Title: Forum was down
Post by: *CountessA* on January 23, 2010, 04:49:22 PM
Dear members,

My apologies for the last hour or so of the forum being down. I'm informed that this site is being "seamlessly migrated to our new self-healing cloud infrastructure, Ferrari server. Ferrari server operates off clustered Core i7 Nehalems utilizing Enterprise iSCSI SANs. This means that your sites will be on a fully redundant setup, fault-tolerant against any hardware issues or component failures. In fact, 10 hard drives could die and multiple cloud machines can crash and your sites will still be up and running."

I think perhaps "seamlessly" wasn't quite the right word!

At any rate, after the migration has completed, we should be a great deal more secure from this happening again.

Struth Countess, I don't understand that language. Reads good though.

Put simply - there are multiple computers and multiple disk drives that duplicate everything several times over - and are set up so they keep chugging away happily even if one or two or six of them die.  So you will never know if there is a problem.

Your desktop computer is likely to have a RAID controller - which means you can have multiple disk drives that all hold the same information.  This is good when that data is critical and a disk drive dies - the other(s) still have the data intact.  But since you only have one 'processor', if that fails, you're dead in the water.  You'll still have your data safely tucked away, but won't be able to get to it until the 'processor' is fixed or the disks swapped over to a working machine.

I received numerous reports that it was down for about five hours. By the time I was up and in front of a computer, it was working - so I will put it down to teething problems with the migration to the new servers.

The migration to the new servers gave us another hiccup.

The ISP has cached the new DNS information now, and we should be all right from here on in.

My apologies for this very frustrating hiatus.

Oh. I thought that could have been the problem, lol. I haven't got a clue what it all means.

Were the migrants at fault. Were they illegals?

What's a tapeworm got to do with it? hold on, a hiatus is a hernia, isn't it?
Title: Re: Forum was down
Post by: *CountessA* on January 29, 2010, 10:33:06 PM
I'll try to explain it in every day terms.

The actual address of the website changed, by being moved to another server. Because of that, website browsers couldn't find where it was any longer.

It's equivalent in a way to hopping into a taxi and telling the driver to take you to a particular hotel, only to find when you get there that there's nothing but rubble. You rub your eyes, and insist, "But this is where it was! I've got the address right here on this card!" The taxi driver doesn't know where the hotel is... and only when finally a correct Yellow Pages is released can you find the hotel in its new location.

When the hosting server of the website caches the Domain Name Server information, that's the equivalent of publishing the new information. FINALLY web browsers can access the site again!

Some members have reported continuing problems, which I think may be related to their needing to flush their computer's DNS cache.

There's a page which explains how to do this here (http://www.techiecorner.com/35/how-to-flush-dns-cache-in-linux-windows-mac/).

1. Click onto Start.
2. Click onto Run.
3. Type the following command:
    C:\>ipconfig /flushdns
4. You may also need to clear your browser cache (Tools>>Clear Recent History - and make sure you tick "Cache").
5. You may then also need to restart your computer.
6. Then try accessing here again.

Can I ask that anyone who knows of someone having difficulty accessing this site passes on this information, and lets me know whether it's solved the problem?

Thank you.

I haven't had any problems logging in here....but I have had a few problems with viewing pics.

Anything bigger than a smilie...and I get the pizza box with a red cross!]

Even if I right click/show picture....it still keeps coming up as the pizza box.

Never had this problem before...except occassionally with extra big pics.....so was wondering if I need to change something on my computer to fix this?

It could possibly be a DNS cache situation, Roo.

This whole migration thing has certainly caused some upheaval...

Dear members,

I've continued to receive reports that some people are unable to access the forum.

I know this must be very annoying.

I would like to ask those who have had problems to run the following commands (from Start >> Run)

ping ozroundtable.com and traceroute 209.51.141.170

Please contact me with the result.

Well - we're back .... I hope.

I first observed this forum as being dead in the water at approximate 05:06 this morning (18/02/2010) - and back now at 22:52 (or maybe a little before then).

I know the Countess has been tearing her hair out with this outage as we were not the only site affected.

Let's hope we don't get a repeat of today - EVER!!

G'day Brum6y. Ripper we are back. Apparently a number of sites were down, all serviced by the same server, whatever that means. It sounds good though. sounds like I know what I'm talking about (I don't)
Title: Re: Forum was down
Post by: *CountessA* on February 18, 2010, 11:21:50 PM
I'm wary about emailing all our members with a notification that we're back up, though - because I still don't know what's actually caused the outage.

I've been informed that the problem was apparently the datacentre - but that was about seven or eight hours ago, and I have not had a more recent update.

It seems to me that the site is still loading more slowly than it should be, so I will wait until I get a definitive answer before rushing in to notify our members.

