Another PayPal email scam
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:49:49 AM »
The subject heading is: Very important message from!

The sender's "name" is PayPal InC (note the capitalised C).

The message is:

Dear Customer,

Please download the attachment and read and complete the form
to avoid suspension.

PayPal protects its community and sometimes we verify
information that we belive does not match credit card billing
address or another IP has been used to login into your paypal
account.

PayPal is an Ebay company.
Thank you.

The attachment is a html file (that is, a web page) named PayPal Security Center Advistory.html. Needless to say, DO NOT OPEN THIS ATTACHMENT!

Repeat: Do NOT open the attachment.

Web pages can include automatic instructions, and since this email is definitely not legitimate, you can be certain that this web page DOES include automatic instructions to install something nasty or give full access to your computer and the information on it.

Some of the source code in the email itself is incorrect - it's been forged (quite badly): for instance, there's an invalid email header field at the top.

The real source host name is "rfc.adsl.spfdma.crocker.net" and the source IP address is 159.250.76.41.

You can forward it to PayPal (to report it) or simply mark it as a phishing attempt/junk and delete it.

Do not... repeat... do not open the attachment.

I got the following one a couple of days ago.  It looks pretty real, but note it says 'paypals.com'.    I initially thought it was Paypal restricting my funds and clicked on the 'log in' link.  Fortunately for me I didn't log in as my virus checker stopped me and told me it was a phising email.  The coloured writing is showing the links in the email. (not links now)

Find out who Greta is working for. She may be an infiltrator.
