Can they invent more taxes? Oh yes they can....thoughts?
I for one would be VERY vocal in oposition to such a thing.. are we all thet complacent and apathetic as one of the most heavily taxed Countrie sin the world that we will just accept these new taxes daily?
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/08/13/2654463.htm (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/08/13/2654463.htm)
The Federal Government is being urged to consider taxing drivers based on how far they drive.
It is just one proposal contained in a new paper commissioned as part of Ken Henry's review of the tax system.
The paper also recommends that truck drivers should be charged more to reflect the damage their heavier vehicles do to roads.
One of the report's authors, economics Professor Harry Clarke from LaTrobe University, says the main proposals are to levy congestion charges on vehicles in urban settings.
"[The aim is] generally to try to get to the point where we're charging people for the actual damage and costs of using roads - rather than fixed charges that are independent of the way they use roads," Professor Clarke said.
"The technology exists now; telemetric devices, or essentially boxes that are inserted in vehicles. These can provide information for commercial trucking fleet operation, or they can provide information to regulators."
The Government would be able to track where drivers went and how far they drove, but Professor Clarke denies this creates any privacy concern.
"That information would only accrue to the device and the user of the device would possess the information, but essentially the Government would be able to work out the charges that were associated with different types of use of roads, yes," he said.
Professor Clarke also says it would be a good thing if trucking companies passed on the costs of increased levies to consumers.
"If trucking companies are using low-durability roads and imposing lots of costs on the community in terms of maintenance costs, then it means that the price of goods that they are transporting should be higher than they are," he said.
"They're not reflecting their full social costs. So the market wouldn't fail at all in that situation; that would be the sort of outcome that you'd hope with these charges.
"The idea of charging on the basis of weight is to encourage heavy-vehicle users of roads to use the roads sensibly; to use the most durable roads, or to make good economic decisions when they come to use roads that are of less than optimal kind of durability."
It makes my Blood boil...oh yes they hint that other taxes may be dropped in lieu but we all KNOW thats utter BS, and that the old fees would creep back in so we would have to pay more ultimately like they do with every other "replacement" tax.
-
Lisa,
To my way of thinking the taxes are a by product of the real agenda, which is implanting tracking devices into vehicles.
Already lots of pets are being implanted with tracking devices "in case they get lost".
That little ploy is to make the next step more acceptable and implant those devices in people.
People are already carrying around tracking devices voluntarily i.e. mobile phones, credit cards.
At least you can turn off the mobile and not use the credit card, so other ways have to be found that can not be turned off.
SUX huh?
I make it my duty to live the mobile at home and to use cash hehehehe,
-
HEY! That's an American idea!!!!
How'd yer guys hear about that?
One thing's for certain: if those morons try coming around me, I'll give them something to track......out of my guns!

Hey Tello,
Your Aussification is comming along quite nicely ;D

It is just one proposal contained in a new paper commissioned as part of Ken Henry's review of the tax system.
This person.... Ken Henry..... How about we send him a truck load of laxatives? The poor misguided ba$tard obviously has too much time on his hands. Considering that his 'suggestion' has given everybody a serious dose of the $hit$..... what goes around....should assist with his congestion concerns.
The paper also recommends that truck drivers should be charged more to reflect the damage their heavier vehicles do to roads.
Aren't we still paying the 3+3+3 that was only due to run for 3 years? (introduced 30 years ago)
"The technology exists now; telemetric devices, or essentially boxes that are inserted in vehicles. These can provide information for commercial trucking fleet operation, or they can provide information to regulators."

Well, actually - there are privacy concerns here. It was argued that employers had the right to install these devices in their drivers' vehicles. But, since when did the government become the employer of every user in this country - and have the right to self declare that they should have access to personal useage information of this kind? 1984 - 25 years late!! (Help Countess!!)
Professor Clarke also says it would be a good thing if trucking companies passed on the costs of increased levies to consumers.
Now this bloke..... well, no amount of laxatives is going to clear his issues! Hey, Tello, you got any spare exocet missiles over there brother?
"They're not reflecting their full social costs.
Is that a fact - or are these people simply reflecting their sociopathic strengths?
Yep - you're quite correct Lissa - they are a bunch of wonkers!!

Tello, you got any spare exocet missiles over there brother?
Sorry.
Fresh out.

Hey Tello. I read that the US army is phasing out the Barret 50 cal sniper rifle & modifying existing M24 rifles to fire the more powerful .300 Winchester Magnum round. A real beauty I believe, with incredible accuracy & hitting power over great distance.
If the US army decides to have a garage sale & sell of the Barret 50 cal can you get me a couple?
-
I'll ask around.
-
ubbrd...
I remember reading that the .50's were a good sniper rifle out to 1700 Mtrs. Normal .308 data tells me that I can keep a 180g bullet supersonic out to 1150 metres.... how compares the .300 magnum round?

G'day r3830 re Reply #12.
I am told that a Canadian armed forces sniper using one of the rifles I referred to took out a terrorist in the hills in Afganistan at 2 kilometers (chest shot). I don't know if this is true but the Canadian forces snipers have an excellent reputation.

