A new wheelchair from the inventor of the Steadicam

When watching TV or movies, smooth, steady shots are something some take for granted. They somehow move quickly across the floor without any bumps or a sense of vertigo.

As it turns out, viewers can thank Garrett Brown and his groundbreaking invention, the Steadicam, for those shots.

The Steadicam is a lightweight, hand-held stabilizer that gives camera operators a steady hand when on the move to capture shots like Sylvester Stallone's character, Rocky, running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Now standard issue, the Steadicam has evolved beyond film. There's the sky cam, the fly cam and the dive cam.

We met Brown five years ago, on assignment for "CBS Sunday Morning," in the throws of retirement. Now, he's back with a new invention to help people with disabilities move with the same smoothness as his Steadicam.

He calls his latest invention the Zeen.

"What is it that we need? We need a comfortable chair," Brown told "CBS Saturday Morning" co-host Michelle Miller. "We need to not have to ditch that chair to get moving. But hey, let's get to your feet without the whine of motors and slow vvvvvv-- you know, let's get to your feet like a kid."

The 80-year-old came up with the idea a decade ago, while visiting his then-97-year-old dad in care facilities.

"I was watching his pals," Brown said. "And something big seemed to me missing between walkers and wheelchairs. Once you consign yourself to a wheelchair, your feet are not on the ground particularly. You're not upright. Being upright is great for your cardiac, your bone density, your-- your limbic system, your digestive system. And it's particularly valuable for your psychological well-being. To be up among your fellow humans is one of the things we hear most often that they love about this machine."

It took about a decade of inventing and tinkering for Brown and a small team of engineers to get the machine just right. Starting with prototypes, some that look rather ridiculous to Brown now.

"I took an old walker and had this saddle welded onto it just to see what's this feel like," Brown said. "You have to be willing to look fairly goofy and silly when you're testing prototypes for machines that work with humans."

He began marketing them at health care conventions, AARP conferences, anywhere he could reach people with limited mobility. To date he's produced about 100 Zeens.

It's already attracting customers like Anomie Fatale, who relied mostly on her powered wheelchair and rollator.

"With the rollator there is absolutely no support," Fatale said. "All of my energy when I use that requires me to focus on not falling, which is why i can't even use a rollator without assistance."

On the day of our visit, she tried out her new Zeen.

"Not being able to do a sit to stand yourself like that," Fatale said, "it gives you back something that you lost that you miss every day."

Brown noted the Zeen's benefits.

"The instant that we give you this, A. degree of freedom, and, B. autonomy. And that's an important word with this," Brown said. "When you're in it and you're safe, you're on your own."

It's become almost a higher calling. Made even more evident last fall, when Brown traveled to Rome to make a special delivery.

"I was looking at a video report of Pope Francis struggling with mobility," Brown said. "I thought, 'He could use one of these things.'"

The letter he wrote must have been a persuasive one.

"It went around the Vatican," Brown said. "And we were vetted. And didn't we get back a wonderful letter saying, 'Yes, we accept. Thank you very much.'"

"And we heard later it's in his apartment. So this story is unfolding," Brown continued. "No official citing, but, you know, if-- if it's useful to Pope Francis, that would be really, really satisfying."

Brown is hoping to get word out to anyone who can benefit from the Zeen that his new invention is here to help. 

"Inventing is what we do for a good life," Brown said. "Inventing a life is imagining what you want, that is to say, what's missing, and what do you have to do to get there."

I tried a different tactic: I go to email Compose and paste there.
Send.
Open Inbox.

Copy text there.
Try to paste in the OZ box and

SAME ERROR MESSAGE.

I never had this trouble before until several weeks ago when it was spotty,
then escalated to FAIL status. That's where I am now.

It seems that the text, first and 2nd generation, has an invisible,
secret background coding which BLOCKS the pasteing efforts.

A dirty slimey covert virus flocking me up.

I tried this:
Copy a snippet of original and gen 2 text and paste in the OZ box.

Then I type a duplicate, delete the original text, click post
and it works.

There's a nasty eBuggy-Bug riding behind the original text

AND I WANT THIS FIXED!!!!!

BLOOMINGTON, MN – The famous shopping center Mall of America is generating some buzz – but for all the wrong reasons – after a security guard working there ordered a patron inside of the mall to either remove his shirt or leave the property.

Apparently, the shirt (which the security guard alleged was offensive to other patrons) was emblazoned with the phrase “Jesus Saves.”

On January 7th, a yet-to-be-identified man found himself literally surrounded by mall security guards at the Mall of America, with the rendered response in question stemming from the individual’s shirt, which read “Jesus Saves” on the front and “Jesus Is The Only Way” on the back.

Now, in the realm of ostensibly offensive attire that one could encounter in the Mall of America (or any mall, for that matter), a regular t-shirt reading “Jesus Saves” is arguably one of the least offensive garments one could adorn in public outside of a regular t-shirt with absolutely zero graphics or lettering of any kind.

Heck, the Mall of America literally hosts the outlets Hot Topic and Spencer’s, which peddles various shirts and other items that bear ostensibly offensive graphics, phrases, and outright profanity, which employees of the aforementioned stores frequently wear such featured attire while working.

I may be dating myself a bit here, but I remember when Marilyn Manson’s “Antichrist Superstar” shirts were being sold and worn at various malls in the mid-to-late 1990s – and never once did I see or hear about someone being booted from the mall for wearing those shirts (or ones akin to them), largely because it would be pretty hypocritical to boot someone from a mall for wearing a shirt they literally bought there.

But in the Mall of America, it seems that having a shirt that is pro-Christianity is a step too far, at least for these couple of security guards who decided to harass this individual.

In a video from the incident, one of the security guards can be heard telling the man, “Again, I’m giving you a couple of options: you can take your shirt off, and you can go into Macy’s and do your shopping, or you can leave the mall. Okay? Those are your only options right now.”

According to the exchange between the security guards and the man seen in the video, the individual being harassed by the security guards had apparently been given a 24-hour trespass order once sometime in the past for street preaching on mall property. However, the individual was not engaged in such activity on January 7th, as he was reportedly at the mall as a patron and was simply wearing his “Jesus Saves” shirt.

Yet, one of the security guards harassing the man went on to claim that the individual’s shirt is a form of “religious soliciting,” using said excuse to justify the seemingly unnecessary encounter.

“If you want to shop here, you need to take that shirt off…Again sir, it is religious soliciting. There is no soliciting allowed on mall property, which is private property…Just take it off to shop, man. That’s all we want…Yes, you’re walking, wearing that shirt is a form of soliciting and we’ve had guests come up saying they’re offended by your shirt.”

The Daily Mail reached out to the Mall of America for comment on the incident, in which representatives of the mall claimed that “the guest was not required to change his shirt and was allowed to remain at the Mall.” While the above video doesn’t suggest that such an amicable resolution was reached, the video cuts off before additional context is provided outside of the initial encounter.

One wouldn’t have to be a rocket scientist to draw the conclusion that if this man, or any other mall patron, were wearing a “Pride” or even a “BLM” shirt, there’s no way that mall security would surround such an individual and accost them with demands to remove their shirt – even if numerous patrons complained about the attire in the said hypothetical scenario.

There’s reportedly a protest dubbed “Jesus Goes to The Mall” being planned for February 4th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Mall of America, where demonstrators are going to meet on the mall’s main floor outside of the L.L. Bean storefront while wearing shirts with pro-Jesus slogans emblazoned on them.

The episode revolves around the season finale of Jack Donaghy’s (Alec Baldwin) hit reality television show. In one exchange in the episode, Donaghy tells producer Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) the theme of MILF Island.
