Now, those who have the collecting bug will know what it's like to fall in love with a piece of jewellery with a bit of history behind it. Even if the history isn't known, there's something about the craftsmanship and sense of times gone past which sets apart genuine antique jewellery from modern jewellery.
I've been looking through eBay's antique jewellery. Nothing earlier than Victorian, and some of that is definitely not genuinely antique (nor is it genuine fine jewellery). Some nice pieces, but the prices strike me as on the high side.
What are your experiences about searching on eBay for the genuine stuff? For that matter, what tips have you found effective in sorting out the wheat from the chaff? And have you found online sites which offer better value and range and genuineness?
My (very basic) hint: when searching, remember to include the following search terms: -china -india -thailand -style
(At least in this way you'll weed out some of the worst offenders in the rubbishy results.)

Lots of links, lots of info in spotting quality, what style fits which era etc...different types of findings, clasps and when they came into use etc etc...they also sell antique jewellery....
Tello, Some costume jewellery can be more interesting than fine jewellery....so for my money, I go for both....I have a HUGE costume jewellery collection I've built up over many years an I'm still adding to it.
I'll find you some other links because there's one in particular that is even more informative.

(Thanks for that link, Cupie. As you say, knowledge is power. People buying such items without being informed as to quality or market value are risking a lot of money for poor quality.)

Jewellery. Buying antique jewellery online. If you were looking at engagement rings, for instance, would you look at new designs from a shop, or would you be hunting in antique shops for something old with a bit of history to it? And would you take the risk of buying an antique piece online? Is there much alternative if you're looking at something rare and impossible to get here in Australia?
One interesting thing... When I do a search on eBay.com.au for antique jewellery, the results are VERY very different to a search on eBay.co.uk for antique jewellery.
In neither instance, though, is the range impressive. I'm so tired of seeing vintage jewellery described as antique... and seeing faux jewellery listed in fine jewellery classifications...

There are some incredibly lovely art deco pieces which have artistry, beauty, value and a little bit of history... but they're not old enough for me to think of them as ANTIQUES.
Show me jewellery dating back to the 1600s and I will be sure to be fascinated.

Don't think we hadn't noticed the American penchant for lopping off bits of words. Yes, I've seen Americans spell jewellery as though it were spelt jewelry.

There must be either a seller/collector, or jeweller, with their own B&M or web site selling genuine, antique jewellery, on-line,(perhaps not as far back as the 17th C ). ;D They possibly use auction houses for any very rare/costly items. Or, offer the piece/s to a list of well heeled clients - both here and OS.
It may be worth checking out reputable worldwide Auction Houses, as well as looking for B&M or internet sellers ;D
No, I doubt I would buy something as old and valuable. sight unseen, in an on-line transaction with an unknown seller. I would need to see the piece. And have an expert right there to have a look if the item was precious.
