prevent the little dog from getting decimated, I had to throw myself on my dogs. No you're not wrong. All dogs should be on a leash. Dog owners should ask if it's ok to approach, to make sure your dog is friendly with other dogs. You should slowly introduce your dog to other dogs. Maybe they need training. Good luck
