Here goes - bid on three items from the same seller - bid within what I was prepared to pay
Ad doesn't mention combining postage - but neither does it say no
Cost of item $0.99 each - total cost $1.97
Postage per item - $3.00 each - total cost $9.00
I requested an invoice - and this is the response
Postage on these books - I can send the 3 in satchel for $9-60,
3 separately for $9,
3 in padded bag for $9-05 + $2.45 for padded bag.
I suggest 3 separate as this would be the cheapest. As soon as I have your reply I shall send invoice.
Can someone explain that for me?
I choose the 2 in one envelope - seems strange that 3 seperatly can be cheaper than 3 together!
YOur comments please

It sounds like the seller is trying to have a lend of you. Perhaps it is a bit of profiteering through postage.
What do you estimate the weight & size of each item to be?

I reckon no more than $4-$5 in postage - but it is fine by me - feedback is a tool I can use if needed - I am not fussed at this stage about the cost
But I did send an email worded
******************
Send them combined with NO padded envelope.
Might cost more - but I can then leave relevant feedback
Thank-you
*******************************
Been waiting an hour for a response - no big deal - might have gone to bed - But I would suggest they are 'weighing' up their options
Ebay is no longer the fun it used to be - this is the first time I have bought anything for months, and before then it was a lot longer.
A few cents won't bother me - but I WILL leave relevant feedback - without prejudice!
-
Yep ewok. I haven't bought/won anything on Ebay for ages & I don't even bother looking much now as all the good sellers (here & overseas) have gone. Many now have their own secure web sites & I buy from them.
It's a pity as Ebay was fun once & I use to have a pretty healthy 60 day amount spent for averaging around $3,000. this amount was consistent for several years.
-
Wokie, suggest an Express Post bag that costs $8.50 and it will fit 3 books I would imagine you get them fast as well and they are trackable.
I use them all the time :)
-
I reckon I am being had - BUT.............. as I stated in my reply email "I can leave relevant feedback" - so not threatening - just truthful
I beleive the items will have a combined weight of 500g - therefore the cost for postge should be no more than $2.75, envelope $1.00, and handling $1.00 - therefore a total charge of $5.00 (being generous)
So yeah - I would suggest postage piracy - but feedback will state as much - be quite interesting actually - I am ready for a good fight.
I must be getting on top of things - you know when I don't roll over - I am good!
LOL
I might send back an email and just confirm the costs AND weights and see what happens then

G'Day friend Wokkie,
If there is a chance you might want to buy from this seller again... Be gentle.
Just because you're right, doesn't mean you won't end up on a BBL..

BBL = Be Back Later - doesn't phase me - I would rather not deal with someone who can be dishonest - I would rather do without.
DOne it before - will do it again

I'm a tad unsettled by the tone of the correspondence. It is always, ALWAYS the buyer's responsibility to establish all costs before bidding. And frankly, as the recipient of several extortionists - all from WA - I'm jack of it.
3 times I've sold ice machines to West Australians, and each time they have asked and received a quote for delivery, they've subsequently bid & won, then tried to get a massive discount on the back of feedback threats. (These are 30kg machines that have to be couriered, the cost to me up to $190)
References to "leaving feedback" in the context of reducing postage costs is neither honest nor fair, especially after the bid has been made and the auction ended. If I had erred in this manner I would quickly correct my mistake and pay up.
-
Would the $9 vs $9.60 postage costs for separate and combined be due to one item on its own being able to be sent as letter post, whereas the three together have to be sent as parcel post?
That could be why there's an apparent discrepancy.

The strange thing is other sellers can manage postage for $1.75 - look as I said I don;t really care 0 they can charge me what they like _ bid - I pay - but I WILL NOT ALLOW myself to be RIPPED OFF BY A POSTAGE PIRATE
Feedback will reflect that - it is NOT blackmail - it is truth - and those that know me - know that I DO NOT take kindly to people ripping others off

Ewok, seller is telling you for total of $9 he can send you 3 books each packed separately and posted separately...so equating to $3 each, that's how I'm reading it???
-
yup - $3.00 per item posted seperately
-
Is that expensive?
-
if you allow $1.00 or so for postage and handling - it's not bad - not good either - BUT my arguement is 3 in 1 should be cheaper. Plain and simple
-
Whenever this topic comes up there is a gap in the logical progression. If we follow the 2 most salient and incontrovertible rules of buying -
1. It's the buyers responsibility to know the total costs and conditions of an item before bidding (caveat emptor is a fundamental principle of all commerce) ; 2. A buyer is obligated to pay at the end of the auction
- then there is no comeback on perceived "fairness" of postage costs after the fact. A buyer can only be "ripped off" if a seller charged more than the quoted price.
Assuming a seller would post "at cost" is a mistake.
Assuming others' views on fair postage coincide with your own view is a mistake.
Trying to negotiate lower postage after the auction, especially with the inference of feedback, is abhorrent.
The right thing to do if you are unhappy after the auction is to apologise for your mistake in not knowing the costs, and appeal to the seller for a Mutual Cancellation.
In no other buying format can a buyer hold a seller's reputation over a barrel over a few dollars. Knowing that is one thing; exploiting it is quite another.