Okay - I've had the latest update from the server's technical support.
Quote

Hello Ingrid,

First of all let me start off with an apology. Our engineers at the DC have been working tirelessly for the past 24 hours to bring back the server online. We are extremely sorry for this catastrophe. Everything will be up by this evening. We would like to provide 3 months of free service in compensation for this extended downtime. Please send a ticket to billing once your sites are back online. Thank you for your loyalty and we assure you we are doing everything we can to bring everything back up as soon as possible.

--------------------------------------------------------
Best Regards,
[...] Senior Systems Administrator

I am going to email all members with an apology and ask for their patience a little longer. You can still post here in the meantime, but there may well be intermittent problems. At least half of the sites on the server are still down completely, so as frustrating as it is to find the problems on this forum, we're at least not totally in the dark.

Very, very sorry about this.
Title: Re: Forum was down

Hello Countessa, I don't think any of us need an apology from you.  I don't see how any of it could be your fault.  We all know that you are doing your utmost to get everything back in order.  If it's annoying us, then the assumption is its annoying you alot more....

The admission from the Senior Systems Administrator that it's THEIR fault not yours covers all, IMO.

Please note Countess. Yib's Pepsi Max & Pups is a much better compensation idea. Let the servers technical support manager know, if you could.

Helllooooo.  I'm not really here.  You see I can't get in via my normal TPG provider.  I wonder if my fixed IP is blocked.

However, I am now attached via a Virgin dongle having turned the firewall off to allow it and I can get in.  Haven't been able to for days.

Still can't if I go via the normal way.

Too strange......

Apparently eBay was down everywhere on Friday.  ;D

I have been having problems and although I did manage to get into the forums here this evening, there were still problems. I looked up the instructions for Vista and did the following (which is what countessa advised) but these were the steps for Vista).

Here is how to fix that corrupted DNS cache in vista.

1. Click the Microsoft Vista Start logo in the bottom left corner of the screen
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. RIGHT-click on Command Prompt
5. Select Run As Administrator
6. In the command window type the following  ipconfig /flushdns and then hit Enter
7. You will see the following confirmation:

Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

I was also having trouble with my bank site, but all appears back on track now....Fingers crossed ;D

Definitely no need to apology, countessa ;D ;D ;D It is the wonderful world of technology and we have to grin and bear it....or, in my case...panic

Finally able to access OzRT after more than 4 days...

This is the latest from the server company's president:

Quote
A Message from Ronny.

What a week.. I cannot begin to express my sorrow at what transpired this past week.

At 12PM Wednesday afternoon we began to experience high load issues on our Cloud Infrastructure which hosted our Ferrari server. By 1PM sites were going offline due to the extreme iowait times. Iowait is basically a bottleneck in data transmission from the storage device, the SAN. In essence, data was being delivered so slowly to the server that no web pages were capable of being served. We diagnosed the cause of this problem to lie with the clustered 40TB iSCSI SAN provided by our datacenter (using Hewlett-Packard StorageWorks). The datacenter spent precious hours troubleshooting it to no avail. By midnight that night, they determined it was an issue with our cloud, that we were sending mass amounts of data to their system. We knew this was not true... we host regular clients with dyanmic yet normal content. By this time the downtime was already unacceptable. They claimed that we were the only client having issues. I spoke with the CEO of our datacenter and convinced him to move us to another cloud.
By morning, the migration was complete yet the problem persisted. We were forced to immediately switch all of our customers to traditional boxes running 15K RPM SA-SCSI Drives. The sites were restored from backups that were a day (by that time 2 days) old. However our sync of the latest, fresh data from the SAN was being transferred at crawling speed due to the iowait issues. By this time the datacenter techs informed us other customers were having similar issues. Friday morning Hewlett-Packard technicians were in the datacenter troubleshooting and diagnosing their SAN.

As of this moment we still have no had an explanation from our DC what the issue was, or if it is fixed. The last we heard was that there may have been faulty drives in part of the SAN - coincidentally the part of the SAN that we were stored on.

This has been an arduous journey. Many members of our staff stayed after and even stayed for double shifts, without even asking for overtime, during the past few days. It makes me happy to know that we have staff who care so much. Phil and I have not left the office since Wednesday night. We are completely invested in our clients, and it breaks our heart to see so many of our clients websites go down.

We know how important your websites are, and how stressful this entire situation has been. I know that we have lost the trust of many of our clients, but we will continue to be here and build back your trust, one day at a time. For those of you who inevitably decide to seek an alternate provider, please send in a ticket for a full refund of February. You should not need to pay for a month when service was not met. We accept full responsibility for what happened, and we'll also hold your account for as long as you need to move data off of it. For those clients who decide to stay with us, we thank you and appreciate you from the bottom of our hearts. We promise we will not let you down again, ever.

The clients who have decided to stay with us, please don't forget to send in a ticket to Billing to have the hosting charges for the next 3 months waived.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to email us, call us, or send in a support ticket.

Some sites on the server are still affected, so I'm going to store members' email addresses offline as well as here, so that I can at least contact you to give you an update in the event of the site being down again.

Thank you for your patience; I still have a lot of sorting out to do to get in touch with the other sites that continue to be affected.

