Anyone else out there noticed a big increase in the amount of 'phishing' emails over the past couple of weeks. I seem to be getting them on a daily basis at the moment, sometimes a couple a day.
They're supposedly coming from banks (but not really) that I'm not associated with and Paypal. The Paypal ones said that my account had been restricted due to unsuccessful log in attempts.
Just one of those really annoying little things in life.

Strange that you mention this. My other half has been receiving Combank emails asking her to sign in and collect $500 (x2) and $320.18 (x1). (CUSTOMER SERVICE SURVEY) Big messge on the netbank website about this. The one from Paypal may be a concern..... isn't that the message you get after three unsuccessful login attempts? Possibility of someone attempting to access your account....unsuccessfully?

I was a little concerned about the Paypal ones but they looked to be as real as the others. I have had them from two different banks so far, but I just received a different one now, from 'netbank' (no bank) from msgcenter@webssl.com

Donna has received them from:
Comonwealth (note incorrect spelling) ("CS Survey" and "login to check details and verify email address" (noreply = Boot off netbank)
and also Westpac.
Appears to be some blanketing happening.
But when you think about it........ any bank wishing to give away it's hardearned to a customer... :rofl:
Maybe an applicant in the joke list!

My work email has been hit with the Commonwealth Bank emails, and now also St George and SA Govt ones. I have got a few on my home email account (through ISP provider) but never received any phishing emails on my gmail accounts.

Police investigate new phone banking scam
FEDERAL Police are investigating a new type of scam that operates a fake bank call centre using an Australian phone number.
The call centre has automated computer voices to dupe callers into providing their credit card numbers.
It is linked to a large email scam, or phishing, campaign that imitates official messages from the Commonwealth Bank.
"This is the first time the AFP has seen the use of fraudulent call centres with Australian phone numbers in phishing scams," an AFP spokesperson said.

Thanks for bringing this up, Lilly. I think everyone's noticed this dramatic increase in phishing emails.
If people consistently junk these emails and never click onto email links OR trust any email claiming to be from a bank but addressing them as "Dear member", we'll see the problem subside to some extent, I think... I hope.

There are also some that want to try and appear genuine by quoting a part of an account number... the silly thing is they quote the STARTING numbers - which will be identical for, literally, millions of accounts.
If any REAL such reference is made, then they should quote the ENDING numbers - as they will be a more reliable indicator.

Bank warns of Russian SMS scam
The Commonwealth Bank has warned its customers to be on the look-out for a scam that asks people to provide account details.
People are being contacted by SMS or by phone and asked to provide their credit card account number and security code.
Customers of other banks have also been affected.
Commonwealth Bank spokesman Steve Batten says the scammers are believed to be based overseas.
"We've identified that its coming out of Russia or somewhere in Eastern Europe," he said.
"The Australian Federal Police is working with their international counterparts, but we have managed to close down a number of these phone numbers, so hopefully a number of these customers and consumers generally should be less bothered by these scams."
Mr Batten says banks do not contact customers asking for personal or banking details.
"We'd just like to remind consumers generally that financial institutions don't contact them via email, via SMS, via phone, asking them to enter the account details, update their PIN numbers or provide personal details about them," he said.

I have seen every type of baiting.. from telling you, threatening you with violence (wasn't very convincing, though), offers, discounts, account suspension, legal action ... through to very well disguised fakes.
I just get annoyed nowadays and move it to my spam folder.