QCC - you obviously didn;t read my post properly
Right now - I couldn't care less - I am holding no-one to ransom
I have allowed for a hndling charge AND packaging charge - you obviously deceided not to see that
I am not replying further on this post - as you clearly think I am wrong (and to tell you truth) I am tired and beyond the BS that Ebay generates with peoples perceptions of right and wrong
What is wrong with the expectation of fair P&H charges? - instead of people trying to recoup PP costs even when people don't use PP?
People use P&H to recoup the listing/fees/Paypal costs - instead of incorporating those charges within the starting prices
-
Ewok, I have read, and re-read all your posts. Pretty much what you are saying is that it's OK to break 2 covenants of buying in order to redress a perceived injustice. In other words, 2 wrongs don't make a right, but 3 wrongs do.
I'll put it another way - it's like someone of a Jewish faith expecting his next door neighbour to also eat only kosher. You can't expect others to a. intuitively know your beliefs or b. adhere to those beliefs, and neither can you punish them for failure to comply.
-
As you know (I think), as long as I'm happy with the total price of an item, I don't particularly worry about how much the postage is. I know sellers won't necessarily combine postage, and that's fine, as long as I'm aware of it. (I have always messaged before bidding/buying if I'm not sure.)
Ewok, what's the size and weight of the items? There is a discrepancy between letter post and parcel post costs with AP, so there might be a perfectly legitimate reason for item postage being cheaper when sent separately (3 x letter post) rather than together (1 x parcel post).

Hi qualitycatering...nice to see you around...interesting debate..hope you don't mind if I contribute.
You said: 1. It's the buyers responsibility to know the total costs and conditions of an item before bidding (caveat emptor is a fundamental principle of all commerce) ; 2. A buyer is obligated to pay at the end of the auction
Actually, that's not entirely the case....consumers do have rights when a contract of sale is breached and you'd be pushing it to obligate a buyer to any contract of sale that was misrepresented (very grey area that is). We don't have 'trader protection' laws against dodgy consumers, but we do have 'consumer protection' laws against dodgy traders. The greater risk being for consumers.
You said: A buyer can only be "ripped off" if a seller charged more than the quoted price.
Absolutely, and it happens so often it would make your head spin.......I can give you numerous examples of this very conduct. It's put me right off buying altogether, when a seller then tries to argue and impose ebay's laughable contract of sale, that they themselves have already breached.
It does nothing for buyer confidence or satisfaction, and gives decent and FAIR sellers a bad name....... But...when it happens, the only redress Ebay afford buyers is to leave neg feedback, against these dodgy sellers....which then gives rise to extortion of the reputable sellers.
This being a two way street, and Ebay claiming to be a 'Venue' only, they should STOP interfering with the balance of power in the buyer seller relationship and concentrate on making ebay a safer marketplace. Get rid of the shonks........Sellers are anonymous....bidders are anonymous....customer service and dispute resolution is absent entirely, as is accountability. Even Paypal as their only solution to consumer fraud, is completely up to their discretion in terms of refunds.... and from what I've read, it gives rise to a new phenomenon called chargeback rorting ???
Frankly, as a person who uses bank deposit, and with sellers thinking that buyers should bear all of the responsibility, ...for me, its just not worth shopping on ebay anymore. Bit like consumer Russian Roulette. Particularly when Ebay allow anonymous sellers access to a nation wide pool of potential victims.
If Ebay installed a modest $250.00 buyer protection program such as they are doing in the states (for other payment methods), then this would give bank deposit customers the confidence to shop, knowing that they have at least some dispute resolution process and redress available to them. If the buyer has to take such a risk all the time, they will stop shopping on Ebay as I have had to do under the circumstances.
Even if bank deposit/money order customers had the option to elect an insurance fee based on a sliding scale (i.e. depending on value of goods) on each purchase to protect them from being defrauded..that would at least help, in the absence of any verification of sellers or fraud mitigation strategies from ebay.

Just wondering how you went with this ewok, did you end up hearing from the seller and if so what happend?
-
Item not received yet - will wait until I receive it to comment fully
-
Ah, fair enough :)
-
Not here yet - the seller - sent me a combined invoice for 2 items that I was bidding on... but........... wait for it - she only had one available.............. YES.............. they were the same title
Anyway - the invoice arrived (combined) I paid - the combined invoice and next day I get a refund
I try to pay for one item but the system now won't let me - I sent a query asking for a new invoice and am still waiting!
Been 72 hours since the auction ended - this could be intersting!
-
Hi ewok...just read this thread for the first time, and the thought that popped into my head is:
You can post up to 250g, under 2cm thick , as a letter, however, if you were to combine 3 of these almost 250g items into one parcel, the cost leaps as it is over the magic 500gm = $5.40, and the easiest way to post is in a prepaid satchel.( at around $9.60)
So, I would not consider that postage piracy at all.
Not knowing exactly what items you are talking about makes the decision on this harder. Any further info??
-
bellagina - not disagreeing in the slightest - but things have got decidedly smelly since this topic was opened
Now have to wait for a response - before I can continue :(
-
