Mycroft is Sherlock Holmes' older brother by seven years. He first appears in Arthur Conan-Doyle's short story “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter” (1893). Mycroft is said to have even better powers of deduction than Sherlock himself, but lacks the ambition or inclination to pursue investigations.
After Sherlock fakes his own death in “The Final Problem” (1893) it emerges that only Mycroft knew the truth, acting as his confidant and ensuring his rooms and belongings were kept safe for his eventual return. Mycroft Holmes has been portrayed by numerous actors in plays, films and television programs, including by Richard E. Grant and Christopher Lee.
