Quicksales (nee OZtion) did not seem to fare well with the change of management (from my own, personal experience) and the Trading Post has conceded a significant impact from online competition - such as eBay.

So in this new move, I have to ask ... will the Trading Post become the Trading Ghost?

I would hope not, as I am keen to support Aussie business - so long as they deliver - but my fears remain.

Yes, I have really been missing his contributions here.

I believe he needs a bit of an internet break, though, so I have told the sniffer dogs to stand down.

Shyer, the more I buy online, the less frequently I look to eBay as the first port of call... In fact, often I won't look at eBay at all.

One of the most annoying things is when searching for a title, and an eBay link comes up in the search results, but the link leads to a nothing page - a page in which one is cheerfully informed that no such title is listed on eBay.

I really do not want to have my time wasted by a link to nowhere. (I'm so insanely busy that I really do hate those dead-end links - they are a drain on my very limited time because they infiltrate every search result.)

Countessa, I'm guessing you're using a global search engine like Google for that sort of behaviour - which is to be expected when a lot of the listings on eBay are rather transient.  Google cache will hang on to these for a somewhat inappropriate amount of time.

I would like to say the solution to this is to go to eBay and use the eBay search, since it will be operating on current data only and you won't get the 'dead link' problem.

I would like to say that, but I cannot in all good conscience.

While the 'dead link' problem would be averted, you would be at the mercy of the vagaries of the eBay search algorithm - and a recent search exercise I undertook on eBay using 4 good, solid keywords yielded entirely irrational and inconsistent results.

Now on that score, there may be some who might want to 'coach' me on how to use the eBay search effectively - but my response is this: Using the search is not the objective, finding the desired item is.

The more convoluted the mechanism, the more difficult it is to drive.  When the search engine deviates away from the literal search arguments and starts 'thinking' for you, it is absolutely certain that there is going to be a significant percentage of searches that are going to be entirely misinterpreted.

I truly fear for anyone who knows exactly what they want and tries to drive the eBay search when the search engine thinks it knows what you meant ... not what you actually typed.