That'll do Yib.... coordinates are: Lat 35.27 Deg. S Lon 149.12 Deg. E = CANBERRA!

I saw a pic with a terrorist's head taken clean off....I believe the shot was taken by sniper from an elite snipe squad at a distance of over 1.2 kilometers...too graphic to post here...

Hey Yib. What's the duck doing at your Acme Destructo heavy artillery piece?
Ducks on an hourly rate.....
-
Yep. I have those photos. the shooter was an American armed forces sniper & he had to take a head shot as the terrorist was wearing a body vest packed with explosives & he was in an area with a lot of people. He took the head shot as he didn't want to risk hitting the explosives. brilliant shot. He used a Barret 50 cal.

This is such a meretricious plan. Shall we start taxing people on "pay-as-you-take-up-space" as well, depending on one's shape? "Pay-as-you-breathe" tax? If you breathe more heavily, you will be taxed more? (Woe betide anonymous callers who have heavy breathing down to a fine art, hmm?) The Eating Tax, based on how much you eat? The Online-Usage Tax, based on how much time you spend online?
How about pay-how-much-smugness-you-have tax? I like that idea. Let's go with that. If you're a smug smeghead, you pay more.
Good lord. It's ridiculous. Delivery of items is necessary to the functioning of our consumer society... What about people who happen to live 20 kilometres from a supermarket rather than have one within walking distance? Silly - a silly, silly plan.

It didn't happen.
Yet.

In alll sincerity, I do wonder at The decline of the Aussie fighting spirit generally speaking, there are indeed small pockets of people that will not wallow in Apathy, but more and more I see it everyday.
A friend the other day stated, I am So angry..I asked why..she related how she had purchased a product, took it home and it was faulty, she took it back to the store and asked for a refund, they said NO as it was on sale and there were no refunds, she then returned home $70 out of pocket and miserable, she lamented to me that such is life in this day and age "what can you do.. sigh".
I spluttered with disbelief..I had to wait a moment as the blood had rushed to my head in pure aggravation at the "They told me it was so, and therefore I must comply" attitude.
I said NO this is wrong, a sa;le item MUST be replaced or refunded if faulty, this is the law..no she said they told me it isn't.. I again repeated the law...
Nahh she said let it go.. whats the point.....ARGHHHHHHHHHHH Bloody Apathy I muttered under my breath.
Tell you what i said, give me the reciept and the item as they are no good to you, and I will show you WHY it's important not to be apathetic, she agreed.
I printed out the law governing sales.. took the item and receipt and went directly to the store, I explained I was there for the friend that had purchased previously and had errouneously been told there was no refund due to it being a sale item despite being faulty.
The manageress sneered and said no error Dear, and flapped a hand at a sign stating No returns on Sale items...I took a breath and said.
Yes dear, I see your sign, however Ma'am that is at odds with the law, I then lay the printout of the LAW in front of her and pointed to the highlighted exerpt :
Under the Fair Trading Act 1999, consumers are entitled to refunds if:
* an item is faulty and the buyer did not know about the fault at the time of purchase
* the item is not fit for purpose, or
* the item does not match a description or sample the buyer was given.
A business may offer to repair, exchange or provide a credit note instead of a refund, but the buyer has the right to demand a refund if the product does not meet the conditions of purchase.
This includes "sale items".....
She screwed up her nose and stared at the paper.. I then followed up by saying that the store could be fined for not complying with fair trade practices and possibly forced to cease trading if enough complaints were received.
She gave me the death stare, snatched up the receipt and mashed the register almost hurling the refund (cash) at the counter and said fine..then turned and walked away after tossing the ammended receipt after the money.
I smiled sweetly said thankyou kindly and walked out of the store.
I returned to my friend who to my utter disbelief after her initial joy at having her funds returned said..
I appreciate what you have done, but honestly I wouldnt have bothered..too much hassle....
It made me feel like weeping.
-
Good going Liisa. Your only mistake was not deftly delivering a head butt to the bridge of the sales persons nose as punishment for being so ignorant.
-
Hey r3830. I want one. No arsenal would be complete without one of those super duper air rifles.

Yibida. I'll keep my eye out for that game, looks good.

If you want a nice FREE *gasp yes free* FPS (First person Shooter) it's called Battlefield Heroes -
WARNING it IS very addictive.
Do not be put off by the *Cartoonesq* appearance, it's GFX are actually quite rich with great depth and more realistic ingame, the pics make it look flat, it does require skill and tactics and best of all it is Fun fun FUN, you can choose abilities/attributes as you level, you can be a Sniper (Commando)*bloody hard* a Gunner (self explanatory) a soldier/medic.
Guide here:
http://www.battlefieldheroes.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=40490 (http://www.battlefieldheroes.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=40490)
Its not a big download, all you need is an EA account (easy peasy) and all on the game site just follow the steps.
You play in teams of 10 so 10 V 10, Royals (British) against Nationals (German) the game is in Open Beta, so there are a few little bugs, nothing major, rarely occuring, and simply rectified.
Did I say it's addictive..OH and you can play on the same team as people you know simply by adding them to the ingame friends list and joining their map.
The Maps are in sets of three games, then the map cycles to a different map zone and so on, so your not playing the same map over and over and over.
You can drive tanks, jeeps, fly planes or go on foot, and yes all but the jeeps have weapons you can use on board, the planes especially take skill to master, if you want grunt and firepower, I suggest gunner if you want to hide and snipe, then go commando.
Try it, I have not had anyone say they did not like it and they are still addicted lol

