Are You a "Closet" shopper?
« on: June 02, 2009, 02:28:38 AM »
Most Aussies are 'closet-shoppers'

Financial times are tough. We may even be in a recession, however that doesn't stop 80 per cent of Aussies from hiding purchases from their loved ones during times of economic crisis.

You could be forgiven for believing that the purse strings should be held a little tighter in the current financial climate, however most of us continue to treat ourselves to life's little luxuries. Eight in every ten Australians are making purchases that they hide from their families, friends or loved ones with more than half of those admitting that they either hid or downplayed those purchases because they feel their loved one doesn't understand the true value of the item.

This new research, comissioned by eBay, also shows that guilt is a driving factor behind retail indiscretions with 30 per cent of Australian's surveyed saying that they felt guilty about their purchases. According to the research, 23 per cent of us feel guilty about exercising a little retail therapy because we believe we're expected to save for a rainy day, or because we're already too far in debt, while more than one in ten of us feels obliged to shop for better value.

eBay spokesperson Sian Gipslis said the global financial crisis and different interpretations of what was actually considered good value, seemed to be the main reasons why consumers were choosing to 'closet buy'. Gipslis said "respondents felt it didn’t seem right to be spending money during a financial crisis as people continue to lose jobs, try to save money or reduce debt."

Althought these findings appear to point towards a trend for frivilous shopping behaviour in Australia, the majority of Aussies surveyed (72%) said the main reason they made the purchase wasn't because they are shopoholics, but because they couldn't resist buying something that offered such good value for money.

Seemingly the majority of our secrect spending sprees occur online at auction sites such as eBay with 65 per cent of the survey respondents saying it offered better value for money, while more than half (53%) found it a convenient and discreet way to shop. Interestingly the research also revealed more men (48%) than women (33%) indulged in online closet buying.

Do you closet shop on eBay? lol
They said there would be cake....and there WAS!

Puts hand up -  ;D

But......................... Not guilty about it - If I can find a bargain I often do and often will delay a purchase because of the price and wait until it is on special.

At the same time if I want it - I buy it and hang the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morning all.

I might be a closet shopper I'm not sure. I'm about to spend $17,000 on a new kitchen, $9,000 on new fancy guttering & $3,000 on new nifty venetian blinds.

I'm under the orders of the Commander in Chief.

I've just spent $5,000 on 2 bows & equipment for archery.

does that make me a closet shopper albeit now a poor one?

Struth Ubb!! u want to adopt me???

I'm a tight wad, well, kind of, after working in the recycled industry for many years I find it really hard to pay $40 for one top...when I know I can go buy a whole new outfit and maybe even a few bits for my daughter with $40...:) lol..okay, I'm scabby and I admit it..!

One thing I would never do though is compromise mine or my daughters living standards or health to save a few bucks...I guess I save where I can and spend when I have to.

Yeah Imp I'm normally a bit of a Scrooge too but, I must obey the Supreme Commander at all times.
I just spent a $100 on Ebay buying a new quiver from the USA, first Ebay buy for months.

Yep,

I am a closet shopper, and I do have the guilts about it.

And yes, I have made a vow to stop it.

Anyone who has a longbow and a compound bow is not just an ordinary closet shopper: he's an ARMED closet shopper.

Not just 1 longbow @ 1 compound bow but, wait for it,

3 longbows, 7 recurve bows & 6 compound bows.

The cat has a machine gun, he only needs one.

I am feeling a little underprivileged.

I don't have any bows - not even a bow tie.
The only arrows I have are on the dashboard of my car and they flash amber.
The only quiver I've had was witnessing Riff and Imp over the weekend.
The only guns I have are a hot melt glue gun and a caulking gun (but I have two of those!)
...
and the only sword I have is a 10" letter opener my daughter brought back from France.

C'mon Horsey, surely you closet shop for something...

Hmm - whipped cream perhaps?

Horse blankets??

I know - night vision goggles?

Multiple horse shoes?

Come on with you - out of the closet!!!

Night vision goggles are the closest - but I've never been tempted (never even looked)... however electronics is my first interest, with computers coming in close behind.

Closet buying might be in the area of DVD movies.  I did go through a stage where I put together a karaoke collection. Still have it - but never had an occasion to roll it out (not sure if I'm game, either).

Otherwise tools - automotive and woodworking.

OK - have spilled my guts... can I go now?

Actually I think I am the Queen duck of closet shoppers.  I love jewellery and have lots of it and always wear matching sets.  This level of acquisition requires clever reconnaissance missions and lay by tactics to get away with it.  he he.

I am not a closet shopper- I am a wayyyyyy out there and visible one!

It used to be jewelry, but as my income level has dropped ( not working the hours I used to) I now tend to be a sucker for clothing... some for me, but mostly for my growing brood of grandchildren....

And if Pumpkin Patch suck me into one more 40% off sale through my emails, I'll be forced to change my isp! (I have got stuff to fit them through the next 3 years!)

I love books. Love them. I have so many books that I don't have room for any more, yet the lure of more books is irresistible...

I love classical recordings. I have an enormous double-faced 10-row HUGE CD shelf unit made by my father (because I couldn't find a large enough unit), and it's... *sob* full. I have a few other CD shelf units to take up the slack.

I thoroughly enjoy collecting a wide variety of DVDs - operas on DVD, thrillers, mysteries, comedy (you knew I'd be saying Monty Python, didn't you?), sci-fi, fantasy, classics, drama, etc. I don't actually have any room left for more...

I love collecting various antiques and collectibles. It's the look of a thing as well as its intrinsic quality that appeals to me. I have a substantial collection of good costume jewellery, and a small collection of genuine jewellery.

I actually need to start collecting... more... space. Yes, that's what I need. Space... in which to collect things. SPACE.

Ah, Countess - your predicament sounds like a challenge that suits my reputation (around those that know me, at least).

I have this knack for 'making things fit' it seems.  Certainly, I have been called upon to organise storage spaces on a number of occasions that has built this reputation - not that I really set out to do so - and it seems my solutions have been useful.

If I ever find my way down south, I might see if I could drop in for a coffee ... I'll bring a box of Baci.