Fixed!

Just missing a few avatars now... not all, though.

I can see Tello's, Yib's and Smee's - but no-one else on this page.

Haven't flushed DNS today, but did two days ago when I tried to get in.  No change.  Disable TPG and plugged in virgin dongle.  Instant access.
Title: Re: Forum was down
Post by: *FluffyDuckee* on February 22, 2010, 07:09:27 PM
OK, just to prove my point again and make sure I wasn't going mad...

1.  I disable virgin dongle  (and I was successfully in the RT using it)
2.  I enabled TPG wireless access
3.  I tried to access the RT.  Result?  Link broken, cannot access.
4.  Flushed DNS which returned a successful message
5.  Rebooted and powered down laptop
6.  Restarted laptop which auto logged into TPG access.
7.  No access to RT.  Link broken
8.  Disabled TPG
9.  Enabled virgin dongle
10. Bingo I am back in.

Oh and Yib, I haven't cleaned my pond yet, I was too busy doing this stuff.  Am I going to get a spanking?

Lol I just realised you told me to flush my DNA.  Maybe that is where I am going wrong.  How do I do that?  Do I become another creature rather than a duck?

*Waves to Birdie*

Great to see you too Mum.  Yes this is a great site and we have wonderful people here.  What has been great is that as soon as the site comes up everyone seems to know and jumps in.  That's dedication for you.

We are also very fortunate that the poor Countess has been willing to work her poor fingers to the bone.  (Just don't scream to much Tessa or you will ruin your voice)

Mum, I just love your avatar, but I'd have to say it does make me feel a little dizzy if I look at it too long.

Fluffy ;D Have a look at the below. The last inclusion is for Vista users. We do not see "Run"

A copy of a post from Countessa.
Some members have reported continuing problems, which I think may be related to their needing to flush their computer's DNS cache.

OR... this is for Vista users

Here is how to fix that corrupted DNS cache in vista.

1. Click the Microsoft Vista Start logo in the bottom left corner of the screen
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. RIGHT-click on Command Prompt
5. Select Run As Administrator
6. In the command window type the following and then hit enter: ipconfig /flushdns
7. You will see the following confirmation:

Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

NB

Also do steps  4, 5 and 6 as per Countessa's advice.

Perhaps TPG have detected the site as being dodgy and have just shoved it out into the cold - all automatically.

I would expect there would be a 'recheck' at some time and they'll work out it's ok now - then you'll be right.

If you have the time and inclination, I'd be tempted to ring TPG tech support and tell them your problem - and that the site had experienced problems over the last few days, but is back up and running.  I'm guessing that if you get the right guy, he should be able to fix the problem by forcing a refresh at the right place.

That's if it doesn't happen automatically by the time you get through ... if they're anything like Optus..............

It is a curious fact.  The other night the only people who could access this forum were me, Smee and Lacey.  Noone else could get in.

Now not one of us can access the forum (in my case via my usual way that I accessed the other night, TPG) and everyone else who couldn't get in back then now can?  I have flushed DNS more times than my toilet so it isn't that.  Cache too, but that doesn't hold up anyway because I am using the same computer and IE to access once I activated my dongle with another IP.

So it would appear that the restriction for some is IP specific in some way.  ?????

If this wasn't so seriously frustrating
i'd make more dongle jokes
but I will (almost) refrain
cause I think senses of humor are being tested somewhat during this phase of site 'issues' for the forum!

Yes..And a keel hauling as well? Is ubbie in? ;D

It must terrible for the countessa. And it is hard when people know the forum is up and nothing they know how to do will gain access.

I tried different browsers and cleaned, flushed, restarted, chewed Mentos and muttered curses each time I was whipped away when I had gained access, and all that did was give me a sugar overdose and cause OH to keep earphones glued to his head--- Not a bit of help :shakehead:

TPG is simply my broadband internet service provider Birdie.

I am having copious discussions with the server people. They too are tearing out their hair. They've shown me screenshots of the sites being up, and yet Tello cannot get in... I can get in sometimes, but at other times it's down for me (on several different computers, and on my iPhone)...

Poddy! Is there a backbone issue at the moment? Could that be contributing to the problem? What's going on? Save our hair...!

Countess, We have had a couple of recent issues getting in too, the last being yesterday evening. "Server Not Known". Saved email links led to the same message. All appears good at the moment.

The really distressing thing is that other sites with dedicated IP addresses on the same cluster are also having problems (and they're commercial sites).

When I run a traceroute on them, the result is "unable to resolve target system name". It IS enough to make Kojaks of us all.

Gr8 said he was taking time to attend to real life.

After his house cleaning exercise, it seems he had a lot of stuff (books) he needed to clear out and I believe he is focussing on that.

At a guess, I'd say the timing of the problems here would have been a blessing in disguise for him - since it took away the temptation to 'just duck in and say hello' ... so he's likely gotten stuck into the things he said he had to do.

I'm sure he'll be back ... when things are under control.