Well done Liisa!
But isn't it sad that things have progressed to a point where you have to argue for everything! Is it apathy - or confusion - or the avoidance of embarrassment - limited knowledge and understanding of consumer rights?
There was a time when things were so much simpler - where had you returned a faulty product..... no issue.. it would have been replaced. Stores had reputations to uphold - which were matters of serious importance to them. Not everyone was pre-judged as a potential thief or scammer, and there was very real value in a handshake. Oh - and the customer was always right!
Now - were heavilly influenced by legislation and regulations.... and just keeping up with these things is quite an arduous task. The power of the bluff (as you describe in the no refunds policy) reigns supreme, and people are exploited. But - it's called progress...... which in many ways has actually devalued us in many ways IMO. The customer is generally wrong - and people (customers) are often treated with over-enthusiastic suspicion and disrespect.
I appreciate what you have done, but honestly I wouldnt have bothered..too much hassle....
And..... how many times have you heard that expression! Perhaps apathy - but also perhaps, a fear of the unknown!
-
By the way good people..... a link now exists for firearms discussion. Perhaps we can save the Countess the trouble of splitting this thread - and keep Liisa's thread intact. :)

Liisa, I absolutely understand and admire your views.
My one serious pet hate...... Have you ever been through a drive-thru at McDonalds - or Hungry Jacks, ordered your things and left, only to get home and find that your order is short? (Absolutely hate this situation!) Options are - to return to the place and complain..... or go without yourself so that someone else doesn't miss out...... or contact the place. (provided they are not on a 1300 service which will allow your goods to naturally decompose while you're waiting to speak with someone) Or throw your hands upin despair, until next time, when the same thing happens again!
My solution: I don't use drive-thrus any more. At least if I go into the shop, I can see what is being packed and spot any potential disappointments at home. It is about trust.... or the lack of it in my case that I do this.
I suppose - as opposed to being "shafted by the masses" - we all have to do what we can in preparation to prevent something that shouldn't occur.
Frustrating: YES
Worth an argument: ABSOLUTELY

Liisa, we're sisters under the skin - I feel the same way about shops or businesses that behave in this way.
I had a similar experience (not with someone else's purchase, but mine - involving a phone battery). The battery did not hold a charge. I tried to charge it fully several times, but the rotten thing would show that it was fully charged but the charge didn't even last a day. After 14 days, I was confirmed in my suspicion that this was either a Chinese fake or a reconditioned battery (and it had been sold as a new battery, from one of those little stall things in shopping centres). Of course I had the receipt, but when I looked at it, I saw that it said no refunds, no exchanges except within 1 day of purchase. I suspected I might have a bit of a problem getting a refund for what was clearly not fit for the purpose for which I'd purchased it, so I too printed that excerpt from the TPA. I carefully placed the excerpt on the counter, explained that the battery did not hold a charge and was clearly not new and clearly not functioning as per the specifications of the item, and that I required a full refund.
The seller saw that I wasn't going to be fobbed off with the disclaimer (which was illegal), and it only took around 3 minutes (mostly explanation and reiteration from me) before she handed over the refund.
It IS worth the hassle. It definitely is. We have legislation in Australia to PROTECT CONSUMERS - and to stop businesses from behaving unconscionably. If we don't use the protection of those laws, we don't deserve them. I know that sometimes I let small infringements slide... but I hope that's a matter of judgement and an act of mercy rather than thinking "It's just not worth it". I don't believe in behaving like a greedy "me me me me my rights" lunatic - but neither should we allow ourselves to be taken advantage of.
Well done, Liisa!
-
Countess...I think that seeing as Tello is a yank...the US Paypal rules would apply.
I'm pretty sure they are different to ours.

Roo, good point! And I did keep that in mind... and made sure I quoted from PayPal.com rather than PayPal.com.au. It's interesting - there are differences, but there is still that differentiation between Buyer Protection and Buyer Complaint policies.

Now this is a basic breakdown, and will vary between families, some families have two cars, some don't drink or smoke.
As you can see, the taxes paid on a basic income where you take home $600 per week is aprox: $284.00
I did this to show an idiot that thinks people on a basic wage don't pay enough tax. Drivers are allready taxed to the hilt, and the tax on petrol ensures those that drive longer distances pay more.

I am with the WTF thought on this.
We pay a registaration fee that is supose to cover roads.
we also pay a petrol tax so we are already paying a PAYG tax on road use.
The more you drive the more you pay.
The more powerful your car the more you pay.
Talk about double and triple dipping

We do pay tax on so many things, agreed.
Tello, I think we should split this topic to try and give you some options with the PayPal situation.

Why me? You make it sound like I'm the Lonesome Soul in the PP wilderness.
How about all the other losers?
Go ahead, split! Tack it at the top.
It won't do much good. Nobody reads these boards anyway....
