Sounds like Prototyping - which I was doing over two decades ago.
Then there's getting user feedback... Such a concept! How long has it taken for them to realise dishing out carp from an ivory tower just doesn't work?
The negativity chair. Embarass people into being silent. I used to manage design sessions where the 'negativity' issues were noted on the side and discussion encouraged to explore 'different' ideas. In finalisation of design, these issues were held up against the proposals to ensure there weren't risks or problems waiting to explode in your face.
Not limiting the idea exploration of a brainstorming session is often key to some brilliant innovation - but to forget about the dangers altogether when they present themselves is putting a lot of trust that they will be re-identified further down the track.
At least the speed and efficiency of the tools available these days should enable good results to be found more reliably.
'Should' being the operative word.

i must say viewing a set of videos like that absolutely makes my blood boil, what a self congratulatory team and one of them is raving about how he helped "improve" the search experience and how good it is now ... what a tosser, the ebay search experience sucks, and ebay sucks with each draconian self serving new rule or policy they bring in they punch another nail into the coffin, and as per one of the comments below, now they want the small sellers back, the same ones they screwed so badly in the first place that they will never forget or forgive what was done to them, ebay in microcosm explains a lot of what is wrong with America and rampant capitalism and greed gone mad, real americans hate it as much as we do

I used to love cruising around a little part of ebay...but over the last 12 months they
have ruined everything...can't search without wading through 1000s of pages...well slight exaggeration there....same old gripe anyway..the backyard sellers seem to have gone and mass produced, "can you trust them" sellers have taken their place..I don't go there much anymore." Don't have time to find out how to find anything anymore" ..if that makes sense lol

In my very first introduction to the concept of brainstorming, the class was instructed in the basic rule - no criticism of any idea no matter how ludicrous. The rationale being that one idea will spark another and the cascade effect in a group of people would have the most obscure trigger paths imaginable - but that somewhere in the midst of all the lunacy, a priceless gem could materialize. (Being scribe in these sessions was most stressful.)
Once the session was over, the list of ideas was then reviewed and assessed, with the absurd ones being duly acknowledged and dismissed.
I my first experience, the class was given the task of listing ideas for seating and I remember one of the ideas thrown up was 'ropes' - but I don't recall it making the short list afterwards.
However, with the eBay 'Negativity Chair', I have this vision of the 'ropes' idea being taken up with joy - because you can't be negative about ideas - and made to 'work'. I have no difficulty in believing the end product will be technologically innovative - but whether it services the real need of the end user is the correct question to ask.
I can see the eBay team taking the 'ropes' idea and turning into a noose, where they describe how brilliantly is was conceived and how wonderful it looks - with the presentation team making a big deal of how they explored multiple alternatives to tuck in the end, so it looked neat. You know the old saying "Tying up loose ends"!!
The only thing is that it would be totally useless in achieving the objective - and, mores the pity, they would probably be hard pressed to understand how to use a noose properly...
... and that's a shame in itself.
PS after working some decades in application development, I can honestly say that, from my experience, any serious IT person would cringe at the idea of stepping up and spouting off as these people have. These guys have either had a gun to their head, been brainwashed or lobotomised (before or after implementation is the question).
The only time anybody would do such a thing is in an internal training session for support staff - and even then they'd be feeling vulnerable.

I felt the team presented as uneasy, under stress, overtired, "twitchy" or falsely "bright" ( the go-getter type). Some "dead" eyes there as well. Not at all like team members who , although tired, are stimulated, really confident, and happy to be there. The body language was interesting
The total presentation was poor and uninspiring and that was before I listened to the spiel.
Perhaps they did have a gun to their heads and they need the jobs.
The Garden requires fertilizing.
