Lol...I guess the little Kahuna plan is fine for me....It got shaped about the last 2 days last month.....but is pretty close to what we need most of the time.

I don't think I really want or need anything quicker....I'm slowing down with age....so it all evens out in the end..lol

I am not sure.  We dont even get 3g coverage.  Even though a lot of providers say we do - Mandurah residents know that we dont.

Apparently we are on the fringe - but they are experimenting with increasing the area.  So the local papers say - its a fairly hot issue here at the moment, with all the talk about the NBN.  I checked with my isp and others as to a new plan and speed - apparently it has something to do with the exchange.  (I was not really interested then on why I could not get a faster plant).

Mobile reception is pretty good here, some blackspots but I have no problems where I live.  My son can access the internet from his phone - but not from my house.  But 500 metres north - its fine.

Mandi,

Are we talking about Bigpond NextG internet or wired internet from your exchange?

It looks like you have Wireless coverage and even if it is fringe I design and build NextG outside antennas and I could send you one :)

I was told that my area was a black hole as far as wireless was concerned but I proved them wrong :)

Made about 50 in my area very happy I still cant get a discount though :(

*yawn*

Just woke up.

Now doing it from home is another story...

Of course it could be because Derek Duck (from Ireland, yes he is still here), is hammering the internet as he does all night at the moment.  He usually uses 1.2 gb a day and the other day he used over 4 gb.  Yes, he is a nocturnal duck.  Sleeps all day and comes out at night to suck the juices of the internet.  I think he needs a keel hauling Ubby.

Be aware guys... if optus offer you the extra fast broadband make sure your router supports it, some routers are designed for a max speed... so if you take up the fast optus offer you may not get the full speed your paying for...

If your not using a router and only a modem, then make sure they include the modem in the offer recommended for the extra speed as well.... that way if there's any discrepancy down the track about speeds it will be the hardware they supplied....their always good at blaming your hardware if something isn't working right...

Any idea what the actual speeds are that they are on about? I tried tracking it down on Optus' website and I could not find ONE reference to any numbers....!!

... not even a percentage, couched in a 3 page caveat!

Poddy - I have checked with my isp - cant get adsl2 still and i am on the quickest speed available to my house.

I can get wireless - but they cant guarantee it will be any faster.  I am going to check with the neighbours to see what they have

If you go down the wireless road make sure you get wireless N and make sure all your pc's support N..... it's fastest wireless available.... wireless A-B-G were the predecessors to N...

My kids' plan has over 18Mb/s - does that mean I can take it to 72+Mb/s ?????

Call me cynical... but I kinda doubt that.

Theoretically yes brumby 72mb to 100mb + & more ... but in the real world + our present infrastructure + and dependent on your hardware  = NO

Lacey, the lower the number of Megabytes per second for your download speed (0.43Mb/s for you to Anchorage in the UK as shown above), the slower your connection is.

The upload speed indicates your connection speed to UPLOAD things rather than download. (e.g., uploading an image to Photobucket, or uploading a web page if you're a web designer - that sort of thing).

You can see different speeds for people varying when they test their connection speed with different servers. Your download speed tested with an Adelaide server (700 miles from your location) is virtually the same as your download speed from the UK (7350 miles from your location).

If you look at my connection speed, you'll notice that it's around 19Mb/s when tested on the Sydney server (I'm in Melbourne), but it's around 8.5 or 9.5 Mb/s when testing further distances. http://www.ozroundtable.com/index.php?topic=2969.msg133157#msg133157

Poor Smee has one of the slowest connections, and so, Lacey, do you... *pats Lacey consolingly on shoulder*

Oh Dear!

Wage blowout threat to NBN rollout

JULIA Gillard's pledge to start the rollout of the $43 billion National Broadband Network in regional Australia is in jeopardy because of an acute shortage of skilled workers to build and maintain it in the bush.

Skills shortages in regional areas have prompted warnings of a wages blowout that could drive up the costs of the NBN to taxpayers even further, with every 1 per cent rise in construction labour costs forecast to add a further $1.4bn to the total bill.
